Italy and U.S. can build amazing things: Jeep Grand Cherokee based Maserati SUV will get Ferrari engine

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited

In Nov. 2010, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne confirmed that the Fiat SpA owned Maserati brand will be getting an SUV model next year, which will be built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Following that, Marchionne confirmed that production of the Maserati SUV will take place in 2013 at the Chrysler’s Jefferson North assembly plant in Detroit.

Speaking to journalists at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, Marchionne said that the new Maserati SUV will carry an engine designed by Ferrari, another Fiat unit.

“It will be a rock and roll engine,” he said. He said that the Maserati SUV may come in both a V8 and a V12 version.
