Report: Volkswagen could expand SUV lineup to gain on GM, Toyota

2011 Volkswagen Touareg

Currently, the only two SUVs on sale by Volkswagen are the Touareg and the Tiguan. According to Automotive News, Volkswagen may end up expanding its portfolio of SUVs in efforts to triple U.S. sales in the next seven years.

“We will be looking to really grow, particularly in the compact SUV segment,” VW’s U.S. chief Jonathan Browning said. “Over time, I think there’s also scope for growth in terms of a larger SUV within the portfolio.”

Volkswagen sold 20,946 units of the Tiguan in 2010 and 4,713 units of the Touareg.

Volkswagen has plans to triple U.S. sales to 1 million units by 2018 along with Audi making up 20 percent of that total.
