American Honda has notified some 2.2 million customers that a list including e-mail addresses, VINS and login information has been stolen by unknown hackers. However, the whole situation isn’t as bad as it could have been. Officials said that the list did not include Social Security numbers, birth dates, bank information or any other sensitive data that would leave them vulnerable to identity theft.
The Columbus Ohio, Dispatch reports that the stolen list belonged to an outside vendor who was using it to send out ‘welcome’ e-mail messages to customers with OwnerLink or MyAcura accounts. 2.7 million Acura owners were on a separate list that was also stolen, however, that list only had e-mail addresses on it.
American Honda has contacted customers to apologize and remind them about any possible bogus e-mail that could come requesting private information.
