NHTSA: Drugs involved 1 of 5 fatal car crashes in the U.S.

Almost 1/5th of drivers involved in fatal crashes tested positive for drugs, according to the U.S. highway-safety regulator. Sixty-three percent of drivers killed in accidents in 2009 were tested, and 18% tested positive. Only 13% tested positive in 2005.

“Today’s report provides a warning signal that too many Americans are driving after having taken drugs, not realizing the potential for putting themselves and others on the highway at risk,” NHTSA Administrator David Strickland said in the statement.

The study which included some illicit and prescription substances, was the agency’s first such inquiry.
