Mercedes-Benz GLK to get Bluetec diesel variant in 2012

According to Mercedes-Benz USA President Ernst Lieb, the GLK compact SUV will see a diesel variant in 2012.

“We’ve got the GLK coming,” Lieb told Ward’s Auto on the sidelines of the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show. He also confirmed that the next-generation C-Class sedan will share the 2.2L 4-cylinder clean-diesel Bluetec engine when it hits showrooms in 2013. The C-Class will get the engine “right from the start.”

Lieb said that the Bluetec take rate ranges from 12 percent to 20 percent, depending on the model.

Bluetec diesel availability returns to the E-Class sedan for 2011 after a 1-yer hiatus. Mercedes-Benz also offers Bluetec diesel engines in its M-Class and R-Class CUVs.

“Overall, our goal is to be somewhere in the range of 15% to 20%,” Lieb says. “And we’re slowly growing this.”
