Report: First variant of VW Up to go on sale in 2011, prices to start around $14k

It seems like forever since Volkswagen announced plans to produce its much talked about Up! Concept. According to recent reports, the German automaker will display a production version of the Up! minicar at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in September (yeah, we know, it’s a little while out).
Volkswagen sources told Automobilwoche that the first version of the Up! subcompact will be a four-seater, three-door model with a choice of 3-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines. Deliveries are expected to start in late 2011 with prices to start around 10,000 euros (about $14,000 USD).
“The final prototype phase is currently taking place for the Up,” brand development chief Ulrich Hackenberg told Automobilwoche. “So we will be able to start building near-production cars soon.”
Volkswagen’s family of Up! model is expected to include a 5-door version as well as an electric-version due in 2013.
Production of the Up! will take place at Volkswagen’s factory in Bratislava, Slovakia.
