At the 2010 LA Auto Show next month, Toyota and Tesla Motors will jointly unveil the RAV4 EV, a fully electric version of the compact SUV. According to Tesla Motors, which will be developing the electric drivetrain for the RAV4 EV, the two companies are working on the production location for the model.
“We”re discussing that with Toyota,” said Gilbert Passin, Tesla”s vice president of manufacturing. “Stay tuned.”
Toyota has yet to confirm how many RAV4 EVs it will make a year or how many it expects to sell when it goes on sale in 2012 in the United States.
The Japanese automaker currently owns a $50 million stake in Tesla Motors and has agreed to pay $60 million to jointly develop the RAV4 EV with the California-based electric car company.
