Volkswagen is no stranger to setting world records in their TDI diesel equipped vehicles. A Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion has set a new Guinness World Record for the longest distance travelled by a standard production passenger car on a single tank of fuel. A team travelled in the Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion over 1,526.63 miles, for an average of 74.8 miles per gallon.
The route mainly followed French autoroutes, but also included some town driving, resulting in an average speed of just over 45 mph. Two AA patrolmen followed the entire attempt in their van to witness the journey independently for the Guinness World Records organisation, which accredited the record.
Power for the Volkswagen BlueMotion comes from a 104-hp 1.6L 4-cylinder TDI engine. The production model is rated at 53.4 mpg (64.2 mpg on the European combined driving cycle).
