Volkswagen to drop Passat after 2010 model year, New Midsize Sedan to debut in Detroit

Sketch of Volkswagen's new mid-size sedan

German automaker Volkswagen has confirmed that the Passat sedan will be dropped from the U.S. market after the 2010 model year. The model will be replaced by the unnamed New Midsize Sedan in January. The model will make its debut at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show and will go on sale in the spring as a 2012 model.

The New Midsize Sedan will be the first vehicle to go into production at the company’s new Cattanooga plant.

What will the new sedan compete with? Well, it is expected to be a bit larger than the Passat – meaning it will most likely go head-to-head with the likes of the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and the Hyundai Sonata.
