Subaru’s version of Toyota FT-86 to make 260-hp

Toyota FT-86 Concept

So you’re pretty excited about the Toyota FT-86 hitting the roads in late 2011? It’s Toyota’s first ‘sports car’ in a really long time, it’s a coupe, it’s rear-wheel-drive and it will be powered by a 2.0L 200-hp engine mated  to a 6-speed manual. Sounds fun right? Well, if you want just a little bit more fun, you can wait for the Subaru version of the FT-86, which will be powered by a 2.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder unit.

The model was recently spotted at the Nurburgring and spy photographers said that a front-mounted intercooler was visible through an opening in the front grille. Those unnamed sources we always hear of told UK publication AutoCar that the Subaru model will get a 260-hp version of the Impreza WRX STI”s turbocharged 2.5L flat four.

Overall Subaru’s version of the Toyota FT-86 will be a little more aggressive but will share similar body panels. However, each will get its own front grille, bumpers and wheels.

Refresher: Inspired by the sporty 1980s Corolla AE86, the production version of the FT-86 is reported to be powered by a 200-hp 2.0L boxer Subaru engine sending power to the rear-wheels. Prices are set to start above $20,000.
