Toyota wants to sell 5 million hybrids by 2015

Some Japanese newspaper the other day reported that Toyota, the hybrid king, plans to cut down hybrid production next year. Well, we doubt that’s the case because Toyota said today it wants to hit cumulative sales of 5 million hybrid vehicles by 2015.

Since 1997, the launch of its first hybrid model, Toyota has sold a total of 2.68 million hybrid vehicles globally. Sales of Toyota’s hybrid models in Japan were enjoying strong sales last year thanks to government subsidies that favor hybrids over other fuel-efficient cars.

Toyota eventually wants to start selling 1 million hybrid annually and plans on offering a hybrid option across the whole lineup as early as 2020.
