BMW development chief: Gran Coupe coming in 2012, new 6-Series coupe due 2011

BMW Concept Gran Coupe

Shortly after the BMW Concept Gran Coupe made its debut at the 2010 Beijing Motor Show (in fact it was the same day that the car was unveiled), reports of a production model took over the automotive web space. However at that time we hadn’t heard anything ‘official’ from BMW or a BMW executive – at the time, any word a production model was coming for ‘inside sources.’

Well, if you needed additional reassuring that the Gran Coupe four-door-coupe will be produced, BMW’s development chief Klaus Draeger says it will – and it will come to the market to take on the Porsche Panamera, Audi A7 Sportback and theĀ Mercedes-Benz CLS.

Draeger said the production version will be positioned close to the BMW 6-Series but won’t steal the ‘6-Series’ badging. The production BMW Gran Coupe is scheduled to debut in 2012, following the debut of the new two-door 6-Series Coupe next year.

Draeger said BMW is not sure whether a hybrid variant of the Gran Coupe will be produced. “We are in position to bring out an additional hybrid version since we are using the same powertrain architecture as the 5, 6 or 7 series,” he said.
