Earlier this morning, FoMoCo throw out some dirt, rocks and created a hill to launch the new 2011 Ford Explorer in NYC in Herald Square in front Macy’s. Discovery Channel’s Dirty Job’s Michael Rowe joined FoMoCo CEO Alan Mulally to unveil the new Explorer, which received a pretty strong reception – even though many are confused with it being a crossover and not a true SUV.
The seven-passenger 2011 Ford Explorer will hit dealerships later this winter with prices starting at $28,190 for the base model – $1,000 less than the outgoing model.
The new Explorer will also be available in XLT and Limited trim levels with power coming from a 3.5L Ti-VCT V6 engine making 290-hp and 255 lb-ft of torque. The Dearborn automaker will also offer an optional 2.0L inline 4-cylinder turbocharged and intercooled EcoBoost engine making 237-hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. Buyers can choose between a front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive Explorer (AWD only available with V6 engine).
