Chrysler recalls 25,000 Dodge, Jeep vehicles due to sticking gas pedal issue

Chrysler today announced that it is recalling 25,000 Dodge and Jeep vehicles to fix a sticking gas pedal issue. The pedals in the Chrysler vehicles are made by the same supplier involved in a much larger recall of Toyota vehicles for the same issue.

Chrysler notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it is recalling 25,263 Dodge Calibers from the 2007 model year and 71 Jeep Compass SUVs. Chrysler said that the models are equipped with the brake-override software and it did not consider the problem a safety defect. However, the Auburn Hills automaker will conduct a voluntary recall.

The company said that the problem stems from a manufacturing defect by supplier CTS that made the bearing housing to be too large. CTS corrected the problem in 2006.

Chrysler estimates that 30 percent of the vehicles involved in the recall would actually have the problem.
