We already know that Volkswagen is working on a hybrid variant of its compact Golf model. However, R&D head Ulrich Hackenberg has confirmed with AutoCar that the German automaker is also working on a full electric version of the next-generation Golf.
“We”re looking at a hybrid version of a compact car for Europe and it will come on the next Golf, and an EV version,” Hackenberg said.
He also confirmed that diesel hybrid technology, previewed in the Up! Lite concept, could make it into larger Volkswagen cars. The Up! Lite concept is powered by a 0.8 TDI two-cylinder turbo-diesel engine with an electric motor making a total of 64-hp total.
