Tomorrow at the 2009 LA Auto Show, the large hybrid luxury segment will get a little hotter as BMW shows its ActiveHybrid 7 and Mercedes-Benz shows its S400 Hybrid. Yesterday, Audi unveiled its long overdue redesign of the A8 flagship sedan, which will go on sale next year. According to Automotive News, a hybrid variant of the A8 is in the works.
Initially, the Audi A8 will be available with a 4.2L FSI direct-injection V8 that produces 372-hp and a maximum torque of 328 lb-ft.
Audi CEO Rupert Stadler told Automotive News that lithium-ion battery technology is being developed by Sanyo Electric Co. Sanyo and parent company Volkswagen signed a deal in May 2008.
Audi says that fuel-economy of the 2011 A8 is improved by 15% when compared to the current A8.
