Mazda announced that it has kicked off production of the Mazda2 at its new passenger car plant at AutoAlliance Thailand Co., Ltd. The plant is part of a joint venture manufacturing facility with FoMoCo and will produce Mazda2 units that will be sold mainly in the ASEAN markets.

“The Thai-produced Mazda2 will be one of Mazda’s core products in the ASEAN region, with ASEAN sales targeted at approximately 20,000 units per year,” Mazda said in a statement.

It was confirmed last month that the Mazda2 will hit United States roads in fall of 2010. The U.S. based Mazda2 will be unveiled at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show in December with a minor facelift.

Will it look like the facelifted model seen here? We’ll find out in about 2 months.
