Jaguar planning Audi A5, BMW 3-Series rival
Speaking to AutoCar at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, Jaguar’s engineering boss Mick Mohan said that the company is planning a rival to the Audi A5 and the BMW 3-Series. He said that the much talked about XE sportscar is one of the several options being considered to replace the X-Type.
“The X-Type won’t be around forever, and because we don’t plan to replace it, there are lots of possibilities for cheaper models,” Mohan said. “Personally, I’d love to make a compact coupe – an Audi a5 or BMW 3-series coupe rival. I think we’d make a really good one too.”
He said that Jaguar will let the market soak up the XJ for the time being and will wait for the economy to recover before releasing another model. He said that Jaguar could plan something in about 12 months.
Mohan said that a crossover or an SUV are out of the question for Jaguar. “Utility will never be what we’re about.”
