Chrysler Group LLC is once again looking for a manufacturing partner in China as it prepares to rework its product lineup under the control of Fiat SpA. According to sources familiar with the matter, Fiat and Chrysler have contacted many Chinese automakers about a partnership that would involve manufacturing a vehicle for the Chinese market.
Sources said that vehicle would be based on a Chrysler platform. Two other sources said that the preliminary discussions in China said Chrysler is specifically interested in finding a partner for the platform used to build the Jeep Compass. Known as the C-platform, it also underpins the Dodge Caliber and Jeep Patriot.
Chrysler spokesman Gualberto Ranieri said China would be a critical market for the company but no deal with a Chinese partner had been signed.
“China is an extremely important market for Chrysler to get into and there is great interest in that market,” he said.
