GM’s North America President Tony Clarke said in an e-mail to employees that 1,600 white-collar workers will lose their jobs within the next few days as the struggling automakers looks for ways to cut costs and restructure its business.
“In these unprecedented times, GM is reinventing every aspect of our business, including our organizational size and structure, to create a lean and agile company,” Clarke wrote in the e-mail.
GM began cutting U.S. salaries jobs last month laying-off a total of 3,400 workers. The move is a part of the 47,000 job cuts the automaker plans on completing by the end of 2009.
