BMW Z2 gets the approval, concept coming to Frankfurt in Sept.
We’ve been hearing for some time now that BMW is working on a smaller roadster than the Z4 dubbed the BMW Z2. According to AutoBild, BMW’s board and executives have given the Z2 project the green light of approval and a concept is apparently headed to the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
Developed under BMW’s Project i team, the BMW Z2 will be built on the 1 Series platform and will feature many EfficientDynamics’ fuel-saving technologies. The rear-wheel-drive Z2 will be offered with different powertrain options including a 204-hp 1.6L 4-cylinder gasoline direct-injection, a hybrid with a range extender gasoline engine, and an all-electric model with lithium-ion batteries.
AutoBild says that BMW will also offer a coupe model of the Z2 roadster when the car goes on sale in 2012. Like the 1-Series, the BMW Z2 will be a soft-top convertible since it’s tough to accommodate a hard-top folding roof in a car of such size.
