Speaking yesterday at an electric vehicle development facility in California, President Barack Obama renewed his campaign pledge for 1 million plug-in electric hybrid vehicles on our roads by 2015. Obama also promoted a $2 billion battery research program that is include in his economic stimulus plan.
Obama said that he hopes that the $2 billion grant “will spark the manufacturing of the batteries and parts that run these cars, build or upgrade the factories that will produce them, and in the process, create thousands of jobs right here in America.”
While Japanese automakers like Toyota have called the plan “unrealistic,” Michigan lawmakers pushed hard for the research money saying that it will help the American auto industry speed up the development of next-generation plug-in hybrids.
