Alfa Romeo MiTo named 2009 European Car of the Year

Alfa Romeo’s subcompact MiTo took the title for the 2009 European Car of the Year. The two-door hatch scored 462 points by automotive journalists from Europe beating the Lancia Delta that finished second followed by the Ford Fiesta in third.

It has been rumored that Alfa is considering the MiTo for the North American market; however Fiat has delayed Alfa’s U.S. return until 2011 due to a depressed market. Ford’s Fiesta is scheduled to arrive in the U.S. in 2010.

The Alfa Romeo MiTo is currently available in all major European markets. The entry level model is powered by a 79-hp 1.4L 4-cylinder engine with the range-topper carrying a 153-hp 1.4L turbo engine that gives it the ability to go from 0 to 62 mph in 7.9 seconds.
