Drive-thru X-ray machines help seize 3,000 lbs of drugs at San Ysidro border

The San Ysidro border between U.S. and Mexico has a new gadget on hand. The border has installed new massive x-ray machines called ‘Z-portals’ that scan an entire car.

The x-ray machines sit at the secondary inspection where agents send vehicles for extra-screening. The low-radiation Z-portals are capable of scanning an entire car showing people and other hidden objects. According to the manufacturer of the machines, it will take more than 2,000 trips for one to be exposed to the same amount of radiation as a single dose from a hospital x-ray machine.

Since being introduced last week, the new machines have already helped U.S. border guards seize more than 3,000 pounds of drugs.
