GM says Volt’s production to create 550 jobs in Detroit

The Chevrolet Volt will be providing some electricity to the job market in Detroit when production kicks off at GM’s Hamtramck Assembly plant in 2010. GM officials told the Detroit City Council committee today that the production of the Volt would create about 550 jobs in the city.

“We will be evolving this technology here involving the residents of the city of Detroit… and moving GM”s technology forward, at the same time moving the city of Detroit forward,” said Blake Watkins, tax abatement manager for Detroit”s Planning and Development division.

He said that GM will invest close to $336 million into the plant to build the car which currently employs 1,944 employees.

GM also said that it is seeking $136 million in tax abatement over a course of 25 years to build its plug-in hybrid at its Hamtramck plant.
