Man get’s 110mpg from 1987 Mustang, claims 0-60 in 3 secs

While he isn’t in it for the money (right and we just bring you auto news everyday because we have nothing better to do – oh wait that’s true), Doug Pelmear’s work on his 1987 Ford Mustang could earn him $10 million from the Progressive Automotive X Prize program.

A Napoleon, Ohio resident, Pelmear has tweaked the engine of his 1987 Mustang to squeeze out 110mpg, making the engine as 5 times as fuel-efficient as the traditional engine. He said traditional gas engines operate at 8 to 10 percent efficiency while the engine on his Mustang is working at 38 percent efficiency.

Pelmear, an electrical engineer, told claims that his car produces 400-hp and goes from 0-60 in 3 seconds with a top speed of over 100mph.

He has entered to win the $10 million Progressive Automotive X Prize; a contest to find the most affordable marketable car that gets 100mpg.
