Chevrolet to get 4-cylinder turbocharged compact car in 2009

Pontiac maybe getting the Chevrolet Aveo based G3 but Chevrolet will get another compact car that will go into production early next year. According to sources familiar with GM’s product plan, GM will unveil a compact Chevrolet car during the auto show season this fall.

Power for the car will come from a new 1.4 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder global unit producing between 120 and 140-hp. The car will have a combined fuel-economy of 40mpg. According to the source the car won’t be called the Cobalt which may be killed after June 2010.

“It”s a pretty incredible engine; it”s direct-injected with great power,” the source said. “The small-displacement turbos make it possible to get great power so that GM might put it in the mid-sized products, too.

GM confirmed at the 2007 LA Auto Show that the Chevrolet Beat will go into production for markets outside the U.S. The source said that GM is now considering bringing the Beat to the U.S. as well. No word whether the car being spoken of here is the Beat.
