VW bringing back the Golf cabriolet, EOS to become Passat cabrio

According to our friends over at CAR, Volkswagen is planning on bringing back the Golf convertible when it introduced the six-generation model. Volkswagen has realized that it was slacking on the previous Golf convertible with the first version remaining the same for 14 years without any major changes and the second-generation being discontinued in 2002.

Boss Martin Winterkorn has already confirmed that the Golf cabrio is on the company’s agenda, however a little planning and foundation has to be done before preparing the model for market launch. It will kind of go in line with current A3 convertible, which is also derived from hatchback version.

Engine lineup will be the same as the hatchback variant, although its not very likely that Volkswagen would offer a GTI convertible. All engines will be mated to DSG dual-clutch transmission with either six or seven speed.

So what’s going to happen to Volkswagen EOS? The EOS will become the Passat Cabriolet with Passat design language. The slighlty longer EOS convertible will debut in 2013.
