Nissan studying four-door sedan based on GT-R

Remember last week we told you that Nissan is considering an Infiniti badged GT-R? Well, a senior Nissan source has confirmed to MotorTrend that the company is studying the possibility of a high-performance four-door sedan based on the Nissan GT-R. The anonymous source said that the car may be sold under the Infiniti badge.

The four-door sedan will share a lot of GT-R’s mechanicals including the 3.8 liter VR38 V6 engine that produces 480 horsepower and the rear-mounted six-speed DSG-style transmission.

While building a four-door GT-R is feasible, the GT-R’s platform would have to be stretched to allow for an extra set of doors and rear-passenger space. Even though Nissan could save money by sharing components with the GT-R, Nissan will have to make some expensive revisions to the carbon fiber body structure which could make the sedan cost $3,000 to $5,000 more.

Nissan believes it could sell the four-door based GT-R sedan in Japan with a Nissan badge as a Corvette competitor. However, Americans and Europeans may shy away from the idea of paying $85,000 for a car with a Nissan bade on it. Putting an Infiniti badge could solve the both problems.
