VW CEO: “We want to be in 2010 where Toyota is now”

Speaking to Automotive News at a press event, Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn said that he believes that with more attention to detail coupled with better design will help Volkswagen take over Toyota as the number 1 auto maker within 10 years.

As part of a 10-year plan called Strategy 2018, Winterkorn wants to overtake Toyota in terms of unit sales, productivity and profitability. VW is on its way to sell a target 6 million cars this year, up from 5.7 million last year. Toyota, on the other hand, sold 8.8 million cars last year, and is on its way to reaching its 10 million in sales goal.

Winterkorn would not say exactly when Volkswagen will be able to take over Toyota but analysts believe it could happen sometime in 2014. “I cannot discuss internal goals. But we want to be in 2010 where Toyota is now,” said Winterkorn.

As reported last week, in an effort to take over Toyota, Volkswagen is working on four new architectures that will be used across the Volkswagen Group brands.
