GM planning small 7-seater Chevrolet minivan for 2009
GM is planning on a small 7-seater minivan for the Chevrolet brand in 2009. According to UAW’s summary of labor contract with GM, a seven-seater vehicle is in the works for the company’s Hamtrack, Michigan plant.
Code-named MPV-7, the car will be based on the next-generation Opel Zafira. According to sources familiar with the planning of the car, the 7-seater minivan will also be sold in the U.S. The U.S. version will be boxier and aggressive than the Zafira, and will have a unique interior.
Pricing for the car is expected to be in the high $20k to low $30k. Sources say that even Saturn may get its own version since Saturn has been sharing much of Opel’s European lineup in the U.S.
GM hopes that a U.S. version of the Zafira will help replace the gap left by the Venture minivan. GM believes it can generate at least 100,000 units in sales with the new Chevrolet 7-seater.
