Volvo’s Future: New XC90 coming in 2010, small XC60 to rival X3

Of all the luxury brands for sale currently by Ford, Volvo is probably one of the most integrated luxury brands with FoMoCo. In fact, both of Volvo’s key platforms are used by other Ford brands.

Executives now fear that separation from Ford can have a negative effect on Volvo’s future lineup.

C30: The Volvo C30 hit dealerships in October of 2006, but sales have been very sluggish. Offered with only one engine the Volvo C30 comes in a 2.5 liter turbo 5-cylinder engine that produces 216 horsepower. Hoping to boost sales Volvo is now planning on a 2.0 liter diesel for the U.S. Volvo is unveiling C30 ‘Efficiency,’ which is powered by a 1.6 liter turbodiesel, at Frankfurt this month.

S40: Volvo just unveiled the 2008 Volvo S40 in April of 2006, but some Volvo executives confirm that the S40 will be dropped in the near future.

S60: Sales of the Volvo S60 have been slow since it launched in 1999. The main problem is that the S80 is barely than the S60, which is barely larger than the S40. The redesigned S60, which will get a redesign in 2010, will be smaller than the current model.

S80: The redesigned S80 just arrived in 2006; no major changes are expected in the next 5 years.

C70: Volvo has no changes planned for the hardtop convertible.

V50: Volvo is deciding whether to share the Mazda3 platform again or to use a smaller version of Ford’s next-generation EUCD platform. A redesign is expected in 2011.

V70: The redesigned Volvo V70 arrives in the U.S. in October.

V90: There were plans to produce a wagon based on the Versatility Concept Car, but unfavorable the poor sales of the R-Class have killed any chance of that happening.

XC60: Volvo is working on a rival to the BMW X3 and the Acura RD-X. The sporty crossover will arrive in the U.S. in 2009 and will be built on Ford’s EUCD platform that the Land Rover LR2 uses. Upon launch, the XC60 will be offered with both 3.2 liter and a 3.2 liter turbo.

XC70: A redesigned XC70 will hit U.S. showroom in October.

XC90: The XC90 will be redesigned and re-engineered for 2010. Its wheelbase will get longer and it will sport a larger Volvo “iron” symbol in the front grille and large letters spelling “Volvo” across the tailgate.
