If you live in the UK and plan on running out to buy the new MINI Clubman, don’t run to the door just yet. MINI has openly admitted that the suicide door layout of the longer MINI may turn off interested buyers.
The new MINI Clubman’s second rear-hinged door on the right side of the car may be inconvenient to many British buyers, most of them who will have to enter or exit the car on the road instead of on the pavement.
“We accept the design of the Clubman might turn off some people, but we also believe that there are others who will like its unusual design,” said a Mini spokesman.
So why not just move the door on the left? Well rear-hinged door on the left side of the car is out of the questions according to MINI engineers since the fuel filler neck is in the way.
We highly doubt that will turn away buyers from the MINI Clubman, which is expected to be as popular as the MINI Convertible.
When the car hits markets in 2008, it will be equipped with one 1.6 liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine and one regular 1.6 liter 4-cylinder engine. The turbocharged engine will give the MINI Clubman S the ability to produce 175 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. The regular 1.6 will have the ability to produce 120 hp and 118 lb-ft of torque.
