Forget Herbie: 2010 VW Beetle getting a modern redesign

The reinvented Beetle, which hit US markets in 1998, is in need of a major redesign. According to sources at MotorTrend, the redesign Volkswagen Beetle is on schedule to debut in 2010.

The 2010 Volkswagen Beetle will share the same platform as the Volkswagen Rabbit and the upcoming Volkswagen Scirocco. Once again, the car will be designed in California and will be engineered in Germany. While the current Volkswagen Beetle was a resurrection of an automotive icon, the 2010 Volkswagen Beetle will move away from its “awww that’s so cute look.”

Volkswagen has reportedly ordered its designers to draw up a more modern and aggressive look for the next Beetle, making it bigger than the current model. When the car debuts in 2010, we are expected to see many variants including a hatchback, soft-top convertible, a micro-van, a wagon-based crossover and even a pickup variant is in the works.
