Volkswagen China to sell China-built car in US

Volkswagen AG and Shanghai Volkswagen are working on a new sedan together that will replace the current locally produced Passat Lingyu. The car will be assembled in China, but will be sold in China and the Unites States.

While no details on timing and sales goal have been discussed as of yet, Gu Huan, Shanghai Volkswagen spokesman, says his company will be responsible for the exterior and interior styling of the car. The car will use Volkswagen AG’s next-generation Passat platform, according to Volkswagen China spokesman Kai Grueber.

Both US and China models will be very similar to each other. According to Gu, “Tastes in China and North America in the main features are similar,” he says. “There will be some differences in the smaller details, though.”

“We will first focus on the China market,” Grueber says.

The car will be produced by Shanghai Volkswagen with more than 1,200 engineers and other technical personnel.
