First of all, let’s get the model name cleared up. The upcoming baby SUV from Mercedes-Benz has been called either the MLK or the GLK. Well now it’s official; the compact SUV will be called the ‘GLK’ and will arrive in the European market in the second half of 2008 after its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
The Mercedes-GLK is based on the platform of the 2008 C-Class (much like the X3 is based on the 3-Series) and is expected to be powered by a 2.0 liter base model and will eventually have a 2.2-liter turbodiesel that produces 204 horsepower the following year.
Mercedes has decided to offer rear-wheel-drive variants of the GLK rather than keeping every model all-wheel-drive. Mercedes said that it believes that if Toyota and Lexus can sell their SUVs in the US with rear-wheel-drive, than Mercedes should have no problem offering nearly half without all-wheel-drive.
According to Automobilwoche, when the Mercedes-Benz GLK in 2008, pricing will start at approximately 35,000 Euros. Pricing will be influenced by its rivals the BMW X3 and the upcoming Audi Q5.
