After facing sluggish sales and production totalling only 280 units last year, Maybach is headed back to the drawing board and although investment at this time might seem like a stupid idea, Maybach confirms that there are new models in the works. One senior Maybach official told CAR Online “˜…that the four-door Ocean Drive convertible started life as a Maybach, but then we got cold feet and turned it into a Merc.”
He said that Maybach’s design is also one of the biggest problems. While the design was attractive when it came out, its way overdue for a major overhaul. Now DaimlerChrysler is looking to expand the premium luxury brand between 2008 and 2001 with a power-operated fabric convertible top and a Maybach version Mercedes-Benz GL SUV. The Maybach SUV will be limited to no more than 1500 unites a year and will be sold in the US, Asia and the Middle East.
The company may even consider a four-door coupe based on the Mercedes-Benz CLS.
