Volkswagen will be debuting the second ever Golf GTI Cabriolet at next month’s Geneva Motor Show for the UK, following up last year’s soft-top GTI debut in Austria.

This will most likely be the last MkVI Golf variant, since the next generation is coming up in 2013. A full-spec GTI Cabriolet has skipped the last 5 generations, however the GTI motor has been available for both a Golf Cabriolet and Eos hard-top since the MkI.

The soft-top GTI that was released at Worthersee last year comes with a set of 19-inch Glendale alloy wheel option, along with a body kit, and LED lighting. The speculation is that this tuner car was a preview of what’s to come for the production model, and that this is similar to what will be released next month.

Additionally, there is the possibility of the Worthersee Golf R Cabrio being sent to production, which would boast the most power ever sent to the wheels of a VW convertible, at 268hp.

The new GTI Cabriolet is scheduled for release in September, priced around $35,300 USD, with an R version at around $45,800 USD.

Volkswagen has a well-overhauled seventh generation Golf GTI hitting the pavement sometime this year as a faster, lighter, more technologically advanced version of its former self.

A special welding process allows the automaker to build shells with aluminum roofs and bolt-ons, cutting weight by over 220 pounds from the current model. The lighter weight will also get better distribution with a 40mm upward shift of the front wheels, which will also improve handling. Suspension parts have also been upgraded along with a new steering rack. Traction has been improved by swapping out the current brake based traction control for an electronically controlled mechanical limited slip differential.

Power for the model is expected to come in just around 230hp, close to the Mk6, but the addition of the Audi’s Valvelift system gives torque a nice boost up to 260 lb-ft. A new GTD model is also in the works, packing 20 more horsepower over the current model’s 170hp, and 280 lb-ft made by an all new engine picked from Volkswagen’s new diesel line.

Click here for more news on the Volkswagen GTI.

The new GTI also borrows Audi’s technology for the entertainment system, which includes hi-fi, navigation and connectivity features presented on an 8 inch capacitive touchscreen. The system also features a proximity sensor, which brings options on the screen when your finger comes close to it. Forward cameras have also been added that help with maintaining lanes, auto-breaking, and radar cruise.

A new platform is being implemented by the VW Group called the MQB, which is what the Mk7 is based on. The MQB will be featured on all transverse-front-engined models in the lineup. Included are systems, design processes, components, and factories. The upgrade reduces development and tooling costs by 30 percent, parts costs by 20 percent, and manufacturing costs by 30 percent.

Overall, this sounds like a solid update for the GTI, and the GTD.

An attractive tuning kit has just been released by Schmidt Revolution for the Mk5 Volkswagen Golf GTI.

The visual highlight of the kit would be the 19-inch red and black wheels, wrapped in Margangoni tires. Schmidt Revolution also dropped the car, added a dual exhaust system, sport tuned suspension and fitted the rear with the original bumper for the R32. On the inside, a Kenwood navigation system has been added.

The kit doesn’t leave out performance, with a 74hp upgrade kicking total power output up to 271hp. Starting with the 2.0-liter TSFI motor, the ECU gets an upgrade as well as the air intake.

From the perspective of a GTI fan, this is a nice tune, although power upgrades could have been improved upon.

B & B just released not one, but three different tuning kits for the Golf GTI Edition 35 anniversary edition. Different options are available and coincide with different price ranges.

Stage 1 is actually split itself, and offers a package that boosts the GTI to 277-hp at 277-lb per ft, up from 232-hp at 221-lb per ft. Already a decent tune, stage one can take the torque even further, to 310-lb per foot.

B&B’s second stage provides a nice jump in horsepower over stage one, kicking it up to 321-hp at 332-lb per ft of torque. If this still isn’t enough, a third stage is available, as well.

The stage 3 option comes with a price tag to match. Just over $12,700 can buy a GTI that’s dropped 30mm, sits on 19- or 20- inch rims, and an upgraded turbocharged motor. In a rush? This GTI hits 0-62mph in just 4.7 seconds, pushing 375-hp and 376-lb per ft of torque.

The Mark VI Volkswagen Golf and GTI have been with us for about three years now. So naturally, we’d expect Volkswagen AG to be hard at work to make sure the next-generation Golf and the GTI are just as successful as the last two generations. In light of this, we’ve just received news that the next generation GTI will be getting a carryover of the current 2.0L turbocharged engine, but with a twist…sort of.

The next generation GTI will get today’s version of the EA888 turbo four, but will be receiving a power upgrade from 200-hp to 220-hp for the next generation, thanks to some slight tweaks and a new valve lift system developed by Audi. But that’s not all. The next generation GTI and GTI-R will also get a new electronically controlled, mechanically locking differential.

As for the standard Golf, significant changes were made to the EA111 1.4L “twincharger” four-banger. Renamed to EA112, the new motor will drop the supercharger and turbocharger combination for just a “soft” single turbo setup. Output is estimated to peak at 150-hp.

Click here for more news on the Volkswagen GTI.

We’ve also received news regarding the next generation Golf’s new sibling: a Golf Carbiolet, which will also get a hot R version. It will use the same 2.0L turbocharged four-banger good for 261-hp in the Scirocco R while the GTI Cabriolet will just use the plain 207hp motor from the regular GTI.

It seems like Volkswagen has changed their mind. Why? According to a source, “Volkswagen of America doesn’t want it,” … even if we, the consumer want it.

According to an inside that spoke with CARandDRIVER: “VW of America do their own special editions. The GTI is selling very well over there, and they don’t need special editions to move it.”

Volkswagen’s hot hatch models are making some big headlines this week thanks to the 2011 Worthersee event – so it’s only right that a report like this pops up.

Last month when Volkswagen unveiled the special-edition Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 35 celebrating the model’s 35th anniversary, it said that the limited-edition of the hot-hatchback will only be available in Europe.

Well, it seems like V-dub has had a change of mind and has decided to bring the GTI Edition 35 to the United States. However, the 35 badging will have to change since the number of years are specific to the European market. In 2012, the GTI will celebrate its 30th birthday in the United States.

In the Euro version, the Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 35 is powered by a 2.0-liter TSI 4-cylinder turbo engine, that has been upgraded to produced 235 PS – or 232-hp.

Every year at the GTI-meet at Wörthersee, Volkswagen surprises fans with a breathtaking concept. In 2007, it was the GTI W12-650, in 2008 the Golf Estate RaVe 270 and in 2009 the Golf GTI Wörthersee 09.

For 2010, Volkswagen is presenting the new Golf GTI Excessive in Reifnitz. The Golf GTI Excessive Concept adds on parts styled in high-gloss black piano paint.

“The focus here is on extreme precision in the definition of shapes, radii and straight lines, as though cut with a razor blade,” Volkswagen said in a statement. “The add-on parts themselves are slender and light on the one hand, yet noticeably stable as well; they appear as though carved from a single block.”

Other add-ons include a front spoiler. Also, side sills and a rear diffuser (which lights fire-red when braking) are visually styled as so-called splitters. Never before have splitters been transferred to a production model with such high-end precision as on the Golf GTI Excessive. Volkswagen says that it’s up to the fans whether or not the add-ons make it into the catalogue of Volkswagen Original Accessories.

Volkswagen says that the Golf GTI is an icon and we definitely agree since it’s our favorite hot-hatch and has sold over 1.7 million units since its debut in 1976. As announced earlier in the month, Volkswagen is launching two special-edition versions of the GTI at Tour 2010.

The Golf GTI adidas gets wider tracks, upgraded brake discs and pads, a lightweight exhaust system, revised springs and dampers, 19-inch alloy wheels, wheel arch extensions and the same bi-xenon headlights and LED tails as the Golf R. No changes have been made to the 200-hp 2.0L 16-valve DOHC turbocharged 4-cylinder under the hood. Volkswagen will produce a limited 4,410 units of the Golf GTI adidas for sale this June.

The Golf GTI Excessive is a concept (of which no pictures were released) which will be Volkswagen’s surprise concept at the GTI-Meet at Wörthersee. All we know so far is that the car will show the “design potential of the Golf GTI.”

Press Release:

- Golf GTI adidas: Customised Golf GTI launches in June
- Golf GTI Excessive: Concept adds precise motorsport look for series production

Flashback: Golf GTI 1 and Golf Citi Mk1 as tributes to their origins

Wolfsburg / Reifnitz, 13 May 2010 – There are automobiles, and then there are automotive icons ““ classics with a glorious past and an exciting future. The Golf GTI is such an icon. Over 1.7 million have been sold since the car’s debut in 1976. In just the sixth year after the launch of the Golf GTI, its community of fans had grown so large that it sought a common platform, or to put it simply an event, to talk shop, showcase and drive the GTI. That is how the GTI-Meet in Reifnitz at Wörthersee came into being in 1982. Since then, fans have been meeting in the Austrian state of Kärnten for five days of Mardi Gras in May. It is already time to meet again. One of the traditional highlights: unveiling of the new GTI variations. Debuting as world premieres this year are the Golf GTI adidas ““ an exclusive model whose sales will launch in June ““ and the Golf GTI Excessive, a concept car implemented in a stylistically refined motorsport look.

The new Golf GTI adidas and the GTI concept car will be accompanied by two GTI classics: the first generation Golf GTI (1976) and the Golf Citi Mk1 Рa last edition, limited to 1,000 units, of the first generation Golf whose production has just been phased out in South Africa. Volkswagen Classic is bringing these two icons to W̦rthersee. Its motto: GTI history meets GTI present and future.

Golf GTI adidas: Starting in June, three of the world’s most recognised German badges ““ Volkswagen, GTI and adidas ““ will for the first time meld into a combined product as the Golf GTI adidas. The essential fact is that the GTI’s technology and styling – and its interior customised in the style of the adidas brand – all produce a real dynamic mix. And so the Golf GTI adidas is likely to attain collector’s status very quickly, given the histories of today’s classic cars in the mould of the two Golf Pirelli GTIs (1983 and 2007) and the Golf GTI Edition 30 (2006).

Like each of these icons, the new Golf GTI adidas will also launch with wide-ranging customised exterior and interior features. They include newly designed 18-inch “Serron” alloy wheels and a specially developed sport seat design. As on the Golf R, bi-xenon headlights and LED rear lights are aboard as standard equipment.

Golf GTI Excessive: Every year at the GTI-Meet at Wörthersee, Volkswagen surprises fans with breathtaking concept cars. In 2007, it was the GTI W12-650, in 2008 the Golf Estate RaVe 270 and in 2009 the Golf GTI Wörthersee 09. In 2010, Volkswagen is presenting the Golf GTI Excessive in Reifnitz. This concept car illustrates the great design potential of the Golf GTI.

Key components here are the add-on parts styled in high-gloss black piano paint. The focus here is on extreme precision in the definition of shapes, radii and straight lines, as though cut with a razor blade. The add-on parts themselves are slender and light on the one hand, yet noticeably stable as well; they appear as though carved from a single block. Add-ons around the front spoiler, side sills and rear diffuser (which lights fire-red when braking!) are visually styled as so-called splitters; they are aerodynamically optimised air diverting elements that originate from motorsports. Never before have splitters been transferred to a production model with such high-end precision as on the Golf GTI Excessive. Will these add-ons make it into the catalogue of Volkswagen Original Accessories? That is up to the fans!

Press Release:

Dual World Premiere at Wörthersee:
Volkswagen presents concepts of the Golf GTI and new Polo

Golf GTI “Wörthersee 09″: Fire-red play-mobile with high-end interior

Polo “Wörthersee 09″: First look at potential sport versions

20 May 2009 – The Golf GTI and the new Polo are Volkswagen highlights this spring. Both are launching right now, and both are successors to absolute bestsellers. Both are prime examples of affordable automotive dreams. The GTI for sure, because it is the icon among compact sports cars. And the Polo, because it is small but not meager. That is why these cars have what is possibly the biggest active fan club in the world. Once a year they meet at Wörthersee. This time Volkswagen has brought along two sensational concept cars of the new bestsellers: special “Wörthersee 09″ editions of the Golf GTI and Polo.

Golf GTI “Wörthersee 09″: Maxed out for fan expectations

It is fire-red and a real eyecatcher. Inside and out, the Golf GTI “Wörthersee 09″ combines charming and unique visual looks with an even higher level of performance – it embodies precisely those elements that have always excited genuine GTI fans. Consider the exterior paint, for example. It shimmers in the special glowing red color “Firespark Metallic”, which is repeated as a fine trim line on the high-gloss black 19-inch alloy spoke wheels and in the classic GTI stripes of the radiator grille screen. Other very distinctive body details: an entirely new smoked LED taillight design; its unmistakable graphic design from the rear adds to the Golf GTI concept car’s independent character.

Full of style, the interior of the two-door GTI is inviting too. Initial eyecatchers: high-end aluminum tread plates with “GTI Wörthersee 09″ signature. The next special feature: trim in brushed aluminum and glossy black painted frames around the air vents. The floor mats have red borders as well. All of this makes an exceptionally refined impression and calls attention to the sporty talent of the legendary “GTI” even more.

The newly designed sport comfort seats with their integrated head restraints are an absolute interior highlight. They excite with innovative cover materials and a fresh color composition. This includes black nappa for the outer surfaces and flash red nappa for the seat side supports, bordered by light “Berry White” leather piping. The seat center panels are made of Hexagon; one feature of this high-tech material, which is so pleasant to the touch: its exceptional breathing properties.

GTI drivers in particular know that form follows function. The “Wörthersee 09″ Edition not only pleases with its tasteful style, it was also intensified technically in the direction of performance. The lowered sport chassis enables maximum curve speeds. And the acoustics is not short-changed either: the new sport exhaust system provides for an extra measure of dynamic sound. This will be music to the ears of genuine GTI fans.

When it comes to the turbo engine, the GTI “Wörthersee 09″ relies on the new 2.0-liter TSI with 155 kW / 210 PS. This gives the concept car a top speed of 238 km/h and 6.9 second acceleration to 100 km/h.

Polo “Wörthersee 09″: Sporty vision in red and black

In Austria, Volkswagen is already presenting a study that is based on the new Polo – the “Wörthersee 09″ concept car. Visually, this study offers an initial impression of how a sport version of the new compact might look. It should be noted that it was always part of the successful model series as the Polo GT, Polo G40 or Polo GTI. From a purely technical perspective, the display piece is based on the 1.4-liter MPI version engine with 63 kW / 86 PS. Its unique aspects are to be found in the details:

Just like the Golf GTI Edition, this Polo stands out with its extroverted “Flash Red” body color. In addition, two black rally stripes command attention; they extend over the front end, the roof and back to the rear. The sporty, generously sized alloy wheels are the last detail. The black 18-inchers in “Budapest” styling are making their appearance with polished spokes; they generously fill out the wheel housings of the lowered chassis of the new bestseller – more than 13,000 orders have been received, even before its market launch. The black versus red contrast can be seen as a defining, excitement generating theme. The radiator grille screen, mirror caps, backdrop of the headlights and insert in the lower bumper known as the “buckle” all offer a dark contrast. And the sport exhaust system pleases with its optimized sound.

Premium black also characterizes the interior. It takes a path from the roofliner over the air vents – each with a high-gloss finish – the steering wheel accents and radio panel down to the very distinctive front seats. They are made of very high-end materials. Black nappa leather trims the outer surfaces and the center seat panels where they are offset by horizontal black stripes in the microfiber “San Remo”. The seat’s lateral supports have an arc-shaped striped design which – viewed from outside to inside – is composed of nappa leather, flash-red nappa leather piping, the white leather “Berry White” and black leather. The aluminum tread plates are also a custom feature. Similar to the Golf GTI concept car, they bear the signature “Polo Wörthersee 09″. Red seams also enhance the leatherwork on the parking brake handle, gearshift grip, steering wheel and door trim.

Perfection in the details: new GTI products from Volkswagen Accessories

Volkswagen Accessories will also be astonishing visitors with attractive new products on the occasion of the GTI Meet at Wörthersee. Two innovations stand out: the “Bobsy G2-3 pro GTI-Design” child seat – covered with the original material of the GTI seats (“Jacky” pattern) – gives fans of the sports car icon the option of taking their progeny along with them in the GTI, not only safely but in genuine style. Thanks to its adjustable-width seat cushion and sleeping support, it is ideal for children between three and twelve years old (15 to 36 kilogram body weight). The seatbelt is routed snugly to the body and offers optimal protection. The special head section, lateral support panels that extend far forward and full coverage of the shoulder area guarantee a high level of comfort and safety in case of a side crash.

Also new is the GTI cell phone. The SonyEricsson T700 GTI Edition cell phone is a perfect match for the legendary model from Wolfsburg when it comes to sportiness and exclusivity. Along with the display logo and brushed aluminum surface, all menuing is styled after GTI design. There is even a special GTI sound ringtone. And the integrated 3.2 megapixel camera with 3X digital zoom is ideal for capturing the most beautiful images of the GTI-Meet at Wörthersee for eternity on its 25-MB memory card.
