Automobile history has a long running tradition of taking some of the smallest production cars in the world and seeing how many human beings they can fit inside with the car completely intact and closed.

Whether it was the 86 people crammed into a VW Camper at Carlow’s Institute of Technology in Ireland in 2009, or the 27 PennState students who set the Guinness World Record by stuffing themselves into a New Beetle fairly recently—there will always be a group to see how many people they could fit into an automobile of some sort.

Click here for our original post on the Volkswagen Up.

And that’s exactly what VW’s Communication department did. By taking the new Up! city car, the company wanted to see how many people they could fit into the confines of the sub-compact with all the doors and windows closed and the car completely unmodified.

After many attempts, VW finally crammed 15 beautiful young women (don’t worry, Chris Hanson wasn’t lurking in the corners at the time of this post publishing) and supposedly one lucky chap into the Up!—I bet he was having the time of his life. However, being as this is an unofficial record, don’t expect to see this pop up in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Remember the Volkswagen Concept Pickup that was revealed in September? Yes, it’s the awkward looking concept that hints at a high-volume production European vehicle set to hit markets late next year.

Volkswagen has released a promo for the Concept Pickup showing its capabilities Baywatch style. After watching the promo, we’re left wondering whether the production Volkswagen pickup will be good for heavy-duty jobs like our beloved Ford F150 or the Toyota Tundra.

Production of the Volkswagen pickup will kick off in mid-2009 in Pacheco, Argentine mid-2009 with a total of 100,000 units planned annually. No word yet on when the production Volkswagen pickup will arrive in North American markets.

Volkswagen recently unveiled the Concept Pickup, a concept that will enter production mid-2009 and will go on sale in South America, South Africa, Australia and Europe. What about the U.S.? If a report by Automotive News and a fear by the rest of us and PickupTrucks.com are to be believed, North America will get a next-generation Beetle-based pickup.

It may just happen. If you’ve been following the whole Volkswagen Pickup topic, you’ll notice that Volkswagen is only planning to sell 100,000 units of the pickup annually. That’s pretty conservative and with the U.S. not part of the plan – it’s pretty possible.

Making it very possible for a Beetle-based pickup to show up in your neighbor’s driveway. Why Volkswagen would even consider such a vehicle is beyond us.

Yesterday, Volkswagen showed the world its new Concept Pickup, a concept that will soon spawn a production pickup most likely to be badged ‘Robust.’ The production model will arrive in Europe starting late next year with production to take place in Argentine mid-2009.

Volkswagen says that it is targeting annual sales of 100,000 units for its new pickup. The German automaker is hoping that the new truck helps it increase its commercial vehicle sales to 800,000 units by 2018. We’re just thinking that it’s quite an interesting times to be expecting so much from your truck segment.

The Volkswagen pickup will be offered in a variety of gasoline direct injection and diesel engines along with V-Dub’s all-wheel-drive 4MOTION technology.

As we told you last week Volkswagen was to display a concept version of its upcoming pickup at the 62nd IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover – well here it is. Called the Volkswagen Concept Pickup, V-Dub says, “The concept vehicle ““ executed in as a cleverly designed rescue vehicle for marine use ““ offers a preview of the fourth model series by the commercial vehicle manufacturer.”

Volkswagen spokesperson, Jens Bobsien, said that the concept hints at a high-volume European vehicle set hit the market late next year. The truck, most likely to be called Robust or Taro, will be available with a choice of gasoline direct injection and diesel engines. Expect V-Dub’s all-wheel-drive 4MOTION technology to play a huge part in the production model.

Production will kick off in Pacheco, Argentine mid-2009. The new Volkswagen pickup will be offered in South America, South Africa, Australia and Europe. Bobsien said that other markets “will follow” meaning a North American version could be in the works.
