Not a fan of the design of Toyota models? Things may just get a little better because Toyota in North America is now taking product development authority away from Japanese bosses and keeping it in the hands of North American executives. The move is a part of its response to the quality crisis that hit the company hard in 2010.

Up until now, vehicles that were designed, developed and produced in North America required a sign-off by a chief engineer in Nagoya. Local engineers and sales and marketing executives had to jump through many hoops to get things going their way.

Yoshi Inaba, CEO of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., said Toyota adopted a new system that takes Japan out of the equation. That means that vehicles unique to the U.S. market – Toyota Avalon, Venza, Sienna, Tacoma and Tundra – no longer need Japanese approval in the development process.

“We are going to implement the process from design to preparation for production to development, cost planning, and identifying and selecting suppliers,” said Inaba, said. “All these processes are going to be 100 percent done here, without going back to Japan for approval.”

The IIHS said today that the only large pickups to earn the top rating of good in the organization’s roof strength evaluation for rollover crashes are Ford’s F-150 and Toyota’s Tundra full-size pickups. Competitors Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, and Dodge Ram are rated marginal.

“The F-150 and Tundra also earn the Institute’s 2011 TOP SAFETY PICK award after earning top ratings in previous front, side, and rear evaluations, and for having electronic stability control, which is standard in both pickups,” the IIHS said.

The Ford F-150 withstood a force equal to 4.7 times the vehicles weight while the Toyota Tundra’s roof withstood a force 4.5 times its weight.

To measure roof strength, a metal plate is pushed against one corner of a vehicle’s roof at a constant speed. The maximum force sustained by the roof before 5 inches of crush is compared to the vehicle’s weight to find the strength-to-weight ratio.

Toyota announced today that it is conducting a voluntary safety recall on 51,000 2011 model year Tundra pickups to inspect the rear drive shaft.

“The rear drive shaft in an estimated 0.05 percent of the vehicles may include a component (slip yoke) that could break due to improper casting during the foundry process,” Toyota said in a statement. “Toyota is aware of one drive shaft slip yoke failure in a customer-owned vehicle. There are no reports of accidents or injuries associated with this condition. No other Lexus or Toyota vehicles are involved in this recall.”

Toyota will start notifying owners starting May 2011 and will also post this information on its website. Upon inspection, dealers will be identify a specific “production lot” number located on the rear drive shaft. Based upon the inspection results, in a limited number of cases, the rear drive shaft may need to be replaced.

Here is some quick boring recall news: Toyota is recalling 1,489 units of the FJ Cruiser and Tundra vehicles because the tire pressure monitoring system may not be properly calibrated. The recall covers 2011 FJ Cruisers 2009-2011 model year Tundras sold with accessory light-truck tires where the tire pressure warning lamp may not light-up if the pressure in any of the tires falls below the limit for when the lamp should turn on.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that the vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicles safety standard No. 138, ‘Tire Pressure Monitoring System.’ The agency said that the tire pressure monitoring systems in the Toyota vehicles were not re-calibrated correctly and therefore do not start illuminating the low tire pressure warning at the required minimum activation pressure.

For a long time, American consumers considered Toyotas strong compacts and midsize sedans and nothing more. Toyota has been working hard to change that perception and make a name for itself in more niche fields. It took another step at the 2010 SEMA Show by unveiling the Toyota Tundra Sportsman, a project designed in collaboration with Bass Pro Shops. Both utility and visual upgrades make this the car both Toyota and Bass Pro Shops feel will best serve a consumer of how the two companies complete an outdoor sports experience.

A three inch suspension lift makes space for 18 inch Teflon-coated wheels with Mud grapplers, with the power from a 5.7 L V8 going to those wheels and waste from the engine going out through the truck bed to make the car better at crossing water. The truck bed is the focal point of the vehicle: it has everything an outdoorsman needs and wants in a home base and a transport mobile. Areas for meal preparation and sleeping arrangements are laid out alongside holding rosters for firearms and bow and arrow items, along with cleaning items. A small kitchen, complete with stove and sink, complements the collapsible 86 foot platform for sleeping quarters and a two person tent.

And this truck possesses good looks too, both inside and out. A variety of gray and black colors was used to give the vehicle a tough, understated look on the road that wouldn”t wear out or stand out in the wilderness. The Tundra Sportsman also has a touch of matte paint to keep the car unique, and a front bar to both give a stronger impression and to help the car while offroading. On the inside, electronic systems like GPS and weather devices complement new bucket seats in waterproff material and camouflage floor mats. The speakers have also been pumped up, to make them strong enough to provide a comfortable outdoor experience. All in all, the Tundra Sportsman seems like a pretty complete package for any hunter, daily driver, or mixture of the two. With Bass Pro Shops” outdoor experience behind it, it seems safe to say that the quality of the material and execution of concepts was well-done. The concept pickup will do tours around Bass Pro Shops after the SEMA Show- it may even be at a store near you!

2011 Toyota Tundra Gets More Powerful Base Engine

4.0-liter V6 Adds Dual Independent VVT-i for 270 Horsepower

New Trailer Sway Control Standard for All Models

Model Line Streamlined to Focus on Popular Configurations

TORRANCE, Calif. ““ Toyota has streamlined the Tundra full-size pickup truck line for 2011, focusing on the 28 most in-demand configurations. In addition, the Tundra”s base 4.0-liter V6 engine gains Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) for 2011, increasing power and performance. The 310-hp 4.6-liter and 381-hp 5.7-liter V8″s continue across the Tundra line.

Tundra”s comprehensive suite of towing equipment gains standard Trailer Sway Control for all 2011 models. This feature uses Tundra”s Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system to help counteract forces on the truck caused by a swaying trailer in tow.

The 2011 Tundra is offered in two grades (Tundra and Tundra Limited): three cab styles (Regular, Double Cab and Crew Max): three wheelbase lengths (126.8, 145.7 and 164.6 inches, depending on model and configuration): three bed lengths (78.7, 97.6 and for CrewMax only, 66.7-inches): and with three engine choices (one V6 and two V8″s).

In addition to the two model grades, Tundra offers the SR5 upgrade package that adds popular options at a value price. A Tundra Work Truck Package, also offered at a special value, is aimed at commercial truck buyers or customers who need a tough, no-frills truck with exceptional cargo and towing capacity. The package features vinyl seating and rubber flooring and is available in Regular and Double Cab configurations with any of the Tundra”s three engine choices.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Platinum Package available for the Tundra CrewMax Limited models offers numerous luxury features, such as heated and ventilated seats, sunroof, and wood grain-style trim.

Performance
The 4.0-liter Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC) V6 that”s standard in Tundra Regular and Double Cab models gets a performance boost for 2011 with the adoption of Dual Independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i). This is the same technology found on the 4.6-liter and 5.7-liter V8 engines. Horsepower increases to 270 from 236, and peak torque is now 278 lb.-ft. up from 266 lb-ft. The V6 is teamed with a five-speed automatic transmission with uphill/downhill shift logic.

The 4.6-liter i-Force V8 was added to the Tundra line for the 2010 model year and is available in all 2011 models. The DOHC 4.6 V8 features dual independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i). With 310 horsepower, 327 lb.-ft. of torque, the 4.6-liter V8 delivers a versatile combination of power and efficiency.

In addition to its impressive 381 horsepower at 5,000 rpm, the 5.7-liter i-Force V8 produces 401 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 3,600 rpm. Like the other Tundra engines, it uses an aluminum cylinder block and DOHC heads, along with Dual VVT-i. Tundra engines are equipped with the Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS). Butterfly valves inside the intake manifold switch the length of the intake runners in two stages, based on engine RPM and throttle angle, to optimize efficiency across the engine speed range.

Both the i-Force 5.7-liter and 4.6-liter V8 engines are teamed with a six-speed automatic transmission. A fluid warmer quickly brings the transmission fluid up to operating temperature to optimize cold-weather performance. Both V8″s meet the Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle (ULEV II) emissions certification.

Capability, Handling and Ride
Tundra’s advanced TripleTech frame uses wide, full-boxed frame rails for the front portion, a reinforced C-channel under the cab and an open C-channel underneath the bed to maximize strength, ride quality and durability. The double A-arm front suspension uses coil-over spring shock units, while a front-mounted steering rack helps enhance steering feel and response. The rear suspension uses staggered shocks mounted outboard of the springs to improve the shocks’ dampening efficiency. Spring rates are tuned to provide a flat vehicle stance when fully loaded.

The Tundra is equipped with standard 18 x 8 inch steel wheels with 255/70 R18 tires. Limited grade models get standard 18 x 8 inch aluminum alloy wheels with wider 275/65 R18 tires and optional 20-inch alloy wheels with 275/55 R20 tires are optional for Limited. An optional TRD Off-Road Package combines off-road tuned suspension featuring Bilstein gas-charged mono-tube shock absorbers, 285/70 R17 B.F. Goodrich off-road tires on 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lamps and special graphics.

The standard four-wheel disc brakes use large ventilated rotors: 13.9 inches and 1.26-inches thick, with four-piston calipers in front; 13.6 x 0.71-inch with two-piston calipers in the rear. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) are standard on all Tundra models. EBD optimizes brake pressure at each wheel for greater control under braking, especially when cornering. BA is designed to determine if the driver is attempting emergency braking. If the driver has not pressed firmly enough on the brake pedal to engage ABS, the system supplements the applied braking power until pedal pressure is released.

The standard Automatic Limited-Slip Differential (Auto-LSD) helps provide better acceleration in deep sand or mud and on mixed-friction surfaces. Compared to a conventional mechanical limited slip differential, the Auto-LSD system is much more responsive and has better wear characteristics. The combination of Auto-LSD and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) as standard equipment on every Tundra model was a significant first in the full-size pickup segment.

The Tundra”s VSC system integrates traction control (TRAC) and enhances traction on or off-road by helping to keep the vehicle going on its intended course. VSC detects front-wheel slide and rear-wheel slide during cornering and attempts to help control either condition with throttle intervention and/or by braking individual wheels.

Integration of these technologies also brings driver-selectable versatility to tackle just about any road surface or driving condition. In “normal” mode, VSC, TRAC and Auto-LSD all function to help enable traction and control capability. “TRAC Off” activates Auto-LSD to help extricate the Tundra from extreme conditions. The “VSC Off” mode turns off all three of these systems.

Tundra 4×4 models use a part-time, electronically controlled four-wheel drive system featuring a six-pinion planetary reduction gearset to provide 4×2, 4×4 Hi and 4×4 Lo ranges. The driver selects the drive mode using a dial on the dash. The rear differential in V6 and 4.6-liter V8 Tundra models uses a 9.5-inch ring gear, and the i-Force 5.7-liter models step up to a 10.5-inch ring gear ““ one of the largest in the segment.

Safety
All Tundra models feature the Toyota STAR SAFETY SYSTEM™ as standard, giving Tundra one of the most comprehensive arrays of safety technology in the full-size pickup truck category. The system includes ABS, EBD, BA, VSC and TRAC. Tundra was the first full-size pickup to feature standard front seat-mounted side and roll-sensing side curtain airbags in all models. Three-point seatbelts and adjustable headrests for all seating positions were likewise firsts in the segment. The front seatbelts include pretensioners and force limiters. All models are equipped with driver and front passenger knee airbags.

Comprehensive Towing Package
An available Tow Package on all Tundra i-Force V8 models increases towing capacity significantly, up to 10,400 pounds, depending on the model and drivetrain (see specifications sheet). A one-piece towing receiver is integrated into the frame prior to bed installation. The structure runs nearly two feet down the length of the frame and attaches to each side around the rear spring shackles’ cross-member with 12 bolts. Tow Package rear springs help provide level full-load rear suspension height and maintain full range of suspension travel.

The Tow Package also upgrades Tundra”s cooling and electrical systems. An integrated water-to-oil engine oil cooler helps handle the demands of towing under a full load, and a power steering fluid cooler is added, as well. The seven-pin towing hitch connector sits above the hitch to help avoid damage during high-departure-angle driving. Electrical upgrades include an under-dash connector pre-wire for a third-party trailer brake controller, both seven- and a four-pin trailer brake connectors near the hitch, and an up-rated alternator. On 5.7-liter models, telescoping towing mirrors are available.

With the Towing Package, the six-speed automatic transmission gains a TOW/HAUL shift mode, selectable by a dedicated switch. The TOW/HAUL shift mode applies specific logic for adjusting the throttle sensitivity and transmission shift control, favoring and holding lower gears when accelerating or decelerating to help enhance control and safety. New for 2011, and standard for all models, Trailer Sway Control uses the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) to help counteract handling forces applied to the truck in an effort to minimize the impact of trailer sway.

Exterior Design
Tundra offers three cab styles: two-door Regular Cab, four-door Double Cab, and the super-sized four-door CrewMax with the segment’s leading rear-seat legroom. From the side, the Tundra’s distinct “barbell” form with pronounced wheel arches conveys the truck’s inherent strength. Character lines and fender flares add dimension and strength.

Tundra Regular Cab and Double Cab models are offered in standard bed (78.7-inch) or long bed (97.6-inch) configurations while the CrewMax comes with a 66.7-inch bed; all beds are 22.2-in. deep. The Tundra’s lockable all-steel tailgate, with tailgate assist, eases down slowly with no slam and can easily be removed.

A standard cargo lamp illuminates the bed at night. A deck rail system, standard on Limited grade models and available on all others, adds to cargo bed versatility. Featuring four adjustable tie-down cleats connected to the rails of the all-steel bed, the rail system can be used to secure many types of loads, with a 220-lb. rating per attachment.

Genuine Toyota Accessories available for the Tundra include a number of cargo bed enhancements: tonneau cover, bed mat, bed liner, bed extender, deck rail accessories, storage boxes, cargo divider, tie-downs and utility hooks.

Interior Design
Tundra is designed for “true truckers,” customers who place the greatest demands on their pickups, including ranchers, foremen and construction workers. The driver is surrounded by a U-shaped “command and control” center that provides an unobstructed view of the road and gauges, while keeping all controls within easy reach. The large door handles and easy-to-turn control knobs can be operated even while wearing work gloves. The 3.4-liter upper glove box can hold a standard Thermos™ bottle, with additional space available in the 9.5-liter lower glovebox.

The huge center console in bucket-seat models can hold a laptop computer or hanging file folder storage, which was a pickup truck first. There are two 12-volt DC power outlets, one on the dash and one in the center console. CrewMax models add a third outlet at the rear of the console; outlets remain live for up to two hours after the ignition is switched off.

The Tundra Regular Cab offers generous behind-the-seat storage, and the Double Cab features front-hinged rear doors that open up to 80 degrees. Double Cab models provide a roomy rear seat with a 22-degree backrest angle and 34.7 inches of rear legroom — on par with some midsize sedans. The Tundra CrewMax has limo-like maximum rear legroom of 44.5 inches, plus the segment’s only reclining and sliding rear seat. A 10-inch slide range allows the owner to tailor passenger comfort and room for onboard cargo. CrewMax models have additional storage under the rear seat.

On Double Cab and CrewMax models, the standard power rear windows retract completely into the doors. Regular and Double Cab models offer an optional split sliding rear window. A power vertical slide-down rear window is standard on CrewMax.

A concealed compartment to the right of the shift lever can hold a Thomas® guidebook. The built-in toolbox behind the rear seat in all models provides clean, accessible storage for the jack, handle and lug wrench. In Double Cab and CrewMax models, the rear seat backs fold in an easy one-hand operation to provide a flat floor storage area. The front doors have large storage pockets and can also hold two 22-ounce bottles. Rear doors on Double Cab and CrewMax each hold one bottle.

Comfort and Convenience
Inside Tundra, richly textured fabrics and deep-grain leathers are available in four colors. A standard manual tilt and telescoping steering wheel was a first in the segment, and Limited grade offers an available power tilt and telescoping steering wheel. The Limited grade”s four-spoke steering wheel features standard audio controls; they”re available for Double Cab models with the optional JBL® audio system or navigation system.

Tundra offers in-demand user technology, including available Bluetooth® phone compatibility, high-end JBL audio and an optional navigation system with integrated wide-screen rear backup camera. Tundra-grade models come with a standard AM/FM/MP3/CD, integrated satellite radio receiver (subscription required), an auxiliary input and six speakers (four speakers on Regular Cab). Limited models come standard with a JBL AM/FM/MP3 six-disc in-dash CD changer featuring an integrated satellite radio receiver with a complimentary three-month trial subscription to XM® Satellite Radio, AUX/USB input with iPod® connectivity, hands-free phone capability and music streaming via Bluetooth, steering wheel-mounted audio controls and 12 speakers with subwoofer (10 speakers on Double Cab).

All Tundra-grade models come standard with a versatile dual-zone manual climate control system including a seven-speed blower, sync-mode and a replaceable dust and pollen filter. Limited grade models feature a dual-zone automatic climate control system. The Tundra Limited grade Double Cab and Crew Max models add front and rear parking sonar, cold kit and mudguards to the standard equipment list. A multifunction auto-dimming rear view mirror, standard on Limited grade models and optional for others, integrates a digital compass and HomeLink® transceiver.

Standard High Solar Energy Absorbing (HSEA) glass helps filter solar heat and most UV (skin-sensitive) light energy entering the vehicle. This reduces occupants’ sun exposure, helps to keep the interior cooler and enhances durability of interior materials. Limited grade models receive standard IR-cut glass, further reducing solar levels.

Other notable features that distinguish the Limited grade models include a chrome billet grille; chrome power-retractable, heated auto-dimming side-view mirrors; leather-trimmed, heated power-adjustable front bucket seats (10-way for driver, four-way for passenger) and rear door privacy glass. Features inspired by luxury sedans include Optitron gauges and a multi-information center.

Options
The Tundra grade offers two optional audio systems. One features an AM/FM/CD, integrated XM Radio receiver, hands-free phone and streaming music via Bluetooth, AUX/USB inputs and up to six speakers. The other combines navigation and a value positioned six-speaker AM/FM/CD, auxiliary input, plus a backup camera.

CrewMax models offer a Rear Seat Entertainment (RSE) system that combines a nine-inch wide-screen LCD monitor, DVD player, two sets of wireless headphones and remote control. The available DVD navigation system also includes a rear backup camera. This feature is particularly useful when backing up the Tundra to a trailer, or for positioning a boat trailer on a launch ramp.

The Limited grade offers an optional power memory package for the seats, mirrors and tilt/telescopic steering wheel. CrewMax models offer an optional power tilt/sliding sunroof with an automatic variable-position wind deflector.

Limited Warranty
Toyota”s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60,000 miles and corrosion with no mileage limitation. Toyota dealers have complete details on the limited warranty.

While the Toyota Tundra originally made its debut around 1999/2000, it was the second-generation model introduced in 2006 that really made a huge effort to compete with competitor pickups from Detroit’s Big 3. Earlier this decade, Toyota spent more than $1 billion to develop a new Tundra, and spent about a billion more to build a plant in San Antonio, Texas, to manufacture it. However, the Japanese automaker just can’t figured out how to convince people to buy it over American built rivals.

“We believe from an engineering standpoint we met all of the targets,” Mike Sweers, told The Wall Street Journal. “As far as getting conquest buyers, no, we didn’t get as much as we expected.”

Sweers said that Toyota “is in the process of making the next generation a bit more traditional looking.”

“We need a more truck-like or bold styling than we currently have,” said Sweers. He also said Toyota will focus less on fuel-economy and more on the traditional aspects of a pickup.

Press Release:

Toyota Announces Prices for 2010 Tundra Pickup and Sequoia Sport Utility Vehicle

TORRANCE, Calif., April 23, 2009 – - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today announced manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) for the 2010 Tundra full-size pickup truck and Sequoia full-size sport utility vehicle (SUV).

Tundra

Prices for the 2010 Tundra will range from $22,960 for the Regular Cab 4×2 standard bed with a V6 engine and equipped with a Work Truck Package to $42,155 for the CrewMax Limited 4×4 with a 5.7-liter V8 engine. The new MSRPs reflect an average overall increase of $557.

Value is enhanced on all 2010 Tundra models with the addition of standard and optional exterior, mechanical, safety and convenience features including an all-new 4.6-liter i-FORCE V8 engine.

The new 4.6-liter V8 engine will be available on all 2010 model year Tundras. With 310 horsepower, 327 lb-ft. of torque and EPA fuel efficiency estimates of 15 mpg city and 20 mpg highway on 4×2 models, the new engine will deliver the best combination of power and fuel economy of any standard V8 in the full-size pickup segment. Like Tundra’s optional 5.7-liter i-FORCE V8 engine, the new 4.6-liter V8 will be mated with a six-speed automatic transmission.

All 2010 Tundra models receive a redesigned front grille and tail lamps. The Tundra grade will have a new two-bar grille design and the Limited grade will be equipped with a unique billet-style grille. Additional standard equipment on all Tundra models includes driver and front passenger knee airbags, height-adjustable headlamps, and a redesigned seven-pin towing hitch connector that sits above the hitch to help avoid damage during high departure angle driving. Also, a shelf to help organize storage space has been added to the lower glove box.

Two new optional audio systems will supplement three existing systems. The first, which is optional only on Tundra grade, features AM/FM/CD, integrated XM satellite radio receiver, hands-free phone and streaming music via Bluetoothr, auxiliary/USB inputs and up to six speakers. The second features navigation and a value positioned AM/FM/CD, auxiliary input, a backup camera monitor and six speakers.

New 2010 Tundra Work Truck Packages are aimed at commercial truck buyers or those who otherwise require a tough no-frills truck with exceptional cargo and towing capacity. The specialized trucks include vinyl seating and rubber flooring and will be available in Regular and Double Cab configurations with a V6 or one of two V8 engines including Tundra’s powerful 381 horsepower 5.7-liter V8 with a towing capability of up to 10,800 pounds. Tundra models equipped with optional work truck packages will carry a price adjustment that ranges from $195 to $1,030 less than the truck’s standard MSRP, depending on the model.

For buyers looking for a high level of refinement and convenience, the all-new Platinum Package will be available on 2010 Tundra CrewMax Limited models equipped with the 5.7-liter V8 and Flex Fuel powertrains. The package contains an assortment of high luxury features such as heated and ventilated seats, sunroof, and wood grain trim, and carries an MSRP of $4,662.

The 2010 Tundra, assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas in San Antonio, will begin arriving at dealerships in late April.

Sequoia

With the addition of popular standard equipment, including safety features, the base MSRP for Sequoia will range from $38,530 for the SR5 4×2 with a new 4.6-liter V8 engine to $58,905 for the Platinum 4×4 with a 5.7-liter V8. The new MSRPs reflect an average overall increase of $3,361 for all Sequoia models.

For 2010, Sequoia provides a much higher level of popular standard features and safety enhancements. The SR5 and Platinum grade models become mono-spec and the Limited grade offers only three stand alone options (navigation system, rear-seat entertainment and seven-passenger seating), giving consumers a more simplified buying process.

An all-new 4.6-liter i-FORCE V8 engine will be standard on Sequoia SR5 grades. When compared to the previous 4.7-liter i-FORCE V8, the new engine delivers 34 additional horsepower (310 hp) with a preliminary EPA fuel efficiency rating of 14 mpg/city and 19 mpg/highway, providing up to two more miles per gallon on the highway for 4×2 models. Sequoia’s powerful 5.7-liter i-FORCE V8 engine remains standard on all Limited and Platinum grades and optional on SR5 models. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

For enhanced safety, driver and front passenger knee airbags have been added as standard equipment on all Sequoia models. Standard audio has been upgraded to include Bluetoothr, satellite radio capability and MP3 interface with an auxiliary audio jack and USB port. Three new exterior colors include Sandy Beach Metallic, Spruce Mica and Blizzard Pearl.

The 2010 Sequoia, assembled at Toyota’s manufacturing facility in Princeton, Indiana, will begin arriving at Toyota dealers in late April.

Press Release:

Toyota to Reveal 2010 Tundra Pickup And New 4.6-liter V8 Engine at 2009 Chicago Auto Show

New Tundra Platinum and Work Truck Packages on Display

CHICAGO, February 11, 2009 – - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today debuted the 2010 Tundra full-size pickup truck and an all-new 4.6-liter V8 engine at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show.

On display are two new packages, including the debut of an all-new Tundra Platinum Package and the recently announced Tundra Work Truck. Value will be enhanced on all 2010 Tundra models with the addition of standard and optional exterior, mechanical, safety and convenience feature upgrades. The 2010 Tundras will arrive at dealerships in April.

The new 4.6-liter V8 engine will be available on all 2010 model year Tundra models. With 310 horsepower, 327 lb-ft. of torque and internal preliminary fuel efficiency estimates of 15 mpg city and 20 mpg on the highway, the new engine is expected to deliver the best combination of power and fuel economy among any standard V8 in the full-size pickup segment. Like Tundra”s optional 5.7-liter V8 engine, the new 4.6-liter V8 will be mated with a six-speed automatic transmission.

For Tundra buyers looking for a higher level of refinement and additional convenience features, the 2010 Tundra will offer a new Platinum Package that will be available on 2010 Tundra CrewMax Limited models equipped with the 5.7-liter V8 and Flex Fuel powertrains. The package contains a vast assortment of features that make the CrewMax Limited virtually monospec and will carry a manufacturers suggested retail price (MSRP) of $5,140.

On the outside, the Platinum Package includes a new Limited grade billet-style grille with chrome bumpers, unique 20-inch alloy wheels and tires, daytime running lamps, door sill protectors with a Platinum logo, and Platinum badging.

The Platinum Package will be available in four exterior colors that include Black, Silver, Slate, and Salsa Red.

Inside, the top-of-the-line package adds an array of luxury comfort and convenience features including a power memory function on the driver”s seat, outside power mirrors and puddle lamps, and a tilt and telescopic steering wheel. Also included in the Platinum Package is a power tilt and slide moonroof, navigation system, ventilated seats with a unique perforated leather seating surface, wood trimmed shift knob and door switch plates, auto up/down driver and front passenger windows, chrome accented HVAC vents and controls, and headrests with an embroidered Platinum logo.

With a focus on utility, the Tundra Work Truck Package is aimed at commercial truck buyers in industries such as farming, ranching and construction, or those who require a tough no-frills truck with exceptional cargo and towing capacity. The new work truck will be available on Tundra 4×2 and 4×4 Regular and four-door Double Cab models in standard and long bed configurations. It will be available with a V6 or one of two V8 engines including Tundra”s powerful 381 horsepower 5.7-liter i-Force V8, with a towing capability of up to 10,800 pounds.

Designed to deliver only the features commercial truck buyers need to get the job done, the Tundra work truck will be offered at a reduced MSRP. Tundra models equipped with the work truck are expected to carry a price adjustment that will range from $550 to $655 less than the truck”s standard MSRP, depending on the model. Final pricing of the work truck will be announced shortly before the vehicle goes on sale this spring.

On the outside, the Tundra work truck Package will include black bumpers and grille surround, replacing chrome. Power mirrors are replaced by manual outside rearview mirrors.

Inside, the truck comes with easily washable vinyl bench seats and rubber floors. To appeal to target buyers, several Tundra standard personal-use features have been replaced or removed. Tundra”s standard silver instrument panel and HVAC controls are replaced by basic black and include voltage, oil pressure and warning lamps in place of gauges. Lighting in the ignition key ring and the glove box are removed along with map and door courtesy lamps. The package also excludes cruise control and the remote keyless entry as standard features, although separate Work Truck packages will be offered with these features.

All 2010 Tundra models receive a freshened look with a redesigned front grille and taillamp design. The Tundra and SR5 grades will receive similar grille designs and the Limited grade will be equipped with a unique billet-style grille. Additional standard equipment on all Tundra models include driver and front passenger knee airbags, height-adjustable headlamps, and a redesigned seven-pin towing hitch connector that sits above the hitch to help avoid damage during high departure angle driving. Also, a shelf to help organize storage space has been added to the lower glovebox.

Two new optional audio systems supplement the three existing systems. The new Tech Audio system features AM/FM/CD, integrated satellite radio receiver, Bluetooth®, auxiliary and USB inputs and six speakers. In addition to the carryover JBL navigation system, a new non-JBL navigation system includes AM/FM/CD, auxiliary input, a backup camera monitor and six speakers.

Pricing for the 2010 Tundra will be announced closer to its launch in April.

Toyota today announced its first annual net loss in history – so it’s pretty surprising that the Japanese automaker will be dropping millions on advertising its new Venza crossover and its Tundra pickup. According to KickingTires, Toyota will drop $3 million each on Super Bowl XLIII commercials for its Venza and Tundra models.

Two Super Bowl’s ago, Toyota heavily advertised its Tundra pickup which was well-received. However, now do the huge drop in demand in the SUV and pickup segment it’s puzzling to us why Toyota would drop so much on Super Bowl XLIII ads pitching these two segments. A better pick would be the 2010 Toyota Prius hybrid which hits dealers in April.

The Tundra ad will be titled “Killer Heat” and will show the large pickup handling some extreme circumstances. The Venza ad will ask you “Are you a Venza?”

Toyota will be staying away from the pickup sales war this year. According to Toyota’s president of U.S. sales, Toyota will stay away from engaging in a war between the Big 3′s pickups.

“I don’t want to get stuck in the middle of Ford and Chevy battling for the No. 1 truck this year, and Dodge launching the Ram,” Lentz said in an interview at the 2008 Paris Motor Show.

And there’s a good reason why. Sales of the Toyota Tundra fell 60.7 percent last month. Chevrolet, on the other hand, sold 50,428 Silverados falling just 3.9 percent. Ford dropped 41.9 percent while Dodge’s Ram was off 30.9 percent – but we’re guessing that’s because buyers are waiting for the 2009 models to enter showrooms.

Lentz said he doesn’t see a point for Toyota to compete in a segment that fell below 1.5 million units from 25. million units. Makes sense to use Lentz – just stick to compact cars and hybrids.
