On the heels of Toyota’s interest in building more interesting cars and of course the introduction of the /GT 86/Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ, it would only make sense that Toyota is working on a new Supra.

The technical bits or suggestions at this point indicate the Lexus GS’s 3.5 liter engine and hybrid powertrain tuned to about 400 bhp, possibly with four wheel drive. Aesthetics wise, it seems that the FT-HS concept shown at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show might be a good indication of things to come.

Click here for our original post on the Toyota GT 86.

Waiting though still will be the name of the game for a while and Toyota is not interested in releasing the car until 2014-2015, meanwhile, a similar powertrain is being fitted in the Lexus IS coupe, which may lead to a niche issue if the cars end up being mechanically similar.

It seems like that the Toyota GT 86 and the Scion FR-S aren’t the only two sports cars the Japanese automaker has to offer. While the rear-wheel-drive sports cars are eating up headlines day-after-day, new reports suggest that Toyota is likely to develop a Supra successor – and that by far, is music to an enthusiast’s ear.

“Right now the 86 will be a mid-size sports car,” said that Toyota GT 86′s chief engineer Tetsuya Tada. “I would like to have one smaller and one larger. One would probably be a Supra follower. Nothing has been decided yet. It would be like a Supra successor.”

Tada said the car could be another joint venture with Subaru, which it co-developed the BRZ and GT 86 with.

Click here for our original post on the Toyota GT 86.

While a successor to the Toyota Supra has us all excited, we’re also looking forward to the smaller car Tada is talking about. Word has it that Toyota may be working on a competitor to the Mazda Miata – and who wouldn’t want to see that?

Refresher: Power for the Toyota GT 86 comes from a 2.0 liter 4-clyinder boxer engine making 197-hp at 7,000 rpm with a maximum torque of 151 lb-ft at 6,600 rpm. The engine is mated standard to a 6-speed manual transmission with an available 6-speed automatic. The Toyota GT 86 will go on sale in the United States next year as the Scion FR-S.

We’ve been hearing about Porsche doing a Supra successor for years now. Most recently, it as reported earlier this month that a replacement for the Toyota Supra will show up in concept form at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. Toyota has yet to confirm anything but reports suggest that the model should hit showrooms sometime in 2014.

While we sit here and wait for Toyota to confirm or hint at something, new photo renderings courtesy of Andreas Fougner have popped up on the Internet.

Of course, this is just a personal take on what the next Supra could look like – but we definitely like what we see.

The 2011 Tokyo Motor Show in october may not have a lot of American automaker’s showing up, but domestic automakers will be shining. Reports suggest that Toyota and Lexus have some interesting debuts scheduled for the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show including a special-edition Lexus LFA and a likely Supra replacement.

Known as the Lexus LFA Tokyo Edition, the special-edition supercar will get a carbon fiber roof, rear spoiler, and other touches to differentiate it from the ‘regular’ LFA.

A roadster version of the Lexus LFA was expected to debut in Tokyo, but the model has reportedly been shelved due to the economic uncertainty in markets around the world.

Now don’t confuse this next car with the Toyota FT-86, which will debut in Tokyo in production form. CAR Magazine has learned that Toyota is indeed working on a successor to the Supra and the Japanese automaker may show us something in Tokyo – in concept form. A Supra replacement is expected to debut sometime in 2014.

We’ve heard a lot of rumors recently on Toyota reviving the ‘Supra’ brand and coming out with a successor for the sports car in four years time – well, all that might actually become a reality. According to CARandDRIVER, Toyota has applied to trademark the Supra name. The documents were filed with U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on July 16 as the company’s previous trademark on the name expired in 2006 and Toyota didn’t really care to renew it at the time.

At a recent press event with the media, Toyota’s CEO Akio Toyoda said that he “wants to see the next Supra tested in the near future.” He said that he “would like to create a car that is better than the Supra” and he was “not against the idea” of pushing it through development.

Insiders say that if the car is built, it will have a V6 hybrid powertrain.

Another possibility for reviving the ‘Supra’ name is having a name for the upcoming production version of the Toyota FT-86. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

While Toyota works hard with Subaru on getting the production Toyota FT-86 rear-wheel-drive sports coupe on the road, the Japanese automaker is also working on a successor to the MR2 and a replacement for the Supra. Both models are expected to hit markets within the next four years.

The Toyota MR2 replacement is due in 2013 and will carry a hybrid powertrain with a 1.5L gasoline engine. Original plans called for a V6 hybrid powertrain but the success of the CR-Z in Japan has changed thinking of engineers.

The Toyota Supra, which was originally previewed by the FT-HS concept at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, was confirmed to be shelved. However, increasing hybrid sales have given the Supra a second chance. Insiders say that the next-generation Supra is likely to carry a V6 hybrid powertrain.

Till this day, the ultimate sports car for Toyota enthusiasts remains the Toyota Supra. The beloved Toyota sports car ended production in 2002, and ever since there has been continuos speculation of a successor.

First time at egmCarTech? Visit our home page for the latest news.

When the Toyota FT-HS Hybrid Concept made its debut back in 2007, the possibility of a Supra successor started to look bright; however, Toyota later said that sports car just have a lesser priority on the company’s to-do list.

Well, according to the insiders at 7Tune, work has secretly continued on a Supra successor and with enthusiast Akio Toyoda now taking over as CEO, we’re probably closer than ever to a new Toyota Supra.

Internally known as the 086A, a prototype is expected to be completed by the end of 2009. The car has moved out of design phase and sources say that Toyota is looking at a 3.5L V6 engine that will be mated to the current Toyota Crown hybrid system delivering a total of 400-hp to the rear-wheel-drive sports car.

As reported before, the Supra successor is expected to debut in late 2011.

So you’re still weeping about Honda canning the Acura NSX. Don’t worry – because despite the global economic crisis there are still a couple of high-performance cars that will still come out of Japan for you to drool over.

According to Inside Line, Nissan is still working on four-door GT-R that will be badged an Infiniti for 2011. Around the same time, we will also see a GT-R SUV. That’s right, Nissan is allegedly working on a GT-R based SUV to rival the Porsche Cayenne.

While the NSX has been shelved, Inside Line says that Honda is working on an all-new two-door Beat that will be powered by an upgraded 800cc engine. Also, the Japanese automaker has yet to delay the redesigned S2000 which is slated for a 2011 debut.

Lexus is still working on the $340,000 V10 LF-A which is expected to arrive in 12 to 18 months. Toyota itself has plans for a V6 Supra in its product pipeline scheduled for a 2011 debut.

Will all this become a reality? Only time will tell if Inside Line is right about their findings.
