The Prius PHV, Toyota’s first plug-in hybrid, will be available for order in Japan as of January 30, after its debut that hit just before this week’s Tokyo Motor Show.

Sales for the Prius Plug-in Hybrid are projected to reach 60,000 per year, with the bulk of these sales in Japan, anticipated around 35,000 – 40,000 units per year.

Toyota’s rechargeable ride is going for about $41,000 USD, which will be significantly reduced after incentives the Japanese government has in place. US prices will be much lower at $32,000.

The successful Prius, which has sold about 3.4 million models globally since its 1997 release, has the brand moving forward in the direction of electric cars. With EV’s targeted at city commuters, more models will be introduced next year, along with an expansion in the segment in Europe.

Sales in the U.S. start later next month.

Refresher: The 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid is powered by the same Hybrid Synergy Drive system used in the regular Prius – a 98-hp 1.8 liter 4-cylinder that runs on the Atkinson cycle and contributes to a maximum 134 total system horsepower. The system uses two electric motors, one 80-hp unit that works to power the transaxle, and another smaller motor that works as the electric power source for battery regeneration and as a starter for the gas engine. A newly 4.4 kWh lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery pack replaces the standard Prius’ nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery and fits under the rear cargo floor. Reaching full-charge takes 2.5 to 3.0 hours using a 120v household outlet or 1.5 hours using a 240v outlet. Full EV operation comes in at 15 miles at speeds up to 62 mph.

While many sports car enthusiasts may be happy to hear this, treehuggers may shed a tear or two. Sales of the top-selling hybrid since 1997 – the Toyota Prius – have declined 9.4 percent through Oct. 2011 from a year ago.

Worry not though nature lovers. Toyota says that sales of the Prius will rebound with increased inventory, rising gas prices and new Prius models.

“When Toyota is 70 percent of the market and we had to stop Prius production for almost 90 days, it should be no big shock to anybody that the overall hybrid sales volume dropped this year,” said Jim Lentz, president of Toyota’s U.S. sales unit. “It wasn’t due to lack of demand. It was lack of supply.”

Click here for more news on the Toyota Prius.

Starting as early as later this year, the standard Toyota Prius will be joined by the Prius V and the Prius Plug-in Hybrid. Toyota says the additions to the Prii lineup will help boost sales recovery in 2012.

The Prius isn’t the only hybrid that has been struggling. Honda’s Insight fell 21 percent during the first 10 months of 2011 and Ford’s Fusion Hybrid fell 48 percent during the same period.

Toyota, the leader in the hybrid game, is now looking to takeover the hydrogen fuel-cell market. The Japanese automaker said that it is planning global sales of a few thousand fuel-cell vehicles by 2015 and that number will be limited due to the fueling architecture and the high price of the vehicles.

“We could expect a fuel cell vehicle to retail at about 100,000 euros ($138,000) in Europe,” said Toyota Europe Vice President for Product Planning & Marketing Alain Uyttenhoven.

The move is being made as automakers explore a range of new green technologies to help them meet tougher fuel-economy rules.

“We see pure battery-powered vehicles to be just a solution for small trips in the city, while a plug-in gasoline-electric hybrid is the best solution both for weekday urban commuting and weekend trips,” Uyttenhoven said.

The Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid vehicle will go on sale early next year.

Over the past couple years, GM attempted to reinvent the wheel with the Volt in the same way that Toyota reinvented the wheel when developing the second generation Prius: has it paid off? Now that there is a Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid, how does it stack up against the Chevrolet Volt in cost per mile? The answer is that at some level, we are splitting hairs. The Volt costs less per mile to operate, assuming the distance is under 70 miles. Good mark for GM then; many folks enjoy a commute of under 70 miles, so this makes sense for them.

Furthermore, as GE will be purchasing 12,000 Volts over the next few years, and placing charging stations with them, it should be easier for consumers to adopt the Volt as reliable, sensible and clean American transportation.

For those bent on the American side of things, the Volt is built in the US, but so is the Prius. Certainly both cars are composed of parts from all over the world, bringing into question their viability as environmentally friendly cars, but many and most marques are guilty of this in their regular production vehicles.

The bigger issue at hand especially in this economy is cost: GE can afford the $10,000 premium of the Volt, but can consumers? This is a highly specialized market; those interested in saving money on a commuter car might not be interested in kicking out an extra ten grand just to get an American badge.

Toyota’s Chevrolet Volt competitor is here! The Japanese automaker today officially introduced the new 2012 Prius Plug-in Hybrid, which will hit dealerships in 14 launch states beginning this October through Toyota’s Online Order System at www.toyota.com. Deliveries of the 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid strat in Spring 2012.

The launch states include California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia. A national rollout is planned for 2013.

The 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid is powered by the same Hybrid Synergy Drive system used in the regular Prius – a 98-hp 1.8 liter 4-cylinder that runs on the Atkinson cycle and contributes to a maximum 134 total system horsepower.

The 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid allows for full EV operation for up to 15 miles at speeds up to 62 mph on a full charge.

So what’s the fuel-economy figures like. Toyota say that the 2012 Prius Plug-in Hybrid is estimated to average 87 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) in combined driving and 49 MPG in hybrid mode.

Prices for the 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid start at $32,000 for the base model and $39,525 for the Plug-in Hybrid Advanced model. Toyota says that the 2012 Prius Plug-in Hybrid is expected to qualify for a federal tax credit of approximately $2,500.

Press Release:

Toyota Introduces 2012 Prius Plug-in Hybrid

Extended Electric Range

Selectable EV Mode

Expected 87 MPGe

Quick Home Charging

RICHMOND, Calif. (Sept. 16, 2011) – Toyota, the world leader in hybrid passenger cars and SUVs, introduced the Prius Plug-in Hybrid at the annual Green Drive Expo here today, as the newest member of the Prius Family.

Joining the popular third-generation Prius Liftback and the new Prius v, the new Prius Plug-in combines the benefits of the standard Prius model’s hybrid vehicle operation with extended electric vehicle (EV) driving and more affordable pricing than pure electric or range-extender type vehicles. The 2012 Prius Plug-in Hybrid, which offers seating for five, is expected to achieve a manufacturer-estimated 87 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) in combined driving and 49 MPG in hybrid mode.

Toyota has sold more than one million Prius models in the United States since the first-generation model was introduced for model-year 2001. The recent introduction of the larger Priusv and now the Prius Plug-in Hybrid brings this eco-focused model range to four distinct vehicles, including the Prius c, which will debut in 2012.

The 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid will allow true EV operation and performance for up to 15 miles at speeds up to 62 mph, along with quick home charging using a standard AC outlet and 15-amp dedicated circuit. Operating in EV mode, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid provides the quick, smooth quiet driving of a pure electric vehicle. The Prius Plug-in Hybrid offers the same five-passenger seating and luggage space as the standard Prius model.

The 2012 Prius Plug-in Hybrid retains the Hybrid Synergy Drive of the standard Prius model and will seamlessly switch into hybrid operation at a pre-determined state of battery charge. A newly developed 4.4 kWh lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery pack replaces the standard Prius model’s nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery and fits under the rear cargo floor, and the vehicle adds an easy-to-use external charging cable.

A full charge using an external AC outlet takes approximately 2.5 to 3.0 hours using a 120v household outlet or 1.5 hours using a 240v outlet. The included 120v charging cable connects to the charging port inlet located on the right-rear fender.

In addition to offering Entune™, Toyota’s new multimedia system, available smartphone applications developed for the Prius Plug-in Hybrid include Charge Management, Remote Air Conditioning System, Charging Station Map, Vehicle Finder and Eco Dashboard.

Introduction of the 2012 Prius Plug-in Hybrid follows an extensive test-fleet program involving 125 early prototypes in the United States. Toyota applied experience from that test phase, along with input from participants, to finalize engineering and improve features for the production model.

Performance and Economy

Even with the addition of the new onboard battery charging system and larger 176-lb. Li-ion battery pack, the 2012 Prius Plug-in Hybrid weighs just 123 lbs. more than the standard Prius Liftback, thanks to weight-savings techniques applied elsewhere. As a result, driving performance for the 2012 Prius Plug-in Hybrid will be similar to the standard Prius.

Running in EV mode, the system switches to full hybrid mode under full acceleration, which splits engine power between the drive wheels and the generator, keeping the battery charged – just as in the standard Prius model.

Even when not running in the driver-selectable EV mode, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid will rely more on its electric-only capability in situations where it is more efficient than running the gasoline engine, especially in urban and suburban driving and during shorter trips when drivers will enjoy the smoothness and quiet of EV operation. The overall fuel economy rating for the Prius Plug-in Hybrid increases to a manufacturer-expected 87 MPGe, with the car achieving an estimated 49 MPG when operating in hybrid mode. Drivers who use the vehicle for frequent short trips and local driving will realize the biggest reduction in gasoline usage.

EV and Hybrid Operation

The Prius Plug-in operates much the same way as the standard Prius model while offering extended EV range and plug-in charging. Current Prius owners will feel instantly familiar with the new model while enjoying more benefits of EV driving.

The Plug-in Hybrid system consists of a large-capacity Li-ion battery and an external battery-charging port connected to the standard Prius Hybrid Synergy Drive system.

Toyota developed the new compact, lightweight, high-output battery specifically for the Prius Plug-in Hybrid. The 4.4 kWh battery pack includes a battery charger located under battery that features an internal cooling fan. The hybrid system’s inverter and has been optimized for the new, higher-capacity battery. In addition, the hybrid cooling system uses a larger heat exchanger and higher-capacity fan motor.

As in the standard Prius Hybrid model, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid shuts down the gasoline engine at a stop and accelerates away with the hybrid battery providing electricity to the front motor; the Prius Plug-in Hybrid can rely on battery power alone for longer distances and higher speeds than the standard Prius. It features a new battery state-of-charge gauge, and a standard multi-information display panel monitors fuel and energy consumption to help encourage economical driving habits.

New multi-information display additions have been included in the Prius Plug-in. A new EV Drive Ratio display records the ratio of driving distance covered by EV power, and the Hybrid System Indicator shows possible EV driving range when in EV mode. An Eco Savings Record screen, new to both the 2012 updated Prius and the Prius Plug-in, allows drivers to measure their savings over a customizable pre-set comparison vehicle. The pre-set areas include fuel cost for a gallon of gas and miles-per-gallon average.

Charging the Prius Plug-in Hybrid

The external charging system is designed to be easy and safe to use. Approximately 24 feet in length, the battery charger cable weighs just 3.75 lbs. and conveniently fits its own compartment in the trunk area.

The port is located behind a spring-loaded push-open door on the right-rear fender. A full charge using an external AC outlet takes approximately 2.5-3.0 hours using a 120V household outlet with a dedicated 15-amp circuit, or 1.5 hours using a 240V outlet. The charge port provides LED (Light Emitting Diode) illumination for convenient nighttime charging. A timer allows charging to take place during off-peak hours and can be set for both start and end times.

In the event of a malfunction, the CCID (Charging Circuit Interrupter Device) in the cable will stop the flow of electricity for safety, and the indicator lamp will flash. There is also a self-test button, similar to that used on household kitchen and bathroom electrical outlets. A special rubber stopper prevents the charging port door from snapping shut when closing.

Leviton Level 2 (240V) Home Charging Stations

Leviton, an approved provider of Level 2 (240V) home charging stations, has developed a residential program exclusively tailored for Prius Plug-in customers. The program will include a one-stop solution for home charging stations, installation services for 120V and 240V applications, and dedicated support for Toyota customers. The program will also offer Level 2 (240V) 16-amp and 30-amp home charging stations designed exclusively for the Prius Plug-in (UL-certified, compact design, easy-to-use, and made in the U.S.A.), industry-leading pricing for Level 2 (240V) with basic packages and a Toyota-dedicated e-commerce web portal (leviton.com/Toyota) with product information, order tracking, and other features. Prius Plug-in customers will be able take advantage of Leviton’s special pricing starting early October.

Packaging and Weight Optimization

A key goal for development of the Prius Plug-in was to deliver the optimal balance of performance, range, economy, packaging and affordable price. The new model delivers extended EV range without sacrificing roominess for passengers or for luggage.

The compact high-output Li-ion battery pack is installed under the rear luggage area. Width, height and length of the luggage space remain the same as the Liftback. There is no reduction in rear seat passenger room from the standard Prius model, with seating for three and 36.0 inches of legroom that is on par with midsize sedans.

Significantly, the biggest change in packaging from the Prius Plug-in Hybrid test-fleet model is the smaller, more efficient battery pack in the production model. The new battery pack is approximately one-half the weight of the demonstration-phase vehicle, yet provides about 15-percent more range.

The 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in has a weight of 3,165 lbs. versus 3,042 lbs. for the Prius Liftback and 3,373 lbs. for the Plug-in test-fleet model. Suspension tuning has been altered in accordance with the change in weight distribution from the standard Prius model.

The Prius Plug-in reduced vehicle weight in other areas as well. In place of a spare tire, the Prius Plug-in carries a tire-sealing kit and inflator. The trunk floor panel features a reinforced honeycomb design and is about half the weight of the standard model’s floor panel, while the charging cable stores in a compartment at the rear edge of the trunk floor.

As on the standard Prius model, weight was saved through use of aluminum in the hood, rear hatch, front stabilizer bar and brake calipers and by using super high-tensile strength steel in the inner rocker panel, center pillar and roof reinforcement.

All Prius models are built using processes that reduce emissions in every stage of the vehicle lifecycle, from production and driving, through eventual disposal and dismantling years down the road. Toyota uses plant-derived, carbon-neutral plastics in Prius models. Known as “ecological plastic,” the material is used in the seat cushion foam, cowl side trim, inner and outer scuff plates, and deck trim cover. Ecological plastic emits less CO2 during the production process than conventional plastic, and it also helps reduce petroleum use.

Exclusive Trim Levels

Externally, the Prius Plug-in inherits the standard model’s exceptionally low coefficient of drag at 0.25 Cd. The current Prius had received more wind tunnel hours of testing than any other Toyota in history, resulting in one of the cleanest aerodynamic profiles of any mass-produced vehicle in the world.

The 2012 Prius Plug-in is distinguished from the standard Prius model by exclusive exterior trim, including chrome-like finish for the door handles, front grille, rear license plate garnish and the battery charging door. Unique badges, blue-accent headlamps and LED taillight clusters also identify the new model. It is available in five exterior colors, including the new Clearwater Blue.

The new Prius Plug-in will be offered in two trim levels, standard and Advanced. The standard trim level provides all of the features of the Prius Two Liftback grade, plus some features from the upscale Prius Three and Prius Four grades. The Prius Plug-in Hybrid also makes standard a new touch-screen Display Audio and navigation system with rear backup camera and Toyota’s new Entune™ multimedia services.

The Prius Plug-in comes standard with unique wheels, LED Daytime Running Lights, new driver-feedback screens, heated front seats, Smart Key System on three doors with push-button start and remote illuminated entry, and the Touch Tracer Display. The latter features touch sensors on the steering wheel switches that are designed to reduce driver eye movement for better concentration on the road. When the driver touches the audio or info switch located on the steering wheel, a duplicate image is displayed on the instrument panel, directly in front of the driver.

The Advanced trim level adds Head-Up Display, LED headlamps, SofTex interior seat trim, eight-way adjustable power driver seat, a JBL® premium audio and HDD navigation system and exclusive Entune Plug-in Hybrid Applications for smartphones. Additional safety features in the Advanced level include the Pre-Collision System with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Safety Connect system. The latter can access a call center with a live operator who can dispatch police and emergency vehicles. The system combines automatic collision notification and a stolen vehicle locator feature, which can track the location of the stolen vehicle via GPS and help guide police to recover it.

Hybrid Synergy Drive

The Hybrid Synergy Drive system in the Prius Plug-in Hybrid is essentially the same as in the current third-generation Prius and new Prius v models. The system uses two high-output electric motors, one 60kw (80 hp) unit that mainly works to power the compact, lightweight transaxle, and another smaller motor that works as the electric power source for battery regeneration and as a starter for the gas engine. Maximum motor-drive voltage is 650 volts DC.

Hybrid Synergy Drive is a series-parallel hybrid system that can provide power either from the engine alone, or the electric motor/generator alone, or any mix of both. A hybrid control computer manages the system so that optimum power is delivered according to driver demand. A start/stop system and regenerative braking also help to conserve fuel, the latter recharging the battery upon deceleration.

Hybrid Synergy Drive is built around a specially adapted, efficient 98-horsepower 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that runs on the Atkinson cycle and contributes to a maximum 134 total system horsepower. Key components include an electric water pump that requires no belts, and an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system that helps warm the engine quickly, reducing fuel consumption when the engine is cold.

The compact and lightweight gasoline engine produces low noise and vibration. Sophisticated valve control, injector design, and other technologies help reduce emissions to allow the Prius Plug-in to qualify for an enhanced ATPZEV emissions rating. A new low-pressure fuel-vapor containment tank system releases pressure in the tank for the engine to consume the generated vapor.

Remote Climate Control Operation for Comfort and Conservation

The Prius Plug-in features a standard automatic climate control system. The remote air conditioning feature can be activated by the key fob while the vehicle is being charged to cool the interior. This feature can help enhance fuel consumption by using the external AC power source to provide comfortable cabin temperature before entering the car. As in the standard Prius, an ECO switch operates to prioritize fuel economy when the air conditioning is running. On the Advanced model a Smartphone can be used to start cooling the cabin.

For quick interior heating in cold climates, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid features standard two-position front seat heaters and a supplementary electric heater.

Safety

Like all Toyota models, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid will feature as standard Toyota’s Star Safety System™, which includes Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, and the Smart Stop Technology brake-override system. An available Pre-Collision System (PCS), paired with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, retracts seatbelts and applies the brakes in certain conditions when a frontal crash is determined to be unavoidable. The Prius Plug-in will also come standard with seven airbags. Also available is Safety Connect, which includes automatic collision notification, stolen vehicle locator, emergency assistance button (SOS) and roadside assistance (three-year complimentary subscription included).

Entune Multimedia System

The 2012 Prius Plug-in is among a number of Toyota models that offer the new Entune multimedia system. This innovative new system leverages mobile smartphones to provide a richer in-vehicle experience with fully integrated access to navigation, entertainment and information services.

Toyota Entune debuts the first-ever support for engaging mobile apps, such as Bing™, OpenTable®, and MovieTickets.com, along with accessing useful travel-related services, such as live weather, traffic, fuel information (location and price), stocks, and sports. Toyota Entune brings the largest selection of music options available to a vehicle, including iHeartRadio’s 750+ stations, and the Pandora®personalized music service.

Access to Entune services (and Plug-in Hybrid Applications in the Advanced trim level) is complimentary for three years. The audio systems combined with Entune feature a best-in-class, advanced conversational voice recognition system that helps the driver to stay focused on the road by eliminating the need to memorize thousands of voice commands. The system will also allow for audio read-back and replay capabilities for text messages, with the ability to respond by pre-set quick-reply messages such as: “I’m driving and will reply later.”

Peace of Mind Warranty Protection

Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60,000 miles and against corrosion with no mileage limitation. The hybrid-related components, including the HV battery, battery control module, hybrid control module and inverter with converter, and the battery-charging system and cable/connector, are covered for eight years/100,000 miles (10 years/150,000 miles for CARB states).

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid will also come standard with Toyota Care, a complimentary plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance and 24-hour roadside assistance for three years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Toyota’s executive vice president of R&D and engineering, Takeshi Uchiyamada, is anticipating that 20 percent of global vehicle sales will be extended-range plug-in hybrids by 2020.

Hybrid sales in Japan are already at 20 percent, however most other developing areas are below 10 percent, or just hitting that mark.

The market share for Toyota’s hybrids has been up to 80 percent in the U.S, however, emerging competition has lowered that figure, recently. Toyota plans on maintaining or exceeding the market share with the Prius C, Prius V, and Prius Plug-In, along with the Camry Hybrid.

After the disaster hit Japan in March, Toyota had a hard time overcoming the loss of a supplier network, so the brand is now considering making some of the more instrumental parts outside of Japan as well.

Takeshi Uchiyamada says that “We are entering a stage of possible local procurement. We needs to do that to keep our competitiveness.”

In regards to electric vehicles, Uchiyamada feels that they are not going to meet sales expectations because “Based on the current data, the targets announced by other players show they are not on track.”

From the looks of it, the Avensis is receiving a nice makeover – a makeover that’s long due since 2008.

“The changes to the British-built Avensis include revised exterior styling, incorporating a frontal treatment that follows Toyota’s new design language,” Toyota said in a statement. “The quality look and feel of the interior have been improved and strategic changes have been made to the powertrains and driving dynamics. Together, these changes represent the largest mid-life investment Toyota has made for any model.”

The new Toyota Avensis will be joined by the Prius Plug-in Hybrid and the seven-seat Prius+ along with the 2012 Toyota Hilux and Toyota Yaris.

As part of Toyota’s efforts to find how well their Prius plug-in hybrid works in the real world, Toyota leased 20 third-generation Prius plug-ins through EDF Energy, a leasing program that works with businesses and fleet management in London, UK.

Just recently, the study hit its first year out of three, which began last summer. That said, Toyota was able to posts results, in which they say the Prius plug-in hybrid does 27% better than the equivalent diesel in terms of fuel economy.

Click here for more news on the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid.

Through collecting data from the cars themselves, Toyota found the following:

Average journey distance has been 7.3 miles, with 59 per cent of all journeys covering between 3.1 and 12.4 miles

Average speed has been 17.7mph, with 69 per cent of journeys at speeds less than 18.6mph

Initial fuel consumption data indicate performance is 27 per cent better than an equivalent diesel

Average recharging time is 72 minutes

Where drivers have access to a domestic charge point, more frequent recharging occurs

That said, Toyota found that the Prius plug-in hybrid’s performance does well to cater to the demands of urban driving in the UK. For example, the EV range for the Prius plug-in is about 12.5 miles depending on conditions and the driver, which Toyota says is sufficient enough to cover most day-to-day travelling. And thanks to the 1.8L four-banger that’s included in the Prius hybrid package, any “range anxiety” that comes from these new EVs and plug-ins is virtually non-existent.

Press Release:
UG-IN HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLES POST POSITIVE RESULTS IN TOYOTA AND EDF ENERGY LONDON LEASING PROGRAMME

■Interim data deliver encouraging results for Toyota Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)
■Majority of journeys logged are at an average speed and cover an average distance that allow the greater fuel efficiency and low emissions benefits of PHEV to be realised
■Early indications show average fuel consumption in London area 27 per cent better than an equivalent diesel car
■London findings support intelligence gathered from Toyota PHEV programmes Europe-wideInterim findings from Toyota and EDF Energy’s demonstration of the Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) in London give encouraging, real-world data that show the technology can deliver greatly improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions in urban driving. At the same time, the car’s easy-to-drive character and its ability to cover long distance trips is being appreciated by the fleet operators taking part in the programme.Working in partnership with EDF Energy, the UK’s largest producer of low carbon electricity, Toyota has leased 20 PHEVs to London-based businesses and organisations to monitor both vehicle performance and recharging patterns. Based on the third-generation Prius, the PHEV is equipped with a lithium-ion battery that lets the car be driven for longer distances and at higher speeds on electric power alone. Battery charge can be topped up simply by plugging the car into a dedicated electricity supply at the driver’s workplace, on-street charging point or home.

Interim data findings
Details of journey times, speeds and distances, fuel usage and vehicle recharging have been logged since the three-year demonstration began last summer. Information gathered so far in the UK shows that:

■Average journey distance has been 7.3 miles, with 59 per cent of all journeys covering between 3.1 and 12.4 miles
■Average speed has been 17.7mph, with 69 per cent of journeys at speeds less than 18.6mph
■Initial fuel consumption data indicate performance is 27 per cent better than an equivalent diesel*
■Average recharging time is 72 minutes
■Where drivers have access to a domestic charge point, more frequent recharging occurs

These results show that PHEV’s performance is well-suited to the demands of urban driving: the car is capable of running for up to 12.5 miles solely on its electric motor in EV mode – battery charge and road conditions permitting – at speeds up to 62mph. This means it can accomplish the great majority of typical urban journeys with zero petrol consumption and tailpipe emissions.

Furthermore, should the battery charge be used up in the course of a journey, or before a recharging opportunity, PHEV will seamlessly switch to power from its full hybrid system, which includes a 1.8-litre VVT-i petrol engine. This means the driver need suffer no “range anxiety” about the distance the car can cover.

User perceptions of the PHEV are also being monitored through regular interviews with drivers conducted and analysed by Oxford Brooks University. Feedback received so far shows a very positive response to the car and its performance, and to the procedure and equipment used for charging.

Pan-European results
The experience already gained from the London demonstration supports the positive results Toyota is witnessing with its PHEV demonstration programmes with 200 cars in 18 countries across Europe, including a large-scale project with EDF involving 100 PHEVs in the French city of Strasbourg.

Data analysed from the full European programme show average fuel consumption that is 36 per cent better than a best-in-class diesel car of equivalent size, and 49 per cent better than a similar size best-in-class petrol model.

The results show that PHEV’s 12.5-mile (20km) EV range is sufficient to cover most day-to-day travel needs of the drivers taking part in the programme – the average European journey distance is 8.2 miles (13.2km), and two thirds of all journeys are of less than 12.5 miles.

Twenty-two per cent of drivers have even been able to drive further than the official 12.5-mile range in EV mode.

Electric-powered driving so far has accounted for one third of all miles driven in the PHEV demonstration.

EDF Energy charging infrastructure
A significant part of the programme has been EDF Energy’s installation of smart metered charging infrastructure at workplaces and a home location. Consumption data tied to driver, vehicle and charge point are captured through a keypad identification system to gain an in-depth insight into charging patterns and preferences and use of the charging infrastructure.

Initial results reveal different approaches to recharging across the vehicle operators taking part in the programme, with dedicated drivers recharging most frequently and therefore maximising the low carbon and cost mileage benefits.

The results of the trial have informed the development of EDF Energy’s latest recharging product, EcoRecharge. This features an intelligent timer to enable easy off-peak recharging, and a smart meter to provide customers with statements on their vehicle’s carbon and electricity consumption. EDF Energy’s low carbon charge point package means households with a plug-in vehicle can save money by receiving 20 per cent cheaper electricity during evenings and weekends with its Eco 20:20 tariff.

Executive comments
Jon Williams, Toyota GB Managing Director, said: “What we have witnessed so far in London, and in similar demonstrations across Europe, is hugely encouraging. It shows that Toyota’s plug-in hybrid electric technology has real value in the urban environment in reducing emissions and fuel consumption, while still giving drivers the freedom to cover much greater distances thanks to the full hybrid system. This bodes well for our anticipated market introduction of Prius Plug-in Hybrid from 2012.

“We are proud of our environmental leadership in developing new technologies to deliver sustainable mobility and we are confident that PHEV will further demonstrate the real-world benefits in low emissions and fuel efficiency that can be gained from hybrid, the core technology in our global strategy.”

Eric Salomon, Energy Field Services Director at EDF Energy, said: “This programme has provided valuable learning and insight into charging behaviour patterns and requirements for PHEVs. This real world test of fleet charging infrastructure has been fundamental to the development of EDF Energy’s recharging packages which meet the needs of our customers and deliver low carbon electricity for electric motoring.”

The London leasing demonstration is part of the Technology Strategy Board’s Ultra Low Carbon Vehicle Demonstrator Programme and benefits from funding support from the UK Government through the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV). Michael Hurwitz, OLEV Director, said, “As a country determined to be at the global forefront of ultra-low emission motoring, the UK values the demonstration of the Prius Plug-in Hybrid very highly. These interim results provide encouraging early insights into how this exciting technology is used in the real world, and future recharging requirements.

“We look forward to working closely with Toyota and EDF Energy as the ultra-low emission vehicles market grows and these vehicles become commonplace on our roads.”

End-user comments
Speaking on behalf of Transport for London, one of the organisations taking part in the demonstration programme, Mike Weston, Director of Operations said: “We are working hard to reduce the environmental impact of our support fleet and are currently using of a range of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles including the Prius Plug-in Hybrid. These vehicles help to reduce CO2 emissions and improve London’s air quality. With the launch of the Source London network of electric vehicle charge points I’m certain that even more drivers will also choose electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles.”

Conclusion
The on-going data collection continues to provide Toyota and EDF Energy with a great resource for learning more about the priorities and preferences of end users, both in terms of how they use their vehicle and their recharging requirements. Together with experience and information gained from other demonstrations in Europe, this will enable an effective strategy to be prepared for designing and marketing a full production PHEV and for shaping and introducing the most effective charging opportunities and infrastructure to promote low carbon energy usage.

There have been a lot of rumors recently that Toyota has intentions of giving its popular Prius its very own brand. Toyota executive have advised that there are no plans to do so.

The speculation is a result of Toyota’s intentions to release four Prius models next year, compared to the one model available in the U.S. now. What’s to come? The Prius V is a larger version of the of current model, the Prius C, which is a compact version, and a plug-in version of the Prius.

Despite the release of a whole line up of new Toyota Prius models, Toyota’s national marketing manager Ed Larocque, says that with Prius as their thrid best seller, only topped by the Camry and the Corolla, it is too important to the brand to let it go off on its own.

As the U.S.’s most successful hybrid, there is no surprise that Toyota would want to keep the car with its badge on it. With the negative stigma now attached to the Toyota name in lieu of recent events, the ever popular model defiantly helps the Toyota image overall.

Toyota Motor Company announced earlier this year of its efforts to expand the Prius family. So it’s no wonder that the Prius is predicted to become the company’s best seller, surpassing the high-volume sales of the Corolla and the Camry.

By the end of this year along with the usual five-door model that we’ve come to be very familiar with, there will be a plug-in variant, the new Prius V wagon and the compact Prius C.

“We could see Prius eventually leading Toyota sales in the U.S.,” said Ed Larocque, Toyota’s national marketing manager for advanced technology vehicles, “The Prius V will compete in multiple segments,” Larocque continued.

That said, the new Prius V has the potential of being the most economical in the classes that it competes in, mostly with the conventional compact crossovers with EPA ratings of 44mpg city and 40mpg highway.

Additionally, the plug-in variant that will be released early next year has peaked interest by indication of about 23,000 people.

“The U.S. market is unique,” said Larocque. “It’s the only market where we’ll have four Prius models.”

The Toyota Prius Plug-in hybrid will begin arriving at dealers in 15 launch states in spring of next year, with a nationwide roll-out in 2013. According to Nikkei business daily in Japan, Toyota plans on making plug-in technology standard in the Prius starting in 2014.

The Toyota Prius Plug-in hybrid is capable of driving about 13 miles on electric power alone at speeds up to 60 mph. It takes only three hours to fully charge on a 110 volt outlet, and only 1.7 hours on 220 volts. Once the battery is depleted, the Prius plug-in will go back to a standard hybrid powertrain, the same setup in the standard Prius.

Toyota opened the online registration process for the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid last month.

In October, Toyota said that cumulative sales of the Prius had reached 2 million units worldwide – a big punch in the face of many automakers that offer hybrids. The Japanese automaker is aiming to sell 1 million hybrid vehicles by 2015 on an annual basis.

On Jan. 10, the Prius Goes Plural voting campaign asked the public to help Toyota decided what the plural nomenclature of Prius should be. Well, the votes are in and the general public has selected ‘Prii’ as the preferred plural term for Prius.

“With 25 percent of the votes, Prii becomes the word not only endorsed by the public who chose it, but also as the term recognized by Toyota,” Toyota said in a statement. “As such, Dictionary.com has updated its entry for the word ‘Prius’ to reflect this.”

Over the course of the 6-week campaign, ‘Prii’ gathered more than 1.8 million votes. Prii ended up beating out four competitors including Prius, Priuses, Prium and Prien.

“Community has always been a big part of the Prius brand, so it was only fitting that we invite the online communities to participate in the plural discussion,” said Colin Morisako, advertising manager for Toyota. “The people have spoken—Prii will be the accepted term used to describe multiple Prius vehicles going forward.”
