So you’re in the market to purchase a new vehicle and are wondering which vehicles out their hold their value over time. ALG, a subsidiary of TrueCar, has released their 13th Annual Residual Value Awards and its seems like Subaru and Lexus take the award for top mainstream and luxury brands, respectively.

ALG honors vehicles in each segment that are expected to retain the highest percentage off their original MSRP after a 3-year period.

“Residual value is a great indicator of brand strength which in turn contributes to greater sales and profitability,” said Raj Sundaram for ALG. “We have seen a strong focus this year on producing high-quality products with great pricing and packaging delivering real value for vehicle buyers.”

This year’s list is based on 2012 model year vehicles and with the winners chosen after an evaluation of vehicle criteria, including segment competition, historical vehicle performance and industry trends.

“The consistently high quality of Subaru products, and the brand’s ability to remain progressive and practical in their redesigns, continue to draw fiercely loyal customers,” said Sundaram . “With high sales, Subaru consistently has low incentives and fleet sales, which have enhanced the brand’s used value and helped it hold on to the top spot among mainstream brands again this year.”

“Lexus has fully bounced back from its recent challenges, proving that it is one of the strongest brands,” said Sundaram. “The brand is extending its reach with exciting and affordable new models like the CT 200h, while continuing to provide great luxury and value across the lineup. Lexus’ reputation for value and customer service is also key to its dominance among luxury brands.”

Press Release:

Subaru Announces Pricing for 2011MY Legacy and Outback Models
– Starting price remains for best-selling Subaru Legacy –
– Record-breaking Subaru Outback price increase held to $200 –

CHERRY HILL, N.J., May 13 /PRNewswire/ — Subaru of America, Inc. today announced 2011MY pricing for its best-selling Legacy and Outback models. Launched in 2009, the Legacy® and Outback® have been key drivers in Subaru’s record sales success with Legacy showing an 87% increase in year-to-date sales and Outback sales more than doubling with a 128% increase year-to-date.

For 2011MY, both models receive equipment enhancements including manual-folding exterior mirrors. Also, models equipped with harman/kardon audio (available on Premium models and standard on Limited models) now feature XM® Satellite Radio and a three-month trial subscription.

A new color, Caramel Bronze Pearl, replaces Harvest Gold Metallic on both models and is paired with an Ivory interior. Ruby Red Pearl, previously only available on the Legacy and Tribeca, is now available on the Outback and comes also with an Ivory interior.

As with all Subaru vehicles, Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive is standard on both models, which helps driving performance by enhancing traction regardless of weather conditions.

2011 Subaru Legacy
Subaru maintains its focus on value, and for 2011MY, Legacy continues with a starting price of $19,995 for the 2.5i. The Legacy 2.5i Premium also remains unchanged at $20,995, and the starting price for the Legacy 3.6R holds at $24,995. Limited trim models are subject to a $300 price increase due to the inclusion of XM Satellite Radio. The Legacy 2.5i Limited is now $25,295 while the Legacy 3.6R Limited is $28,295.

For the 2011 model year, the Legacy 2.5GT sports sedan will be offered exclusively in Limited trim. It now includes a standard power moonroof as well as XM Satellite Radio, fog lights, new simulated carbon-fiber dashboard trim, silver contrast seat and armrest stitching, and aluminum pedals. It comes with a starting price of $31,395, an increase of only $405, which still keeps it priced well under most competitors’ offerings.

2011 Subaru Outback
The Subaru Outback, Motor Trend’s 2010 Sport/Utility of the Year, receives a modest $200 price increase with the Outback 2.5i now starting at $23,195 and the Outback 2.5i Premium priced at $24,495, still keeping the cost well under most mid-size crossover or wagon competitors.

A new feature for Outback models, a Rear Vision Camera, is added to Premium and Limited models – bundled with the Power Moonroof Package. The exclusive Rear Vision Camera includes an Auto-dim mirror with Homelink, compass display and a 3.3 inch hi-resolution display in the mirror. This convenience upgrade adds $450 to any Outback that features a Power Moonroof.

The Outback 2.5i Limited, with standard Lineartronic CVT, now starts at $28,495 while the six-cylinder Outback 3.6R is also competitively priced at $28,195. The Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited, which continues to be in high demand, now has a starting price of $31,495 and includes standard XM Satellite Radio.

Award-winning Products
The 2010 Subaru Legacy and Outback have recently received significant awards. Both vehicles were named 2010 Top Safety Picks by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and as ‘Bests’ in their class by Kiplinger’s Annual Buyers Guide. The Legacy was also named one of the ‘Best Family Cars of 2010′ by both Parents magazine and Edmunds.com.

The destination and delivery charge is $725 for all 2011MY Legacy and Outback models in the contiguous 48 states. The MSRP of 2.5i PZEV (Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle) models remains $300 more than the federal specification model.

Subaru says that it plans to increase production capacity at its Indiana plant by 40 percent this year to meet high demand for the Outback and Legacy. The move comes as owner Fuji Heavy Industries targets U.S. sales of 230,000 vehicles for 2010.

Subaru’s Lafayette, Indiana plant currently has the capacity for 100,000 vehicles annually, but the company wants to increase output to 140,000. Subaru did not say whether it would add a line, increase the speed of production or take capacity that it is currently allocating to Toyota’s Camry.

Subaru’s sales goal represents a 6 percent increase over the 216,652 vehicles it sold in 2009.

According to a report by Japan’s Nikkei Sangyo business daily, Subaru plans on offering continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) throughout its lineup to boost fuel-economy. However, the automaker launched CVT in its first big car with the Legacy last spring.

“We are thinking about it, but we don”t have an actual plan about which models,” said Masashi Uemura, a spokesman for Fuji Heavy Industries, the maker of Subaru brand cars.

The report by Nikkei Sangyo said that Subaru plans on offering CVT versions of all models within two years. It said that the Forrester and the Impreza are next to get the transmission.

Subaru says that the 2010 Subaru Legacy is the “roomiest Legacy sedan ever with new levels of comfort and refinement.” So we decided to test out the space with all five of our eGMCarTech team members covering the 2009 New York Auto Show. After sitting in it for a good 5 minutes and chatting about what we’ve seen at the show so far we have to say that Subaru is right – the Legacy sedan is roomier.

Obviously that’s because it’s 35 mm longer, 90 mm wider and 80 mm higher than the outgoing model.

The 2010 Subaru Legacy will be going on sale later this year with three different available trim-levels. The entry level model is a 170-hp 2.5i while the 2.5 GT gets 265-hp. The range-topping 3.6R is powered by a 3.6L producing 256-hp and a peak torque of 258 lb-ft.

Subaru Introduces All-New Legacy Sedan at New York International Auto Show

- Roomiest Legacy Sedan Ever with New Levels of Comfort and Refinement
- Legacy 2.5-Liter Naturally-Aspirated Models Feature Newly Developed Lineartronic™ CVT
Subaru Legacy sedan 2.5i Limited (U.S. specifications)

Tokyo, March 31, 2009 – Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), manufacturer of Subaru automobiles, today announced the unveiling of the all-new Legacy sedan (U.S. specifications) at the New York International Auto Show (press days on April 8 and 9, open to the public from April 10 through 19). The new sedan will be introduced in the U.S. market as the 2010 Legacy.

In the 20 years since the introduction of the first Legacy model, FHI has remained committed to enhancing both sporty handing and safety technology and has made significant improvements to this fifth-generation Legacy sedan. Featuring Subaru”s core technology, symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive (AWD), along with FHI”s original Horizontally-Opposed (BOXER) engine, the all-new Legacy sedan draws together superb driving performance and vital environmental considerations, while providing increased room and unparalleled comfort. The new Legacy sedan also features the new Subaru Lineartronic™ CVT (continuously variable transmission) and a new engine cradle design.

Larger midsize package for all occupants to enjoy

On an all-new platform, the new Legacy sedan offers roominess comparable to mainstream midsize sedans in the North American market that are built around comfort and space.
“¢ The new Legacy sedan is 35 mm longer, 90 mm wider and 80 mm higher than the previous model. While its overhang dimensions are shortened by 45 mm, its wheelbase is expanded by 80 mm, allowing for additional rear legroom.
“¢ The trunk is enlarged and offers larger volume than the previous model, while its opening is also wider and placed lower for easier access and utility. The trunk will accommodate four nine-inch golf bags.

Exterior design

Based on the design concept of Presence, the new Legacy embodies advances in the Legacy sedan styling, combining boldness and beautility into its sporty look.
“¢ Overall exterior design, accentuated by sharp edges and character lines, highlights the vigor of the new Legacy.
“¢ Prominently projected wheel arches express the power running through the Symmetrical AWD system, enhancing the presence of the Legacy.
“¢ A distinctive wing-shape embellishment on the front grille shows the Subaru brand identity, and the front bumper designs accentuate flat horizontal surfaces. Embellished with solidly-designed headlamps, the front face of the Legacy makes a bold, powerful statement.
“¢ The cabin with dynamic design and a shorter deck give the vehicle a sporty appeal, while volume and power of the vehicle are expressed in the rear-end design, rounded and capacious and framed by the combination lights.
“¢ Moldings around the windows accentuate the sleek design of cabin area with a quality feel.

Interior designs

For interior design development, Subaru focused on the key words, Active and Quality Feeling. A new interior design echoes the dynamic exterior lines and shapes and creates a more spacious cabin.
“¢ The new instrument panel, accentuated by sharp edges, creates the impression of more laterally-opened space in the front
“¢ A sense of powerful presence and fine quality is expressed in the center console shapes and in the decorative hairline finish on the surfaces of the console.
“¢ The incorporation of a new electronic parking brake eliminates the need for a side break lever and creates more space for the center console. The center console features two cup holders arranged side by side, and the console box and arm rest are enlarged to provide more inside storage space.
“¢ Both front seats excel in comfort and support, and their stitched fabric emphasizes the Legacy”s sporty look. A 10-way driver”s seat, with power lumber support adjustment, and 4-way power front passenger seat are available on premium-grade models.
“¢ A newly-designed 3-spoke steering wheel provides a sporty feeling and comes with audio and cruise control buttons. Steering wheel paddle shifters are featured on models with automatic transmissions and Lineartronic™ CVT.
“¢ The four dials on the instrument panel are outlined with aluminum-steam-plated meter rings, and, for immediate reading, their illuminated backgrounds are always on. A multi-information display with average-MPG indicator is located in the center of the dashboard.

Engine and transmission
The new Legacy sedan is powered by improved Boxer engines that provide outstanding fuel economy. Three engine types are available in the U.S. market.

Legacy 2.5i
Engine displacement: 2,457cc
Max. output/ max. torque: 170 hp@ 5,600rpm/ 170 lb-ft.@ 4,000rpm
Transmission: 6-speed manual / Lineartronic™ CVT

Legacy 2.5GT
Engine displacement: 2,457cc
Max. output/ max. torque: 265 hp@ 5,600rpm/ 258 lb-ft.@2,000- 5,200rpm
Transmission: 6-speed manual

Legacy 3.6R
Engine displacement: 3,630cc
Max. output/ max. torque: 256 hp@ 6,000rpm/ 247 lb-ft.@ 4,400rpm
Transmission: 5-speed automatic

2.5-liter SOHC engine
“¢ Employing a resin-based intake manifold, the engine is now lighter in weight and improves low speed range torque. Additionally, better fuel economy is achieved through engine cooling
performance improvement in an engine head. Optimizing the specifications of its catalyst, the engine offers outstanding exhaust gas control.

2.5-liter DOHC Turbo engine
“¢ Design changes in the turbocharger have raised performance and lowered emission levels.
“¢ Peak torque is generated at levels as low as 2,000 rpm, and sustained smoothly at higher rpm ranges.
“¢ The turbocharger unit is placed directly under the forward part of the crankshaft. This layout shortens the distance that exhaust gas must travel, increases response with smoother turbocharging and improves filtering of emissions. It also helps to lower the vehicle”s center gravity, which results in more efficient weight distribution.

3.6-liter DOHC engine
“¢ Featuring the same external dimensions as the earlier 3.0-liter engine, the new 3.6-liter engine is compact and lightweight.
“¢ The Active Valve Control System (AVCS), which incorporates variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust valves, optimizes power delivery across the engine”s speed range while helping to reduce emissions. Not only does the 3.6 engine offer greater performance than the previous 3.0-liter unit, but it does so economically by using regular grade fuel. The 3.0-liter engine required premium grade.

The Subaru Lineartronic™ CVT (continuously variable transmission) offers superb driveability and fuel economy.

Lineartronic™ CVT
“¢ The 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated engine model is equipped with a chain-type CVT, the world”s first* longitudinally mounted CVT system for AWD production vehicles. (*Claim based on Subaru research.)
“¢ Chain-type CVTs boast higher torque delivery capacity and lower friction, helping provide better fuel efficiency than belt-type CVTs. The Lineartronic™ CVT employs smaller pulley cores, which makes the unit compact. And due to the significant size difference between the smallest and largest pulley core diameters, the CVT provides infinite variability between the highest and lowest available ratios, helping to keep the engine operating in its most efficient range.
“¢ With a perfect balance of torque delivery and engine revolutions, the Lineartronic™ CVT provides smooth acceleration with a linear feeling in response to the accelerator pedal.
“¢ The manual mode of the Lineartronic™ CVT, which a driver can choose to engage, uses six pre-selected steps that allow the driver to “shift” manually using steering wheel paddle controls. The shift response is always quick and smooth, comparable to the conventional sports AT models.

Five-speed AT
“¢ Fuel economy is improved through the reduction of friction and weight in the AT unit.

Six-speed MT
“¢ For the first time in the U.S. market, the six-speed manual transmission is offered with the 2.5-liter non-turbo Legacy model. The new 6MT provides excellent fuel economy and improved driveability, as well as quieter rides in high-speed ranges, thanks to its wider ratio coverage.
“¢ The compact design of the modified 6-speed transmission for turbo engine models is made possible by optimizing the gear layout. This unit is also more than 25 kg lighter than the previous unit.

Chassis

A new engine cradle design not only helps reduce noise and provides more refined ride and stability but also improves front impact safety.
“¢ The engine is mounted to the cradle frame, no longer installed on the chassis. The cradle system supports the engine on four mounts that utilize cushioning rubber filled with liquid material. By situating the engine in precise relation to the torque roll axis of the power unit, the cradle system helps reduce vibration. In addition, the cradle layout allows the turbocharger to be placed under the engine, which also helps reduce emissions.
“¢ The MacPherson-type strut front suspension is mounted to the new engine cradle, further improving steering response and handling and adding to overall rigidity. By changing the layout of the stabilizers with increased diameter, roll rigidity is enhanced. This keeps the stroke in line and improves ride comfort.
“¢ A new double-wishbone rear suspension is mounted to the sub frame. All suspension links and the rear differential are also mounted to the sub frame via bushes, while the link bushes and shock absorber mounts are optimized to suit the new Legacy. Those enhancements have significantly lowered overall noise levels.
“¢ The 2.5-liter models feature standard 16-in. wheels, in optional aluminum alloy, and 205/60R16 tires. Premium-grade models are fitted with 17-in. alloy wheels with 215/50R17 tires. And the 2.5 turbo models are richly furnished with 18-in. alloy wheels with 225/45R18 tires. On the Legacy 3.6-liter models, 17-in. alloy wheels with 225/50R17 tires are standard.
“¢ All models are equipped with a standard 4-wheel disc Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), which is augmented by Subaru”s Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). Further control is offered by Subaru”s Brake Assist safety system, which is available on all models.
“¢ A new electronic parking brake eliminates the traditional parking brake handle and allows for more storage space in the center console. An electronic Hill Holder System in the parking brake is automatically activated if the vehicle stops on any hill with a slope of more than 5%.
“¢ Also standard on all models is Subaru”s exclusive Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system, which further enhances stability and traction control capacity by optimizing the control time.

Body construction

“¢ Use of high-tensile steel in critical body parts contributes to weight reduction and higher overall rigidity. The engine cradle design enables more efficient impact absorption, while keeping the body dimensions and weight virtually unchanged from the previous model.
“¢ The hood and trunk lid are fitted with gas springs for greater ease of operation.

Safety

“¢ In the event of front impact, the engine cradle frame folds inward and causes the power unit to slide downward, thus creating greater zone of protection for the cabin space. In combination with Subaru”s Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frame safety structure, which is designed for efficient absorption of impact, front impact safety has been significantly improved.
“¢ Two impact beams have been added in each of the front and rear doors. With an optimized layout of its inner components, the door provides enough crushable space between its panels to afford another level of protection to the vehicle’s occupants.
“¢ Despite a shorter overhang, energy produced on rear impact is effectively absorbed through optimized frame construction.
“¢ All models feature front seat side impact air bags and side curtain air bags that insure additional head protection for front and rear occupants. Intelligent dual-stage deployment front air bags use sensors to detect both the presence and weight of the front passenger and the driver”s distance from the steering wheel. And for optimal protection of occupants, the system determines deployment strength of front air bags. The side airbags and curtain airbags are enlarged to further enhance passenger protection.
“¢ Newly designed high-strength front seat frames and energy-absorbing headrests provide enhanced protection against whiplash injury in a rear-end collision.

Other equipment

“¢ Headlights are governed by an automatic lights-on and -off function that responds to specific driving situations.
“¢ A 60/40 split fold-down rear seat creates a wider passage to the truck compartment.
“¢ A cup holder inside the rear seat armrest comes standard.
“¢ Premium grade models offer additional comfort and convenience options, including a Harman-Kardon® audio system and a power moonroof with a tilt-up and slide mechanism.

Major Specifications:

Body Styles 4-door, 5-passenger
Body Size (length/width/height) 4,735 X 1,820 X 1,505 mm
Wheel Base 2,750 mm

After showing us a teaser last month, Subaru today took the covers off of its new 2009 Subaru Legacy Concept which it says hints at the future Legacy design language. The future Legacy may be slightly roomier since the design concept sits on a larger 108.3-in. wheelbase that will comfortably accommodate 4-adults. Power comes from a 3.6L Boxer engine coupled with Subaru’s All-Wheel Drive system.

Besides the aggressive front fascia and the expressive body, the interior features a 4-seat layout that showcases what Subaru calls the “High Definition” design theme. A large touch-screen is at the center console and controls various functions of the car. Steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters also hint at new options on the future Legacy model. The Subaru Legacy concept also features a in-car entertainment system with monitors fitted in the rear of the front seat headrests.

Don’t expect features like the monitor for the Side Rear Vision Camera to make it into production.

Press Release:

All-New 2009 Subaru LEGACY CONCEPT Debuts at the 2009 North American International Auto Show

DETROIT, Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ — Subaru of America, Inc. revealed the 2009 Subaru LEGACY CONCEPT today at the 2009 North American International Auto Show. The new LEGACY CONCEPT is a hint at the future of Legacy design. The design showcases the sport sedan heritage of the Subaru Legacy, but in more modern and purposeful package.

Marking the 20th anniversary of the Subaru Legacy, the LEGACY CONCEPT has been developed to showcase the Legacy’s sporting capabilities and features Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system mated to a Horizontally-Opposed Boxer engine. The design concept is based on a larger 108.3 in. wheelbase designed to maximize interior space and provide comfortable accommodations for four adults.

The theme of concept design is “Presence”, represented by the aggressive front facia and solid yet expressive body. Four powerful and defined wheel arches emphasize the dynamism of Symmetrical AWD. Sharp design lines carve out a substantial mass as they flow from the hood, across the roof to the trunk, while the sharp body lines project a sense of strength. Wedge-shaped Side Rear Vision Cameras are featured and provide a sense of flow from the momentum of the A-pillar lines. A character line runs from just before the A-pillar and sweeps up to the tail just above the taillamps.

This grille design incorporates a central wing motif that defines the Legacy’s Subaru brand identity. The Subaru logo separates a deep central grille shape that is accented by sharp headlamps with a dual vertical-row layout of multiple LED lamps. In addition, the slim, vertical fog lamps set in a large front valance with angular air intakes add a jewel-like touch to the front design. The LEGACY CONCEPT is finished in a special high-luster “Ultimate Silver” paint to accentuate the design’s angular shapes.

The interior design features a striking four-seat layout that showcases the “High Definition” design theme. Comfort and style are achieved with a mix of touch-screens, cameras and modern surface coverings. The high-tech look blends with comfort through four separate seating areas, a high roofline and generous legroom for all passengers. The center console features a large touch-panel display that concentrates various functions for simplified use, while the flowing shape extends vertically to emphasize the feeling of strength and solidity in union with the exterior. A steering wheel and shift lever have been adapted to accentuate the sporty nature elemental in the Legacy’s DNA.

In-car entertainment is featured through monitors with multiple functions that are located in the center console, as well as in the rear of the front seat headrests to provide comfortable functionality as well a calm design that creates a relaxed ambiance for passengers. The monitor for the Side Rear Vision Camera has been situated toward the front of the roof to maximize rear visibility. The design is capped off with seats covered in pearl white leather that give off a blue sheen, while black metallic leather has been used for the door trim to create contrast with the instrument panel.

The Legacy was introduced globally in 1989, produced in Japan and Lafayette, Indiana. Since that date until November 2008, the total global production has exceeded 3.6 million vehicles making it Subaru’s core model. During that period, Subaru’s core technologies of a Horizontally-Opposed engine and Symmetrical AWD have served to further the basic elements of automotive performance while continuously evolving for unparalleled handling, stability, and safety. This LEGACY CONCEPT incorporates the Legacy heritage while also serving as a concept model that provides an image of the new driving comfort and reliability that will continue to serve as a touchstone for Subaru.
