At the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, BMW Group’s Mini brand revealed the Mini Coupe and Mini Roadster concepts. Both models are expected to enter production and hit the roads by early 2011. We also know that the much-anticipated Mini Countryman Crossover will debut in the first part of 2010 with European and U.S. sales to begin later that spring.

But there is a lot more coming out of the Mini pipeline and Mini enthusiast site MotoringFile has all the details.

During sometime in 2010, Mini will unveil the Moke Concept, a model that will feature a stripped down interior and exterior. Think of a smaller four door Jeep Wrangler and you’ll have an idea of what it’s about. Following that we’ll see a Mini MPV Concept, which MotoringFile says is an “R60 derived four door GTI type of vehicle.”

Mini is also planning something called the Vision Concept. Details are a bit hazy at the moment but sources say that it will involve BMW’s Project i technology (EVs and plug-in hybrids).

Also, in four years, Mini will to roll out a new replacement for the R56. As of right now, keep an eye our for the Countryman and the Mini Coupe and Roadster.

If you’re one of the 900 Tesla Roadster owners out there you have to live with a very hard choice – you can either drive efficiently and show off how many miles you traveled on a single charge or you can throw the efficiency part out of the window and show off how you can go from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds.

Owner Simon Hackett decided to go with the first when he drove a total of 313 miles in his Tesla Roadster with his co-driver Emilis Prelgauskas during the 10th annual Global Green Challenge in Australia. The distance appears to have set a new record for a production electric-vehicle.

At the end of their trip from Alice Springs to Coober Pedy, Hackett’s Tesla still had 3 miles left on the charge.

Check out the press release after the jump for more details.

Press Release:

Tesla Roadster Travels 313 Miles on a Single Charge

Competing in Australia’s Global Green Challenge, Customer Simon Hackett’s red Roadster goes from Alice Springs to Coober Pedy with 3 miles left on the charge.

Coober Pedy, South Australia - (Oct. 27, 2009) – Tesla Roadster owner Simon Hackett and co-driver Emilis Prelgauskas completed 313 miles (501 km) in a Tesla Roadster on a single charge – a distance that appears to set a new record for a production electric vehicle.

Hackett and Prelgauskas are driving Hackett’s red 2008 Roadster as part of the 10th annual Global Green Challenge, one of the most high-profile rallies worldwide for production, prototype and experimental cars. Hackett is providing updates in real time on his blog.

The pair drove from Alice Springs, in the Australian Northern Territory, to the finish marker at a point 183 km north of Coober Pedy, in South Australia.

The previous distance record for an electric vehicle was set in April, when another Roadster was the only vehicle to complete the entire, 241-mile Rallye Monte Carlo d’Energies Alternatives. It had an estimated 38 miles left on the charge.

The Tesla Roadster is the first production automobile to use lithium-ion battery cells and the first production EV with a range greater than 200 miles (320 km) per charge. Tesla has delivered about 900 Roadsters to customers so far.

Hackett sent Tesla the following note before going to bed last night:

“Emilis and I have decades of experience flying gliders competitively and we applied the same energy conservation techniques to our driving, with significant results! The car had about 3 miles of range left when the drive was completed. We travelled 501km on a single charge. Let that sink in for a minute.

“The security seal was applied to the charge port door when we started the journey. As this is being done as part of the Global Green Challenge, we have a full set of official verifiers here who will attest to the results and to achieving the outcome. We were followed along the journey by our support crew and a documentary film crew – so we have it on film.

“It’s late here and we have another 541k to drive (with an intermediate charge stop) tomorrow – and another two days of the event left after that. When we’re done, we will have driven over 3000 km’s in the Roadster over the course of only six days, from Darwin to Adelaide.”

Press Release:

The Veritas RS III. A dream sports car goes into production.

The premium manufacturer in Grafschaft-Gelsdorf has only 15 employees. However, with this staff, the company has successfully built a special type of super sports car.

The facts: V10 cylinder, 507 hp, 347 km/h and a breathtaking design – any other questions? Maybe the price?

Veritas RS III goes into series production

Grafschaft-Gelsdorf. The Veritas RS III Roadster super sports car, which has been presented to the public as a prototype over the past year and which immediately won the public award of “Best Super Car 2009″ at London’s Salon Privé, is now going into series production. However, the words “series production” are not entirely true. Firstly, the series comprises a strictly limited batch of only 30 vehicles and secondly, every single vehicle will undergo sophisticated hand production by manufacturer Vermot AG in Gelsdorf.

Even before the actual start of production, five of the 30 luxury cars have already been sold – to Monaco, Australia, Great Britain, Spain and Switzerland. Eight more are reserved and over 100 enquiries have been received. In Gelsdorf, it is therefore expected that the entire edition will have sold out even before the end of the year.

The manufacturer’s 15 staff install the chassis, bodywork and interior at three workstations. The production of one of the classic 1+1-seaters – with a covered passenger seat that can be opened if required – takes eight weeks, although three cars are built in parallel at one time. Production runs according to the strictest “Made in Germany” quality standards. Furthermore, the vehicles are fully homologated to EU standard. Delivery to the customers will start in January 2010.

An exceptional design concept
“Even at first sight, the Veritas RS III convinces customers with a design that combines futuristic and classical elements and thereby produces an unmistakable overall impression,” says Vermot AG chief designer Michael Söhngen. “In the end, what counts for the design of a good sports car are the proportions and we have placed great emphasis on these,” Söhngen continues. The typical shark’s mouth and aggressive looking Xenon twin headlights, tapered inward-contoured side sills, and the flat tail with the two central stainless steel tailpipes pointing upward contrast with the asymmetric roll bar integrated into the bodywork on the driver’s side. A rear-view mirror extending into the centre of the vehicle, riveted or chrome-plated bodywork elements, and the distinctive jagged taillights emphasise the exceptional design concept.

The Dunlop tyres – 325/25 at the rear and 255/30 at the front – and the 12.5 and 10.5 inch wide, 22-inch, five-point star, drop centre rims – as well as the extremely low vehicle height of only 97 cm – ensure a firm hold on the road. All this comes with a height-adjustable special sports chassis tested on the north loop of the Nürburgring, as lovers of this untamed bolide generally appreciate that “true race feeling”. Slightly more cautious drivers can, however, engage ABS and TCS.

The technical specifications are a testament to the high demands. The new Veritas, of which the legendary predecessors celebrated numerous racing successes in the 50s and were the first German team to take part in Formula I, now accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in under 3.2 seconds – this alone will make the hearts of automobile enthusiasts beat faster.

The 4.68 metre long and 2.02 metre wide monster, which has already made a splash in Monte Carlo, in Spa, and on the “ring” is powered by a 5.0 litre V10 BMW engine with 7-speed SMG transmission or – optionally – with manual 6-speed transmission. With an engine speed of 7,500 rpm and a power-weight ratio of 2.9 kg/kW, the RS III achieves a top performance of 373 kW (507 hp) and thus a top speed of 347 km/h.

The complete bodywork comprises an ultra-light carbon racing skin and is produced in a Formula I forge. In addition to the 4-point H-type seatbelts, a tube frame developed by the Vermot AG engineers guarantees occupants the highest level of passive safety on their modified Recaro full bucket seats. A new braking system from Brabham Racing provides for deceleration: six 380 mm pistons at the front and four 355 mm pistons at the back forcefully slow the entire weight before the ceramic disk brakes abruptly bring the wheels to a standstill – until the next kick start.

Extensive test drives were conducted a few days ago at the legendary Brands Hatch racetrack in Great Britain. “It is now about constantly improving the car and finding the optimum fine tuning. Brands Hatch was a complete success and we are very happy with the result,” says Vermot AG CEO Michael Trick. Initial customer test drives have also been conducted in the context of the track days – an illustrious rendezvous of customers and potential buyers, who have met on the racetrack in England and showed themselves to be thoroughly impressed.

The Audi R4 is one model that we’ve heard a lot about from European media outlets, but nothing has ever been confirmed by Audi itself. Last we heard anything about the R4 it was reported that the model will be based on the Volkswagen Concept BlueSport that was unveiled at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

According to a new report by AutoExpress, the R4 will be the production version of the e-tron concept, which was revealed at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show last month. Audi’s American president, Johan de Nysschen, recently confirmed that the e-tron concept will enter production with prototypes to hit the roads within 24 months.

The UK publication said that the R4 is also likely to spawn petrol-engine versions with up to 300-hp for those of you that don’t care about going ‘green.’

Known internally as the UKL1 (Untere Kompaktklasse), the 0-Series will be a direct competitor to the Audi A1 and the Mercedes-Benz A-Class. Engine choices will include a new 3 and 4-cylinder engine.

BMW will offer at least three different body styles including a three-door hatchback, a five-door hatchback and a two-seat roadster. Production is expected to take place at BMW’s Oxford plant.

Mazda is still celebrating its 20th Anniversary of the Mazda Roadster (known to us as the beloved Mazda MX-5). The Japanese automaker hosted a special commemorative event on Sept. 20 at Miyoshi Proving Ground with over 1,600 MX-5s and their owners as they made their way to the car’s birthplace.

“Approximately 2,600 owners and fans had journeyed from all over Japan and overseas to join in the celebration,” Mazda said. “The event was officially launched with a toast from a 20-year old Roadster owner, who had been born the same year as the iconic vehicle was launched.”

The event ended with all 1,600 MX-5s formed up to parade around the track before leaving the Miyoshi Proving Ground.

As reported earlier this week, Mercedes-Benz is working on a convertible version of the SLS AMG due out mid-2011. The folks at Auto Motor und Sport managed to catch a prototype testing near their headquarters. Check out the video after the jump.

Refresher: Power comes from a 6.2L V8 making 563-hp with a maximum torque of 479 lb-ft of torque. Mated to an E-SELECT system that controls the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission, the SLS AMG can go from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.7 seconds (with the Race Start launch control system) with a top speed of 196 mph.

Porsche has threatened to pull its existing contract with Magna to build the next-generation Boxster and Cayman in Austria starting in 2013. The Stuttgart automaker said that it may instead move production to Karmann in Germany. The move comes as Porsche aims to guard its engineering and production cost secrets for its upcoming roadster and coupe.

Insiders said that the plans to build the Boxster and Cayman in Austria are being heavily reviewed following Magna’s bid to take control of General Motors Opel brand.

At the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn said that the German automaker, which is in the process of purchasing 49 percent of Porsche, may be forced to look for new engineering partners if Magna’s bid to buy Opel is successful.

BMW officials said that they are also studying whether “plans to build the Mini Crossover at Magna could be advantageous to Opel.”

As you can see by our last couple of posts, we’ve saved the best for last.

One of the most exclusive cars in the world has just gotten a little more exclusive and a little sexier. Meet the convertible version of the Lamborghini Reventon – the Reventon Roadster. We’re guessing the Reventon Roadster will sell out in less than a month, if it hasn’t already.

Lamborghini says it will produce less than 20 units of the Reventon Roadster – many of which we think will surprisingly end up in Dubai.

- Production Possibility: None. Apparently, Mazda was just having fun.

If Mazda has no plans to offer a production version of the Mazda MX-5 Superlight Concept, than what’s the purpose of showing it at a major auto show like Frankfurt? To showcase weight-saving and fuel-efficient technologies of course.

The main focus of Mazda’s European R&D when building the Mazda MX-5 Superlight Concept was to keep the total curb weight under 1,000 kg (2,204 lbs). Performance wise this drivable concept vehicle isn’t anything special. Power comes from a 1.8L 4-cylinder making 126-hp allowing you to go from 0 to 62 mph in 8.9 seconds.

However, Mazda says that fuel-economy of the MX-5 Superlight Concept is estimated at 37 mpg. Let’s move on…

- Key Competitors: Mazda MX-5 Roadster, Honda S2000, Nissan 370Z.
- Engine: Mini Coupe Concept is designed to fit a 1.6L twin-scroll turbocharged 4-cylinder with 208-hp/192 lb-ft of torque. Mini Roadster Concept is designed to fit a 1.6L twin-scroll turbocharged 4-cylinder with 175-hp/177 lb-ft of torque.
- Performance: Figures not available.
- Will it enter production? Yes, with the same feet; same legs; same belly; same breasts… but…

Making their world debut today at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Mini Coupe Concept and the Mini Roadster Concept are known as the Oxford Twins. Why? Because both models will enter production on the same platform at Mini’s Oxford Plant. Both models are expected to hit the roads in early 2011.

The production Mini Coupe will be powered by a 1.6L 4-cylinder twin-scroll turbocharged engine, carried over from the MINI John Cooper Works, making 208-hp and a peak torque of 192 lb-ft – increasing briefly under Overboost to 207 lb-ft.

As for the production Mini Roadster, Mini says that the model “might possibly” be powered by the 1.6L 4-cylinder twin-scroll turbocharged engine already featured in the MINI Cooper S. The engine makes a total of 175-hp and a maximum torque of 177 lb-ft – increasing briefly with the Overboost to 192 lb-ft.

Press Release:

Two unique characters, one common presentation: the Oxford Twins at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.
Celebrating their world debuts at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the MINI Coupé Concept and the MINI Roadster Concept are making a clear statement together as the Oxford Twins. This special characterization of the two new models obviously refers to the production plant of the current MINI in Great Britain where, at MINI Plant Oxford so full of tradition, more than 1.5 million units of the only premium model in the small car segment have been built since production started in 2001.

The MINI Coupé Concept and the MINI Roadster Concept are based on a platform specially conceived for integrated production at MINI Plant Oxford. Indeed, this again underlines the particular identity of the two concept models, each of which stands out through its innovative character and, at the same time, offers one asset in particular: the uniqueness of a genuine MINI.

MINI Coupé Concept: a vision of concentrated driving pleasure.
The MINI Coupé Concept brings together a wide range of features for a truly sporting and ambitious style of motoring. Intentionally limiting the passenger compartment to two seats and focusing on consistent lightweight construction, the very concept of this unique car specifically addresses the demands made of a particularly dynamic and active coupé. At the same time the low roofline, a precisely defined spoiler at the rear, and further aerodynamically optimized features all serve to improve both the performance and the efficiency of the car. Both in its design and in the opportunities to use a truly powerful engine, the MINI Coupé Concept sets the ideal foundation for a compact sports car in the premium segment.

This two-seater study is conceived from the start also for the most powerful engine currently available in a MINI: Featuring the 1.6-liter twin-scroll turbocharged engine carried over from the MINI ¬John Cooper Works, the concept car is able to offer supreme performance in every respect. This four-cylinder delivers maximum output of 208 hp and peak torque of 192 lb-ft increasing briefly under Overboost to an even more significant 207 lb-ft.

Exterior design: typical MINI look with individual character.
In its body design, the MINI Coupé Concept spans the entire range from the beginnings of the MINI’s history far into the future of the brand, highlighting both the unique looks of the concept and its membership in the MINI family. Through its individual and emotional design language alone, the MINI Coupé Concept also promises a particularly impressive driving experience.

This unique two-seater measures 3,714 millimeters/146.2″ in length and 1,683 millimeters/66.3″ in width. The height of the car is 1,356 millimeters/53.4″. Through these dimensions and its athletic proportions alone, the MINI Coupé Concept at very first sight stands out as a truly compact and powerful performer for all occasions.

The unmistakable look of the front end comes straight from the four-seater MINI, well-balanced contours with large radii on the engine compartment lid, the large headlights, the homogeneous sweep of the radiator grille and the extra-wide air scoop at the bottom offering the mimicry typical of every model in the range, full of openness and sporting appeal.

The radiator grille and engine compartment lid on the MINI Coupé Concept are the same as on the MINI ¬Cooper S. The inner section of the grille -nevertheless comes with trim bars in body color clearly distinguishing the car from all other models in the MINI family. The bonnet stripes also continue into the radiator grille, providing an additional sporting touch.

Through its lower and even more streamlined windscreen, the MINI Coupé Concept shows its striking character and unique look from the very beginning also from this perspective.

The front side panels on the concept car come straight from the MINI -Convertible. Similarly, the diagonal body joint between the engine compartment lid and the surrounds of the side direction indicators reflecting the style of the MINI Cooper S and characteristic of every MINI offers a unique sign of distinction.

The well-known look of these design features forms a stylish contrast to the far lower rake of the A-pillar leading into a completely different and very innovative roofline. The glazed section of the passenger cell referred to as the greenhouse is far lower and more slender on this new model than on the regular models in the range. The MINI Coupé Concept features a low and dynamic windscreen merging softly and gently into the roof, while at the rear the roofline initially moving back above the heads of the driver and passenger in a straight line tapers out into a sturdy and muscular C-pillar.

Throughout the entire car, the roof contours show an unmistakable bridge design feature to be admired for the first time on a MINI, made up of a stable cornerstone formed by the C-pillars and the more filigree structure above the passenger cell. At the same time the side view of the MINI Coupé Concept shows a clear-cut wedge shape as if the car were constantly pushing ahead with all its muscle and power.

The rear-end design of the MINI Coupé Concept seeks to optimize the flow of air essential in terms of both driving dynamics and the efficiency of this unique two-seater. The rear spoiler with its wing profile fitted at the same level as the C-pillars makes a particularly significant contribution to the smooth flow of air at the rear of the MINI Coupé Concept and, at the same time, stands out as a genuine optical highlight. The rear window of this two-seater elegantly tapering out to the bottom of the car merges in typical coupé style into a short and low rear end with just a hint of a notchback. Again, this particular design follows the overriding objective to ensure an optimum flow of air without any turbulence or swirl possibly harming the car’s aerodynamic qualities. The spoiler right at the back of the car comes with appropriately sharp and clear-cut contours.

Impressively functional: tailgate opening up wide, lots of luggage space.
A further highlight is the special construction of the tailgate on the MINI Coupé Concept. Intentionally doing without a rear seat bench, the body of this two-seater obviously offers additional space for all kinds of luggage. Luggage capacity, therefore, is no less than 250 liters or 8.8 cu ft.

To make optimum use of this potential, the MINI Coupé Concept comes at the rear with a large and wide-opening tailgate. Pivoting above the roof spoiler, the tailgate swings high up together with the rear window, offering convenient access to the extra-large luggage compartment behind the seats of the car. The bulkhead between the passenger and the luggage compartments, in turn, comes with a lockable opening.

The color scheme and the choice of materials within the MINI Coupé Concept clearly symbolize the classic sportiness and unique character of the car. Like the instrument panel, the roof lining of this unique two-seater comes in black providing a calm ambience and helping the driver to concentrate on the actual driving experience. Black trim bars in conjunction with a carbon interior trim help to additionally enhance the purist look of the car.

MINI Roadster Concept: fresh ideas for an intense driving experience.
Presenting the MINI Roadster Concept, the brand once again sets a new trend for individual mobility. This is where a purist character, elegant design and fascinating driving qualities come together in the vision of an open two-seater meeting the demands of a modern and self-confident target group. Individual style, premium quality and exactly the right balance of driving pleasure and efficiency in our modern day and age give the MINI Roadster Concept its very special character, the design of the car clearly reflecting this focus on maximum driving pleasure with nothing but the sky above.

Spontaneous pleasure – the domain of the MINI Roadster Concept.
The MINI Roadster Concept offers ideal conditions for an emotional experience also on short trips, at the same time urging the connoisseur and aficionado to escape the usual congestion of city traffic.

With its intentional restriction to two seats and lightweight construction, the car from the start expresses its focus on uncompromising agility. Its stylish looks and high-class interior ambience, in turn, give this very special two-seater truly exclusive character.

Exterior design: unique proportions, expression typical of MINI.

The body design of the MINI Roadster Concept visualizes the identity of the brand and its innovative power in a truly fascinating combination. The integrating factor throughout is the design language so typical of MINI, determining both the elements characteristic of the brand and the car’s innovative features. In its design the MINI Roadster Concept is refreshingly different, but nevertheless absolutely harmonious and perfectly balanced in its look so reminiscent of MINI. In a truly incomparable manner, therefore, the MINI design of this concept car offers an extroverted look in style and with genuine class.

This new two-seater measures 3,714 millimeters/146.2″ in length and 1,683 millimeters/66.3″ in width. The height of the car is 1,356 millimeters/53.4″.

Again in typical MINI style, the MINI Roadster Concept comes with extra-short body overhangs front and rear emphasizing the athletic stature of the car and alluding even at a standstill to the unique handling of the MINI Roadster Concept characterized by thrilling agility and that typical feeling of go-kart motoring. The front section including the large headlights and the hexagon radiator grille is the same as on the MINI Cooper S up to the A-pillars. The entire front air dam, in turn, has been adjusted to the sporting look of the car and appears to be even wider and more striking than before. The inner area within the chrome radiator grille comes with louvers in body color, while the bonnet stripes extending all the way into the radiator grille add a sporting touch and provide clear optical differentiation on the MINI Roadster Concept.

The low, short and dynamically raked A-pillars merge gently into the roofline of the car as long as the roof is closed. The glazed area in the passenger cell is significantly lower, slimmer and even more dynamic than on the regular production models, providing a strikingly sleek silhouette for an even more sporting and performance-oriented look.
The typical roadster character of the concept car comes out clearly when both open and closed, the waistline rising up slightly towards the rear in a linear perspective also maintained with the roof open.

The pure and open character of the car is of course most obvious and appealing with the roof down. Folding down in a compact configuration, the roof leads on to a short luggage compartment lid housing the luggage compartment separated from the passenger compartment.

The passenger compartment limited to two seats is covered – whenever required on account of wind and weather – by a high-quality soft top with the smallest possible dimensions.

With the roof closed, on the other hand, the MINI Roadster stands out clearly from the MINI Convertible through its notchback contour. The soft top opens and closes manually in a process performed very quickly and with utmost ease thanks to the compact dimensions of the roof.

Innovations in typical MINI style: rear-end design, luggage compartment and safety concept.
The rear view of the car is characterized by innovative design features clearly originating from the design language so typical of MINI. The side panels, the rear apron and the luggage compartment lid flow together to form a harmoniously configured sculpture not only boasting that cascading style so typical of the brand, but also taking up elements of the front-end design re-interpreted here in a new and unique manner.

Increasing in width step-by-step from top to bottom, the rear structure of the car gives the MINI Roadster Concept a particularly powerful stance on the road also from this perspective.
Beneath the short rear end of this compact car so typical of a roadster in its style, the MINI Roadster Concept offers a luggage compartment unusually large and generous for a vehicle in this segment. And since the soft top of the MINI Roadster Concept moves down directly behind the seats, luggage capacity remains exactly the same with the roof both open and closed.

Another feature of modern function quite unique in a compact roadster is the through-loading from the luggage compartment to the passenger compartment, with the bulkhead featuring a lockable opening between the two sections.

The rollbar instantaneously moving up whenever required and featured for the first time on the MINI Convertible is an important highlight of the safety concept ensured from the start in developing this unique car. The single-piece aluminum bar covering the entire width of the interior and moving up whenever required under electromechanical power within 150 milliseconds interacts with the reinforced windscreen frame as an essential element of maximum occupant safety on the passenger cell.

The outstanding character of this two-seater comes out not only in the harmonious design of the exterior so typical of the brand, but also in the interior with its high quality of finish and outstanding elegance. Exclusive style and a supreme touch of quality are also borne out by the color scheme and the choice of materials, high-class wooden trim and selected color highlights on the door linings and seat upholstery providing a highly attractive contrast to the interior as a whole finished in discreet black.

As yet a further feature the cockpit of the MINI Roadster Concept comes with a multi-functional display able to provide a range of information according to the user’s individual choice. Positioned to the left of the rev counter, this display serves, for example, to show the driver exactly how much time he has spent on the road with the roof down, like with the Openometer Timer on the MINI Convertible, and is also able to provide further display functions typical of MINI.

For 20 years, Mazda has been focused on reducing weight, which has become a tradition with the Mazda MX-5. At the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show next week, Mazda will build on that philosophy with the unveiling of the Mazda MX-5 Superlight Concept.”

There are no plans to build this car, but it demonstrates how individual mobility can be maintained in a way that uses fewer natural resources,” said Mazda in a statement.

The fully-drivable concept was built by Mazda’s European R&D center in Oberursel. The project’s lead designer, Hasip Girgin, said that the focus was too keep the whole vehicle below 1,000 kg (2,204 lbs) while offering better driving dynamics and fuel efficiency. His design team reduced the MX-5 down to its core attributes to create a pure roadster concept. “The lack of a windshield required an extension of the original aluminum bonnet into the cabin. The attached sheet here is made of lightweight carbon fiber and provides a hood for the dashboard frame.”

Power for the Mazda MX-5 Superlight Concept comes from a MZR 1.8L 4-cylinder engine making 126-hp. It is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. To get some exciting sound from the engine, Mazda added Mazdaspeed cold-air intake and a Mazdaspeed exhaust system.

Make the leap for the high-res image gallery.

So far the Mini Coupe Concept has gathered a positive reaction from those who have seen the pictures prior to the actual unveiling scheduled for the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. We’ve also seen a fuzzy spy shot of the Mini Roadster Concept that will debut alongside the coupe.

We reported last week that BMW plans to put the Mini Coupe into production within two to three years. Well, according to sources that spoke with BBC, a production version of the Coupe along with the Mini Roadster is more than certain.

Sources told BBC that BMW will add 1,000 jobs at its Oxfordshire plant to build two new models for the Mini brand.

Separately, Jim McDowell, Mini USA president told Automotive News that the Mini Coupe concept has received positively so far.

“We think we have a good idea, and we want to get people’s reaction to it,” said McDowell. “If there is a great response, as I predict there will be, I think you will see it going into production.”

It’s true – less than a year since production commenced on the 2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe, it has ceased. July 29, 2009 marked the last day of production for General Motors Company’s Boxwood plant in Delaware, which is responsible for making GM’s Kappa-platform, the Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky and the recently introduced 2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe.

The hard-top Solstice Coupe took the 2008 New York Auto Show by storm. The more aggressive and sleeker looking targa-top fastback offers up an alternative for those who aren’t always looking for fun in the sun, but alas, as the rest of the Pontiac faces extinction, so does the Solstice.

“To me, it’s not a celebration,” said James Graves, a 29-year veteran of GM’s Boxwood plant. “It’s a sad day. It’s like a funeral.”

2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe GXP Specifications:

Base Price: $30,375
Price as Tested: $33,140
Engine: 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder Ecotec – 260-hp/260 lb-ft of torque.
Transmission: 5-Speed manual
Curb Weight: 3018 lbs
0 to 60 mph: 5.5 seconds
Fuel-Economy: 19/28 mpg city/highway

Exterior:

“The new Solstice coupe has all the design cues and pleasing performance of the original roadster, and is an all-season alternative for people who enjoy open-air driving,” said Susan Docherty, vice president of Buick-Pontiac-GMC.

There is no doubt that the 2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe looks outstanding. Put it on the road next to any other coupe or sportback, and it is sure to attract the lion’s share of the attention. However, despite the dramatic new look, GM says that engineers made minor changes to create a hard-top version of the Solstice. The model features a fixed roof aft the B-piller, complete with side windows and a rear lift-glass providing easy access to the storage compartment behind the seat. The sloping roofline provides the look of a classic fastback, as it runs from the front of the roof and merges with the ever fashionable ducktail style rear spoiler.

The roof, which weighs 31 pounds, can be removed easily by one person – or so GM says. I personally had trouble taking the roof off myself, and not because I’m weak. It was because it is just too big for one person to take off without fear of damaging it. A soft roof-cover is available as an added option though, just in case you get caught with your top down on a rainy day. Gm Accessories also sells a storage case for the removable roof.

Interior:

Not much differs between the Coupe and the Roadster. However, GM did do a little redesigning though in the area behind the seats, providing easy access to the cargo area. It also seems that GM’s engineers couldn’t find place for a cupholder, so they haphazardly placed them behind the headrests.

Interior options include AM/FM and CD stereo with six speakers, an enhanced sound system with an MP3-compatible stereo and an iPod jack, XM Satellite Radio and of course, OnStar.

Our 2009 Pontiac Solstice GXP included a two-way power driver seat height adjuster, racing-inspired sport bucket seats with GXP stitching, a leather-wrapped manual shift knob, an adjustable steering wheel, and a rear window defogger. Oh, and while we’re talking about the rear-window, there is a huge issue with rear-visibility, or the lack there of.

Performance:

Based on GM’s Kappa-platform, the rear-wheel-drive 260-hp 2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe GXP goes from 0 to 60 mph in about 5.5 seconds; pretty impressive for its class. The rough 5 speed manual transmission and subpar handling detract from the experience in a big way though.

Our test vehicle, the 2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe GXP, was powered by a 2.0L turbocharged Ecotec that produces 260-hp and a peak torque of 260 lb-ft. Now, when you look at GM’s list of key competitors you might begin to wonder why you would spend $30,375 on this car.

GM says that the base model Solstice targets the Mazda MX-5 Miata and its retractable hardtop, while the Solstice Coupe GXP targets the Nissan 370Z. Why anyone would opt to spend a single dollar on the Solstice when they can pick up a 332-hp 2009 370Z for just over $29,000 is beyond us.

Overall:

So should you be glad the 2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe is now dead? Well, it all depends on how much you love Pontiac and American cars, because if we had $30,375 to spend on a brand new car, we’d be heading into the Nissan dealership right about now.
