Still upset at General Motors for killing of the Pontiac and Saturn brands? According to a new report, nearly two-thirds of Pontiac owners and almost three-fourths of Saturn drivers has left General Motors to other automakers as they bought new vehicles in 2010.

GM got rid of Pontiac, Saturn and Hummer as a part of its government scripted bankruptcy restructuring in 2009 and was hoping that buyers of those brands stick within the remaining GM family.

There are about 3 million Pontiacs, Saturns and Hummers on U.S. roads that GM wants to keep and transfer their loyalty to a Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac.

While GM says that a Chevy is a top choice for many Pontiac and Saturn owners, most of those customers are moving to rival brands, including Honda, Toyota and Nissan. In 2010, GM retained 36 percent of Pontiac owners who bought new vehicles, and 26 percent of Saturn and 39 percent from Hummer, according to J.D. Power & Associates.

A certain group of enthusiasts will always appreciate the late Pontiac G8 GXP and its Australian sibling the Holden Commodore lineup. Many wagon lovers will also miss the Holden SS-V Special Edition Sportwagon, which shares the same front face of the Pontiac G8.

Even though the 362-hp V8 powering the Holden SS-V Special Edition Sportwagon may be enough for some, Australian tuner Walkinshaw Performance felt it could use a little more power. With the help of a supercharger and a water-to-air intercooler Walkinshaw’s SS-V Sportwagon makes a total of 600-hp and 568 lb-ft of torque.

Walkinshaw says it can fit the performance package on any other Holden VE model, including the Statesmen, Caprice, and Ute.

Prices for the fully modified Holden SS-V Sportwagon start at AUS $43,990 ($40,200 USD). The package itself is available for AUS $3,590 ($3,300 USD).

Chevy plans to announce this Monday that it will be offering a new model for police use, likely to be based on the Pontiac G8. Chevy will outline their strategy to convention of police chiefs in Denver, Colorado, said the division in an e-mail today.

According to Automotive News, GM CEO Fritz Henderson told an Australian newspaper that the automaker is working on car for American cops, based of a Holden vehicle. “We’ve been working on a package for (U.S.) police applications. I think that’s going to work,” Henderson told The Sydney Morning Herald. “We’re pretty optimistic about it.”, reports Automotive News.

With GM set to drop Pontiac from its lineup, a spokesman from Chevrolet declined to acknowledge whether or not the G8 is the car in question.

GM also denied a story five months ago that they were considering rebadging the G8 as the Caprice and marketing it to police agencies. In July however, a GM source said the G8 would be rebadged and positioned as a pricier sedan above the Impala, but Vice Chairman Bob Lutz bloged a week later that the plan was dead.

“The G8 will not be a Caprice after all,” Lutz wrote. “Upon further review and careful study, we simply cannot make a business case for such a program. Not in today’s market, in this economy, and with fuel regulations what they are and will be.”

While we’re still mourning the death of the Pontiac G8 sedan, Holden has launched two special edition models of the Commodore, which the G8 was based on. The two models, based on the SS V-Series Special Edition sedan, Sportwagon and Ute, get styling treatments that are reminiscent of our beloved Pontiac G8.

The models ditch the original Australian style grille in favor of the two-part grille as seen on the Pontiac G8. Basically, the special edition models are a Pontiac G8 without the Pontiac badge.

Press Release:

Holden to Launch Two New Special Editions

Holden will hit the streets with two new special edition models delivering very different approaches to Australia’s best-selling car range.

The SS V-Series Special Edition sedan, Sportwagon and Ute will achieve immediate attention with styling treatments even more aggressive than Holden’s established performance hero models.

For motorists seeking great value, International sedan and Sportwagon models will deliver $7,500 of extra features (based on recommended retail price of extra features) including leather seat trim and 18 inch alloy wheels.

Holden Director of Marketing Philip Brook said the two offerings highlighted the different ways in which Holden special editions stimulated demand in Australia’s best-selling range.

“These vehicles cater to motorists at both ends of the Commodore-buying spectrum – those looking for great value and those looking for striking performance looks,” Brook said.

“SS V-Series has always been about sports performance and ultimate road presence. Now we’ve dialled it up even further.

“The International edition is even better value when you combine extra features with the advanced 3.0 litre direct injection engine and 6-speed automatic transmission.”

SS V-Series Special Edition Sedan, Sportwagon and Ute

The SS V-Series Special Edition will boast a new aggressive twin nostril front fascia with unique lower splitter and twin letter-box hood scoops. The sedan variant will feature a decklid spoiler and chrome highlights.

On sale from November, the SS V-Series Special Edition will be available in three colours ““ Phantom black, Red Hot and Voodoo blue.

The Recommended Retail Prices (RRP), not including dealer delivery or Government charges, for the three SS V-Series Special Edition packs are carryover from the standard SS V-Series models and are as follows:

- VE Ute SS V-Series Special Edition (man) $47,490 RRP

The Pontiac G8 is one car that many keep hoping will see resurrection. At first, there were rumors that the much-loved G8 my be revived as a Chevrolet Caprice. General Motors’ Bob Lutz even confirmed that the Detroit automaker will go ahead with a Chevrolet based on the Pontiac G8, only to disappoint us later saying that the company can’t make a business case for it.

Yesterday, during a live chat session on GM FastLane Blog, Buick/GMC manager Susan Docherty was asked whether the Buick Grand National could be revived based on the Pontiac G8.

“The G8 won’t become the Buick Grand National,” said Docherty. Furthermore, she confirmed that there will be no Buick Coupe and no return of Pontiac.

Check out our review on the 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP.

“There continues to be lots of questions about a Buick coupe and even specific questions about a Riviera for Buick’s future,” she said. “We don’t have any plans in the short term, however, we’ll continue to evaluate what would be best for Buick. We have had great response for the Riviera concept revealed in Bejing.”

Docherty said that Buick plans to introduce two more sedans, one will be mid-sized and the other will be compact.

However, she did say that the brand is “keeping our fingers crossed on a future Buick Riviera “” it would be a nice addition.”

Last month, we were officially told that the Pontiac G8 will not survive as a Chevrolet Caprice.

“I”d mentioned it, and said we were studying it, giving it a serious look, because a car like the G8 was just too good to waste,” said Lutz. “That”s all still true. But I have to say that, with my new “marketing” hat on, upon further review and careful study, we simply cannot make a business case for such a program. Not in today”s market, in this economy, and with fuel regulations what they are and will be.”

As reported earlier this morning, GM held a little group meeting with a bunch of PR folks and social media geeks. According to Twitterer Joel Feder, who spoke with Bob Lutz at the event, the G8 may actually come back as a high-end Chevrolet.

Lutz said that the G8 may return “as a really high end Chevy” not as a caprice. Expect “high end brakes, huge engine, big and fast. Like four door Corvette.”

Take this with a grain of salt because nothing is official unless it’s confirmed by GM itself. Not to mention, GM is well known for changing their mind.

We know the title of this article angers a lot of you (and no one is probably more angry then us who had the privilege to experience the top-of-the-line Pontiac G8 GXP for a whole week).

During a live chat earlier this week, Maximum Bob Lutz said that the Pontiac G8 will be saved as a Chevrolet Caprice when GM kills the Pontiac brand at the end of this year.

“The G8 has finally been discovered by a broader percentage of the buying public. The owners are ecstatic about them, many calling it the best sedan they”ve ever driven,” said Lutz. “We consider it too good to waste. So we”re studying the feasibility of bringing it in as a Caprice for both law enforcement and the public.”

Writing over at GM’s Fast Lane Blog today, Bob Lutz said that the “G8 will not be a Caprice after all.”

Lutz said that the GM must be very careful as to where it allocates its budgets for the time being. He said that for now the resources must be allocated elsewhere. He reinforced that the move does not mean that GM is backing away from performance or rear-wheel-drive.

“We have a tremendous RWD team in Australia that gave us the beloved G8, a team that we will tap into at some point again in the future for its expertise and sheet metal. Just not right now.”

General Motors Company CEO Fritz Henderson has been very vocal about his dislike for rebadging. He has repeatedly denied that the now dead Pontiac G8 would not be rebadged or imported as a Cadillac, Buick or Chevrolet. However, ‘unretired’ Bob Lutz is back and he’s telling the media that the G8 will live on.

In an interview with Automobile Magazine, Bob Lutz said that the G8 would find its way into Chevrolet showrooms under the Caprice name.

“The last time we looked at [the G8], we decided that we would continue to import it as a Chevrolet,” Lutz said. “It is kind of too good to waste.”

Lutz also confirmed that the Cadillac CTS-V Coupe is still in the pipeline along with a possibility of a CTS-V Wagon. He said that the government’s auto task force has shown special interest in the CTS-V Coupe.

It’s no secret that GM will phase out the Pontiac brand in 2010 with the 2010 Pontiac Vibe being the last model from the brand. Even though the Pontiac G8 is the most loved Pontiac model after the GTO, GM’s CEO Fritz Henderson is not a fan of keeping it alive.

Fritz has said over-and-over again that the G8 will not live on as a model in one of its four-core brands. There was some hope earlier this month when GM”s vice chairman of global product development Tom Stephens, said that the Pontiac G8 may survive with another GM badge.

Well, Fritz has blatantly rejected the idea once again. In his second online-chat with media and analysts on Friday, Fritz was asked whether or not “Pontiac G8 have any kind of future within General Motors as a re-badged model.” Fritz simply replied “I am not a fan of rebadging.”

What is it going to take to convince Fritz that Americans love and want the G8 to live on? Driving a bunch of G8s to the Renaissance Center may be one option but for now – we’re guessing a poll may help out. So let us know. Would you buy a Pontiac G8 if it was rebadged as Chevrolet or Buick?

Amidst GM’s “˜surgical bankruptcy’ process after which GM plans to discontinue the Pontiac brand, we were privileged enough to spend a week test-driving the 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP. Initially, we were expecting the likes of the Charger/300C SRT8; a soft ride with an automatic transmission just barely powerful enough for highway pulls and loud drive bys. Instead what we encountered was a vehicle that could not have been more properly built, striking a perfect balance between finesse and power; a fitting and proper farewell from a brand that that once made the Pontiac GTO that was the epitome of American Muscle.

The fastest of the rear-wheel-drive G8 lineup (GM’s captive import of the Australian made Holden VE Commodore), the GXP sports a 415 horsepower V8 Corvette engine, a Tremec TR-6060 six-speed manual transmission, ventilated Brembo disc brakes, and a Nurburgring – tuned FE3 suspension package; all traits sought by any enthusiast in a high-performance sedan.

Exterior:

It is evident that Pontiac put much into the aesthetics of this car, the company’s first full-size vehicle since they ceased production on the GTO after 2006, and the first full-size sedan since production ceased on the Bonneville in 2005. The base G8 model sports crisp, clear-cut creases and an aggressive hood, while the GXP adds to those traits with its unique front fascia with a lower slung grille and a distinctive rear fascia diffuser, contributing to an overall sportier appearance. Subtler features such as; the dual-port grille, fog lamp, and the cars sharp “˜wheels-at-the-corners stance’ also turn many heads. The car sits on a set of 19-inch wheels wrapped in 245/40R19 Bridgestone Potenza RE050A’s.

Interior:

The GXP sports seats comfortable enough for everyday driving yet supportive enough to handle the G-force generated by even the most spirited driver, a backseat with enough room to comfortably hold 3 adults (including our 6′ 3″ intern), and a steering wheel that while may pose as a nuisance to some due to its odd shape, much like an Audi steering wheel, had a comfortable and sport feel, thanks to its leather trim.

Though the car is very comfortable on the whole, there are a few things concerning the interior that detracted from our overall experience. For starters, the vehicle information display, navigation, and stereo controls are too cluttered and inefficient to operate, given the small nature of the LCD screen that they share. The HVAC controls are also in a position inconveniently accessed by the driver, as they sit nearer the passenger side of the dash. Having those controls located in the upper dash “pocket”, would provide much more convenient and efficient access for the driver in our opinion. The voice command feature is also disappointing, as the software’s language recognition capabilities are poor at best. It kept telling us our commands sounded too much like “exit” and “connect” after which we decided to give up using the feature. The window controls suffer a two second delay before going down automatically, and lack the ability to go back up automatically. The rear-view mirror also vibrated aggressively from the bass of the 230-watt Blaupunkt audio system.

Performance:

However, all of those flaws seem so petty once your foot hits the gas pedal. The 415-hp Corvette LS3 V8 engine gets up to 415 lb-ft of torque, the Tremec transmission shifts flawlessly from gear to gear, and the “1-4″ gear shift animation in the center of the speedometer made driving this car in a civilized manner less of a chore. Nonetheless, driving in a civilized manner is one option that many enthusiasts will choose to ignore due to the sudden boost of acceleration that comes when from this Aussie beast. Once you hear the rumbling roar from the 415-hp LS3 V8, you are instantly reminded why you dropped 40 grand on this Pontiac Though the car is available with a Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission, we feel that on this vehicle, such a transmission would detract from the overall driving experience that the 2009 G8 GXP provides.

The G8 GXP departs from your typical “˜all power and no handling’ high-performance American vehicle, embodying both power and precision. The Nurburgring tuned suspension, with its front end MacPherson strut design, and rear end “˜coil-over-shock’ design, allows the GXP to handle even the tightest turns with ease and precision. A direct-acting front stabilizer bar, decoupled rear stabilizer bar, and lateral ball joints on the rear suspension provide increased lateral stiffness for faster, and more responsive handling. In keeping with the trend of superior performance not generally expected from an American muscle car, the GXP is able to come to a complete stop from 60mph in only 110 feet, due to the fantastic braking abilities of the Brembo 4 piston brakes.

The 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP is not just another American muscle car with nothing more than a loud naturally aspirated V8 engine. It is a high-performance car that demonstrates a balance between power and handling that is usually reserved for its German counterparts.

Overall:

We were completely blown away by the Pontiac G8 GXP, but it was a bittersweet experience given the fate of Pontiac. The G8 had been shortlisted for the 2009 North American Car of the Year award, with the Hyundai Genesis eventually taking the honor. After an initial planned cutback in production of by 97% announced in February, GM eventually decided to drop Pontiac all together to focus on their four core brands. Yes folks, the first and only affordable high-performance sedan from GM that many compared to BMWs and Mercedes-Benz is no more.

The 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP comes with a base price of $38,360. However, with a $1,500 cash-back offer being offered by many Pontiac dealers, one could obtain one for $36,860. At that price, the 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP becomes an outstanding deal. Priced so moderately for such a high-performing car, the G8 GXP makes a great car for the enthusiast effected by today’s economy. We can only hope that GM finds a place for this Aussie behemoth elsewhere in their stable.

We’ve been driving around in the 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP for the past couple of days, and the more we drive it, the more we hear Fritz Henderson’s voice in the back of our heads – “No, the G8 will not be rebranded as a Chevy or Caddy.”

To be a little opinionated, if GM killed the G8 along with Pontiac, they would be killing a great car.

Well, it seems like they are finally realizing that. According to GM’s vice chairman of global product development Tom Stephens, the Pontiac G8 may survive with another GM badge.

“I know there’s still discussions on it,” Stephens told Automotive News. “But Chevrolet already has several sedans. How many sedans do you need to cover the waterfront?”

The Pontiac G8 is engineered and put together by GM’s Holden brand; and that V8 from the Corvette in the G8 GXP just puts a huge grin on our faces.

We’ll be bringing you our full review on the 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP shortly – so stay tuned.

Even though the ‘New GM’ will be forced to focus on producing fuel-efficient vehicles, it won’t abandon efforts to give its Corvette enthusiasts the much loved rear-wheel-drive, V8 power they have come to love.

“My wonderful baby is my 2005 Corvette coupe,” CEO Fritz Henderson said in his first online chat after filing GM’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. “We have more in store for the future and this iconic brand will retain its powerful place within the new GM.”

Nonetheless, GM’s plans to offer fuel-efficient vehicles puts some hope back into the future of American cars competing with Toyotas and Hondas. Henderson confirmed that a 4-cylinder turbo for the new 2010 Buick LaCrosse will be offered shortly after the start of production.

The 2010 Buick LaCrosse (which is the third most anticipated future GM vehicle according to you guys), will go on sale later this summer with a 255-hp 3.0L V6 and an optional 280-hp 3.6L V6. Henderson said that GM has plans to introduce a “performance 4-cylinder Ecotec” shortly after the 2010 LaCrosse enters production.

The Buick Invicta concept, which is the basis for the new LaCrosse, was powered by Buick”s first direct-injection turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that makes 250-hp and 220 lb-ft of torque. It is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

That 4-cylinder turbo is expected to compete with Ford’s line of EcoBoost V6 engines, which are offered as V8 alternatives. GM’s 1.4L turbo 4-cylinder salted for the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze is expected to be pillar of GM’s fuel-economy plans.

As for the 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP (which I’m driving this week), Henderson simply said that the model will not live on as a Chevrolet or as an entry-level Cadillac. There is no room for the car in the Buick lineup as well.

“We are not going to give up on getting the Commodore into the US,” a Holden insider has told GoAuto. Holden has made it pretty clear that ever since GM announced the death of Pontiac, it is doing all it can to not end Australian exports to the U.S.

Insiders say that ever since the death of Pontiac was announced, officials have been looking at different options that they are not able to discuss as of yet.

It is reported that Pontiac’s partnership with Holden was originally an unfortunate mistake. Apparently Bob Lutz fell in love with Monaro and thought it would a great vehicle to replace the Pontiac GTO. Eventually, that brought the Commodore to the U.S. as the G8.

For those of you still upset about the death of the Pontiac G8 ST (which was cancelled before the death of the brand since GM ran out of cash to market the car), Holden feels that the model could now perform well in the GMC range. Holden and GMC have already been working together on the Denali concept car, which was built by Holden in Australia.

Other options to continue Holden exports to the U.S. include Chevrolet. Currently, Holdens are sold as Chevrolets in the Middle East. Sources say that Holden could also supply Cadillac with rear-wheel-drive long and short wheelbase VEs.

Holden believes that there is clearly a high demand in the U.S. for its Commodore as a niche vehicle – and we definitely agree. GM sold a total of 2,939 units of the G8 in March despite cutting back on marketing.

Reports say that Holden, which also makes the Vauxhall VXR8, is going to lose up to $729 million a year from the death of Pontiac.

Holden has reportedly spent millions on converting its factory to build left-hand models and had ambitions to export 30,000 units of the G8 annually to the United States. Holden had hoped to export 70,000 VE Commodores a year, which is the basis for the Vauxhall VXR8 and G8.

The Australian unit is now fearing job cuts and is preparing cost cutting method due to the death of Pontiac.

Pontiac will be losing its image of the “American BMW” that was once envisioned by Bob Lutz. According to sources, after confirming that there will be no replacement for the Solstice, Pontiac will drop the rear-wheel-drive G8 sedan in about 5-years.

InsideLine reports that Pontiac will not be getting the next rear-wheel-drive platform that underpins Australian Holden Commodore. The move comes as GM switches the direction for Pontiac in the feature.

Killing both, the Solstice roadster and the next-generation G8 sedan, will leave Pontiac with no rear-wheel-drive models. GM is saying that the driving forces behind the decision are the rise in fuel-economy standards and a consumer shift to more fuel-efficient vehicles.

We saw the Pontiac G8 GXP at the 2008 New York Auto Show earlier this year. The most powerful car in the GXP series, GM claims that the 6.2L V8 small-block under the hood produces 402-hp and 402 lb-ft of torque. That allows for a 0-60 mph time of 4.7 seconds.

Well after some dyno testing, engineers have found more power under the hood. After undergoing testing on a SAE J1349 dyno, GM found that the 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP produces a total of 415-hp with a maximum torque of 415 lb-ft. Not sure if that effects the 0-60 time by much. The engine is mated to a Hydra-Matic 6-speed automatic with an optional 6-speed Tremec TR6060 manual.

The 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP will hit dealerships later this year. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.
