Press Release:

Nissan Celebrates Four Decades of Sports Car Leadership With New, Limited Edition 370Z “40th Anniversary” Model

Forty Years After the Debut of the Original Datsun 240Z, the Iconic Z® Continues to Capture the Imagination and Passion of Sports Car Enthusiasts Worldwide –

The 25th anniversary is silver, the 50th is gold. And the 40th? Another precious metal, or more correctly metal, rubber and glass – the Nissan Z®. Forty years ago, on October 22, 1969, the Datsun 240Z arrived in North America, heralding a new era in sports car design.

Where previous sports cars were primarily a.) imported from England or Germany b.) expensive c.) fragile or unreliable or d.) all of the above, the new import from Japan offered the performance of a Porsche, the looks of a Jaguar and the price and reliability of, well, a Nissan. The 240Z was a revelation to the automotive world – an affordable sports car that could be driven every day and was accessible to anyone with the $3,626 base price.

And though the price of a new Z® might have changed a little in the past 40 years, its unmatched value, style, performance and segment leadership remains stronger than ever. To celebrate, Nissan has created a special, limited production version of the current 2010 Nissan 370Z Coupe, the 370Z 40th Anniversary Edition. It will be available at select Nissan dealers nationwide beginning in spring 2010.

“Throughout the history of the automobile, a rare handful of cars stand apart as vehicles that not only capture the imagination of the world but also embody the essence of the automaker’s brand, engineering and ideals. The Z® is just such a vehicle,” said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc.

Changing Times – Literally
When the original Datsun 240Z debuted as a 1970 model, its design and performance were considered state-of-the-art: a 150-horsepower 2.4-liter single overhead cam inline 6-cylinder engine, 4-wheel independent suspension, 14-inch wheels, choice of a 4-speed manual or 3-speed automatic transmission, and a quarter-mile acceleration time of 17.1 seconds at 84.5 miles per hour. The 240Z was conceived as a closed coupe body, rather than the typical open-top sports cars of the age, to enhance body rigidity and, therefore, improve handling and durability.

Needless to say, a lot has changed. Today’s definition of state-of-the-art, as expressed in the sixth generation Nissan 370Z, includes a 332-horsepower 3.7-liter dual overhead cam V6 engine with VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift), lightweight 4-wheel independent suspension with extensive use of aluminum components, available 19-inch super lightweight forged alloy wheels, choice of 6-speed manual transmission with innovative SynchroRev Match™ or refined 7-speed automatic and independent quarter-mile acceleration times of 13.5 seconds at 106.6 miles per hour. And today, the recently introduced 370Z Roadster – with its automatic-operation fully lined cloth top, offers nearly the same body rigidity and performance as the rock-solid 370Z Coupe.

Also, where the 240Z offered what many considered “luxuries” in a sports car – including roll-up windows and radio, today’s 370Z is offered with items such as Nissan Intelligent Key™ with Push Button Start, Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System, XM® Satellite Radio and an advanced Nissan Hard Drive Navigation System with touch-screen, XM NavTraffic® Real-Time Traffic Information and NavWeather® (XM® subscription required, sold separately), Zagat® restaurant guide, 9.3GB Music Box hard drive for digital music storage and playback and a USB fort for iPod® connectivity.

About the Nissan 370Z 40th Anniversary Edition
The 370Z 40th Anniversary Edition starts out as a 370Z Coupe Touring model equipped with manual transmission and Sport Package (including SynchroRev Match™, front chin spoiler, rear spoiler, Nissan Sport Brakes, 19-inch Rays forged aluminum-alloy wheels and viscous limited-slip differential) and adds a premium “40th Quartz” exterior color and red leather-appointed interior.

Additional exclusive equipment includes a high-luster smoke wheel finish, red brake calipers and 40th Anniversary badges on the rear hatch and front strut tower brace. Inside, along with the red leather-appointed seats are red door panel inserts, 40th Anniversary seatback and floormat embroidery, red stitching on the center stack, shift boot and kneepads, smooth leather steering wheel with red stitching and a plaque of authenticity. Every 40th Anniversary Z® also comes with a commemorative premium satin car cover.

Pricing of the 370Z 40th Anniversary Edition will be announced closer to its on-sale date next spring.

A Brief History: Six Generations of Z®
The journey from the original 240Z to the current 370Z, of course, made a number of interesting stops along the past 40 years. Interestingly, the 240Z might not have made the journey to America in the first place, if not for the efforts of one man.

Though many, many people were responsible for the design and engineering of the first generation 240Z, its success in North America can be attributed to Yutaka Katayama, who was president of Nissan’s U.S. operations at the time. Known affectionately as “Mr. K,” he was convinced that the company’s new sports car design would be a hit in the U.S. There was just one problem – the vehicle’s name: the Fairlady Z (which is still used in the Japanese market today).

With a name change for this market to “240Z” and some aggressive marketing, including early motorsports success, the Z® became an instant hit – bringing attention and buyers not just to Z®, but also to the entire brand.

After overseeing Nissan’s growth in the U.S. in the ‘70s, Katayama returned to Japan and remains, to this day, linked to the Z®’s success here and around the world. On September 15th, 2009, Mr. K celebrated his 100th birthday and received cards and birthday greetings from Z® lovers everywhere.

In 1974, as the engine displacement climbed to 2.6 liters the name changed to 260Z. The 2+2 model with an extended roofline and tiny back seat also appeared. In 1975, engine size increased again to 2.8 liters and the name changed to 280Z. Z® cars continued to dominate on the racetrack, with Pete Brock, John Morton, Bob Sharp and P.L. (Paul) Newman among the many talented drivers.

Z® sales continued to climb with the introduction in 1979 of the new second generation 280ZX. Now priced at just under $10,000, the 280ZX was named Motor Trend “Import Car of the Year” and sales passed 86,000 units. T-tops and a turbocharged engine followed in the early ‘80s.

In 1984, Z® engine displacement increased again, with a 3.0-liter V6 replacing the classic Z® inline-6, and the 300ZX was born. Also, a specially equipped model celebrating the company’s 50th anniversary and priced at $25,999 was introduced. The 1984 Z® was the best selling sports car in America.

The next breakthrough in Z® history came in 1990 with the arrival of the totally redesigned, fourth generation 300ZX. Offered in two-seat and four-seat 2+2 models, it offered an unheard of 222 horsepower and a top speed of 150 mph. A few months later, the 300ZX Turbo followed – with 300 horsepower, a 160-mph top speed and a $33,000 price tag.

The 1990 300ZX captured the Z®’s second Motor Trend “Import Car of the Year” award, along with a spot on Car and Driver and Road & Track “10 Best” lists. The 300ZX also captured Automobile’s “Design of the Year” and the first of four “All-Stars” awards.

By the mid-‘90s, however, sports car sales in general were slowing and the Z® had lost its “affordable” sports car positioning. With Z® sales declining sharply and the core “value” positioning no longer part of the “Z® DNA,” sales of the Z® in the U.S. slumped and sales were stopped following the 1996 model year. The last 300ZX imported into the U.S. was inducted into the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.

The next chapter of the Z® history came just before the end of the century. In 1999, Nissan and Renault formed what has become the highly successful Renault-Nissan Alliance.

Mr. Carlos Ghosn was assigned by Renault to head the new management team. Among his first tasks was not just to look at the business aspects, but to find the “soul” of the company. In interview after interview, people inside and outside the company brought up one model to him, one letter: Z®.

Development of the new Z® began later that year, with the return to the values of the original 240Z – a car that sports car enthusiasts would look forward to driving everyday; quick, inspiring and affordable.

In summer 2002, the Z® was reborn with the introduction of the 2003 350Z. It was delivered, as promised, with an MSRP of under $30,000.

Following the 350Z’s unprecedented success, the sixth generation Z®, the 2009 370Z was launched last December. Now the little sports car that could comes full circle with the announcement of the 370Z 40th Anniversary Edition.

“It’s almost inconceivable that it has been 40 years since the original 240Z changed the course of Nissan and the concept of affordable, everyday sports cars,” said Castignetti. “In a year, 1969, marked by the first man to walk on the moon, the 240Z made a remarkable first step of its own. Happy anniversary, Z®.”

Like a fine wine, the Nissan 370Z has gotten better with age. Many manufacturers are making performance cars less exciting, more driver friendly and more road-friendly, as evidenced by the new Evolution and Miata. Here is the question that plagues us: should a sports car have the traditional qualities of being loud, unforgiving, and brutish; or should it be re-made into a daily driver by making it quieter, gentler, and overall more vanilla?

This is the first full redesign of the Nissan Z since its re-introduction in 2003. The 2009 model features a shorter wheelbase, lightweight body materials, a new 3.7L engine with more power and improved fuel-economy, a new 7-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, the world’s first synchronized downshift rev matching system for the manual transmission and much more. The 2009 Nissan 370Z basically outperforms its predecessor in every aspect, it is faster, it handles better, stops shorter and has a more comfortable and solid ride.

Exterior:

As soon as you set your sights on the 2009 370Z, you’ll notice that it’s much smaller than the 350Z – nearly four inches shorter to be exact (100.4 inches versus 104.3 inches). At the same time, the overall width has been increased by 1.3 inches, the rear track by 2.2 inches and overall height reduced by 0.3 inches, giving the 370Z a much more aggressive stance.

The love it or hate it styling of the 370Z combines retro and modern design into one unit, which we feel works out well, but that’s about it. The retro aspects of the car are not nearly as exaggerated as those found in the Camaro or the Mustang, but it certainly does not go unnoticed. Both the front and rear lights are oddly shaped, the front bumper is split for brake cooling by bodycolor fin-like splitters that are set in a black grille. There is a rectangular-like opening in the bottom of the rear bumper that reminds of a tow-hitch mount; the lines on the hood continue onto the roof and actually add a great aesthetic touch.

Opt for the 2009 Nissan 370Z with a Sport Package and you’ll get a front-chin spoiler, a body-color rear spoiler and 19 inch RAYS super-lightweight forged alloy wheels with little ‘Z’s in the 5 spokes.

Interior:

“As an Everyday Sports Car, every aspect of the interior needs to address two needs – support and enhanced driver performance during spirited driving and offer high levels of comfort and utility for normal commuting and around-town activities,” says Al Castignetti, vice president, Sales, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc. The interior of the 370Z has gone through a night-and-day transformation since the last generation. The interior is exceptional in terms of design, ergonomics, and surprisingly, even the materials are no longer rough hollow plastics that make you wonder why you spent over $30,000 on a Nissan. Instead, there are more expensive materials, softer-plastics, and leather trim around the center console, dashboard and doors.

The center stack reminds of an Infiniti especially on the Touring model. The Touring model features options such as standard 4-way power adjustable heated synthetic suede and leather-appointed sport seats with adjustable lumbar support, a Bose audio system with 8 speakers and MP3/WMA playback, XM Satellite Radio, Bluetooth connectivity and optional navigation package, with Nissan’s touch screen hard-drive navigation system with a 9.3GB Music Box Hard Drive and iPod input.

So what happens if you don’t go for the Touring model with Nissan’s tech-savvy navigation system? Well, then you get a little storage bin in-place of the navigation system.

Before we move on, we must point out that our biggest pet-peeve on the 350Z is now gone. The giant beam in the back to keep your Z stable when taking fast turns is now gone and you can actually use the storage space provided in the trunk of your 2009 370Z.

Performance:

Its seems like Nissan’s engineering team made the simple power-to-weight formula their main focus when working out the performance of the 2009 Nissan 370Z. While being 225 pounds lighter, the new Nissan 370Z has 26 more horsepower than its ancestor. Power comes from a 3.7L VQ37VHR V6 engine with VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift) making 332-hp at 7,000 rpm with a maximum torque of 270 lb-ft at 5,200 rpm. 0 to 60 mph comes in about 5 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph.

All that makes the 2009 370Z harder, lighter, faster, tighter and better. However, there is one feature that impressed us the most in terms of performance and it’s called the SynchroRev Match, available only with the 6-speed manual transmission. It makes driving a manual sports car just a little more fun and easy to drive. Billed as the world’s first synchronized downshift rev matching system, the SynchroRev Match system automatically revs the engine so your road speed is matched to your revs when you’re downshifting. Therefore, you won’t feel the jerks and bumps, or make a fool out of yourself when you drive your new Z to pick up a hot date. It’s simple, clever, and made us love every second of downshifting in the 370Z.

As for handling, the 2009 Nissan 370Z is every bit better than its predecessor and most of its competition. Rear body torsion rigidity is improved by up to 22 percent and rear body vertical bending rigidity is improved by up to 30 percent. Nissan says that that results in “overall solidity and handling capability.” In short, you will feel very comfortable in putting the 370Z sideways and through twist and turns.

Overall:

So is there anything really wrong with the Nissan 370Z? Yes, it’s very loud and rugged. While it is a little more refined and quiet than its predecessor, the 370Z is a bit too nasty for an everyday commuter car. However, depending on how you look at it, that minute downside is overshadowed when you compare the 370Z with other cars in its segment that cost almost twice as much and don’t offer the same exhilaration. Take the new 2010 BMW Z4 for example. The 2010 Z4 sDrive30i starts at a whopping $45,750 with a 255-hp 3.0L inline 6 while the turbocharged 300-hp Z4 sDrive35i starts at $51,650. The 332-hp 2009 Nissan 370Z, on the other hand, offers every bit (and more) of Z4 fun with pricing starting at just $29,930 for the base model. Opt for the Sport Package (with the SnychroRev Match feature) and you’re looking at $32,930. If you want all the good stuff like Bluetooth, a Bose sound system, leather seats and other goodies, get ready to cash out $34,460 for the 370Z Touring. Even the top of the line 370Z Touring with a Sport Package (starting at $37,460) comes in at around $8,000 cheaper than the starting 255-hp BMW Z4 sDrive30i.

Oh, and let’s not forget – Nissan also offers the 350-hp NISMO 370Z starting at $39,130 – and that eats the 2010 BMW Z4 for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Unless of course you’re the classy, refined type.

However, Nissan’s powertrain engineering division manager, Tetsuya Takahashi, has indicated that his department is closely studying the possibility of turbocharged engines in their next generation of Nissan vehicles. Speaking to Motor Trend, Takahashi admitted that Nissan is looking to return to smaller displacement engines mated with turbochargers to increase performance and fuel-efficiency.

Of course, that has many Z fans dreaming of a possible future turbocharged model.

Basically, Nissan knows that it is reaching the limits of its most popular engines, especially the VQ line. So we’re guessing a new line of turbocharged engines couldn’t hurt. Keep your fingers crossed.

No power upgrades are reported for the Nurburgring edition, meaning the limited-edition 370Z continues to run on its 332-hp 3.7L V6.

So what’s all the Nurbugring-ness about? Nissan will throw on a set of 19-inch OZ Racing alloy wheels and you can expect some Nurburgring track logos on the seats and the floor-mats.

Nissan will build on 80 units of the yellow 370Z Nurburgring edition. Pricing starts at the U.S. dollar equivalent of $71,275. All 80 buyers will receive a bonus card worth $212 of public track days at the famous Nordschleife.

AutoExpress’ usual anonymous sources are claiming that Nissan is working on baby brother to the 370Z that would compete with the Mazda MX-5. The new small-car will be a drop-top, rear-wheel-drive two-seater with aggressive, sleek looks and outstanding performance.

Sources say that styling for the car will be influenced by the new Nissan 370Z and the Nissan Urge concept that made its debut at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show.

Power is expected to come from a 1.6L turbocharged engine that produces 200-hp allowing for a 0 to 60 mph time of 6.5 seconds with a top speed of 140 mph. Even with top-notch performance, the Nissan Mazda MX-5 rival will average a fuel-economy of around 35 mpg (29 mpg U.S.)

Insiders say that the car could hit showrooms by 2011.

2010 will be an exciting “green” year for Nissan. The Japanese automaker plans on introducing its electric-vehicle at the end of next year along with a hybrid version of the Infiniti M. Nonetheless, Nissan has been very slow at the wheel on the “green highway” when compared to its domestic rivals, Toyota and Honda.

Besides the two programs mentioned above, we haven’t heard much on Nissan hybrid/electric-vehicle initiatives. Usually, it’s right about here we say “until-now” so – until now.

Japanese sources are saying that Nissan is planning on using the hybrid system from the Infiniti M hybrid in the 370Z sports car in 2011, giving us the first high-performance hybrid sports car on the market.

The 370Z hybrid is rumored to get a version of the VQ 3.7L V6 engine mated to an electric-motor that runs on lithium-ion batteries (being produced by a joint venture between Nissan and NEC). Sources say that the hybrid system will also feature a plug-in electric-vehicle mode for regular city driving.

Insiders say that Nissan is projecting an average fuel-economy of 35 mpg combined.

Nissan’s European product strategy and planning manager Thomas Ebeling said that the Japanese automaker has lowered its expectations for its 370Z by a third due to the economic downturn. Ebeling said that Nissan had hoped to sell 30,000 units of the 370Z globally.

“The economic conditions we are facing today hit this kind of car much harder than those in other segments,” he told Automotive News Europe.

Nissan has now dropped its forecast for the 370Z to 10,000 annually in global sales. Most of those are expected to comer from North America with 3,000 coming form Europe.

Ebeling said that Nissan sold a total of 163,000 units of the 350Z since its launch in 2002.

The other day during Thanksgiving dinner a couple of us were arguing about the 0 to 60 time of the new 332-hp 2009 Nissan 370Z as reported by CARandDRIVER. The automotive enthusiast magazine said that the new Z goes from rest to 60 in 5 seconds which seemed a bit awkward to us since the new Z is smaller, lighter and more powerful this year.

Well, to our delight Motor Trend has just released their figures and they have reported a 0 to 60 mph time of 4.7 seconds. Motor Trend also reported a quarter mile run of 13.3 seconds at 105.7 mph. Pretty impressive for a car that starts at $29,930. For arguments sake the new $57,500 BMW M3 Coupe also does 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 second and the $56,610 Lexus IS-F reports a 0 to 60 mph time of 4.6 seconds.

Check out Motor Trend’s review after the jump.

Nissan has officially taken the covers off of the new 2009 Nissan 370Z – the first full redesign of the Nissan Z since its introduction in 2003. We already know that power will come from a 3.7L VQ37VHR engine with VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift) that makes 332-hp with a maximum torque of 270 lb-ft.

What we learned today from the live reveal of the 370Z is that the engine will be available with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard and a 7-speed automatic with paddle shifters as an option. Estimated fuel-economy for the 2009 Nissan 370Z come in at 18/26 mpg (city/highway) for both the 7-speed automatic and the 6-speed manual.

How much will all this cost you? Nissan said that the 2009 370Z will hit North American dealerships in January 2009 with prices starting at $29,930. Nissan will be offering the 370Z in just two trim-levels including 370Z and the 370Z Touring which adds heated leather-seats, HomeLink Universal Transceiver, Bluetooth, 8-speaker Bose audio system, XM Satellite Radio, cargo cover and aluminum pedals.

Two option packages will be offered including the Sport Package and the Navigation Package. Sport Package adds 19-inch RAYS forged wheels and Bridgestone Potenza tires, aerodynamic front and rear spoiler, larger Nissan Sport Brakes, SynchroRev Match and Viscous Limited Slip Differential. The Navigation Package adds a hard drive-based navigation system, 9.3GB Music Box hard drive and iPod connectivity.

Press Release:

ALL-NEW 2009 NISSAN 370Z: SCULPTED, ENGINEERED AND EQUIPPED TO SHIFT_DRIVING EXCITEMENT

– Super Evolution of the Iconic Nissan Z Expands the Sports Car “Sweet Spot” With An Unmatched Balance of Performance, Style and Value –

In the first full redesign of the iconic Nissan ZÒ since its re-introduction as a 2003 model, nearly every piece and component has been rethought or redesigned – shorter wheelbase, greater use of lightweight body materials, new engine with more horsepower and improved fuel economy, a new 7-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, a world’s first synchronized downshift rev matching system for the manual transmission, new high quality driver-centric interior and new available technology features.

But to get the full measure of the new model, now designated the Nissan 370Z, one need look no farther than the subtle upswept line of the new rear quarter window. Quintessentially ZÒ, the window harkens back to the original 1970 240Z – a car that revolutionized the sports car world with its unique combination of performance, style and, especially, value. The new 370Z solidifies the ZÒ’s position as one of the most desirable sports cars on the planet – at an affordable price – bringing true sports car performance to everyone.

“The fresh character of the 2009 Nissan 370Z is immediately apparent in the crisp new exterior design, which is sportier yet still immensely identifiable as a Nissan ZÒ,” said Al Castignetti, vice president, Sales, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc. “One usually thinks of evolution as being linear. The new 370Z’s ‘super evolution’ builds on the best features of both the first and last generations Z–cars – respectful but not retro, simple yet sophisticated, and 110 percent pure ZÒ.”

Solidifying the strengths of its immediate predecessor, the new 370Z was conceived as an “Everyday Sports Car,” targeting segment-leading performance and a base MSRP of around $30,000 (final performance figures and pricing to be available at a later date).

“The new 370Z lives in the sweet spot of performance, style and value, a position that Nissan invented with the original ZÒ. It’s an authentic sports car that you don’t have to make sacrifices to own – or drive everyday,” said Castignetti.

The new 2009 Nissan 370Z Coupe model is scheduled to go on sale in North America in January 2009, followed by a new 370Z Roadster for the 2010 model year.

The New Exterior: Not Just Sculptural, Functional

The 2009 370Z’s dynamic new styling offers dual benefits – a more aggressive appearance and a lighter, tighter structure for enhanced performance. The new Z’s wheelbase is nearly four inches shorter than the previous generation ZÒ (100.4 inches versus 104.3 inches), accomplished by moving the rear wheels forward in the 2nd generation FM platform, while overall length is reduced by 2.7 inches (167.1 inches versus 169.8 inches). At the same time, the overall width been increased by 1.3 inches, the rear track by 2.2 inches and overall height reduced by 0.3 inches, giving the 370Z a much more aggressive stance.

The more compact exterior dimensions and expanded use of lightweight materials help reduce weight. For the first time, the ZÒ features aluminum door panels, along with an all-aluminum hood (the previous aluminum hood design utilized steel reinforcements) and an aluminum hatch.

At the same time, the body structure was extensively revised, improving front body torsion rigidity by 30 percent; a new front suspension cradle to reduce front body lateral bending; new rear structural reinforcements; and an underbody “V-bar” to help reduce rear lateral bending. Other enhancements include the use of a carbon fiber composite radiator housing and strengthening of the rear fender and hatch areas.

Rear body torsion rigidity is improved by up to 22 percent and rear body vertical bending rigidity is improved by up to 30 percent. The result is enhanced overall solidity and handling capability. Even with all of the new body strengthening measures the overall body-in-white is lighter than the previous body-in-white.

“As every race car driver knows, weight is the enemy of performance and rigidity is the foundation for handling – but they usually work at cross purposes from each other,” said Castignetti. “With the new 370Z, the engineers were able to build a body that is both stronger and lighter, enhancing ZÒ’s athletic performance abilities.”

Along with its new structure and stance, the 370Z has a taut new skin – one that looks completely new, yet completely ZÒ. The exterior design incorporates intentional 240Z styling cues, a sleek aerodynamic shape, a “dynamic motion” feel with a dramatic cantilevered roof (with Nissan GT-R styling cues) and a “low visual gravity.”

The coefficient of drag is 0.30 (0.29 with the Sport Package), the same as the previous generation 350Z Coupe. The new ZÒ also maintains the previous generation’s zero front lift and zero rear lift when equipped with the rear spoiler, thanks to extensive aerodynamics efforts – including an “inverse area” front bumper design which smoothes the flow of air to the sides of the vehicle, while the rear design maximizes the control of air flow from the roof to the rear hatch. In addition, the front overhang was extended 1.2 inches and more than 200 rear quarter panel patterns were made and wind tunnel tested to counter the negative aerodynamic effects of shortening the wheelbase (versus the 350Z).

“The 370Z incorporates all of the signature ZÒ elements – the long nose, canopy cockpit, muscular fenders, vertical door handles,” said Castignetti. “What’s new is a more wheel-oriented, organic design with more of a sense of precision and agility.”

One of the most distinctive features of the bold new exterior design is the headlight/taillight treatment, which features a fierce “boomerang” shape. High Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-functional xenon headlights with auto on/off feature are standard.

The hood’s deep character lines continue over the windshield into the new, cantilevered roof design. The intense broad-shouldered rear shape is highlighted by the integration of the boomerang taillights and wide, flared rear fenders.

The 370Z’s sleek silhouette is defined by its upswept quarter window design that is echoed by the dynamic upward curvature in the lower rocker panel and the sense of the taut sheet metal molding itself around the wheels and frame. Attention to detail and functionality is evident throughout the exterior design, including the addition of a flashing (repeater lamp) side marker lamp/emblem.

Performance body pieces are available as part of the optional Sport Package, including a front chin spoiler and rear spoiler. The 370Z is offered in seven exterior colors: Pearl White, Monterey Blue, Brilliant Silver, Magnetic Black, Solid Red, Platinum Graphite and a launch-year only, premium signature color, Chicane Yellow.

A Driver’s Cockpit Equipped To Make Car and Driver Feel Like One

The interior design of the new 370Z continues the ZÒ tradition of enhancing driving pleasure, no matter what the road or traffic conditions offer. “As an Everyday Sports Car, every aspect of the interior needs to address two needs – support and enhanced driver performance during spirited driving and offer high levels of comfort and utility for normal commuting and around-town activities,” said Castignetti.

The traditional 2-seat layout is built around a deeply scooped instrument panel with a full-length center console separating the driver and passenger’s seat. In the rear is an open cargo area with enhanced storage and accessibility. The design focus incorporates a “layer concept,” with an information layer, an operation layer and a holding layer.

The information layer provides enhanced visibility with easy access to all key data. The gauges are once again attached to the steering column, so the driver doesn’t have to choose between the perfect steering wheel position and visibility of the gauges. The upper steering wheel opening in front of the gauges was also enlarged to provide a better view of the readouts.

Gauge size has been increased over the previous generation design, including a 15 percent increase in the tachometer, and the gauge angle has been adjusted.

The instrument panel retains the traditional 3-pod cluster with oil temperature, voltmeter and clock, while the speedometer and tachometer now include an “initial sweep” function, coming alive when the ZÒ is first started.

The operation layer includes the steering wheel, shifter and switchgear. The steering wheel is an all-new “oval” 3-spoke design, which offers baseball-style stitching, improved thumb grips and palm rest areas for improved feel on long drives. The surface of the leather-wrapped wheel is “shaved” to provide a more kidney-like shape to better fit in the hand. The shifter was also redesigned, with the manual transmission shifter padded in different areas to improve the accuracy of diagonal shifts and to feel softer in the hand for forward and backward motions.

The holding layer includes the seats, knee pads and door trim support. The driver’s seat is uniquely different from the passenger’s seat, with lower seat cushion cut-outs on the sides where the thighs rest – allowing the driver to push on the pedals without the seat fighting them. The seat also features an improved frame that helps it to better hold the driver in place during cornering. It also offers a 0.4-inch lower hip point than the previous ZÒ driver’s seat.

Both the driver and passenger’s seats are structured with an anti-slip material in the main seating surface. The sporty woven cloth seats feature standard 8-way driver’s/4-way passenger manual adjustments, with heated 4-way power-adjustable leather-appointed seats standard with the 370Z Touring model. Adjustable front seat Active Head Restraints are also standard.

The door armrests have been designed to provide extra support when cornering and the kneepads are better integrated to help the driver maintain the proper position while cornering.

In addition, the available aluminum pedal pads utilize a new rubber insert material to improve grip and the accelerator pedal and brake pedal are completely new. The accelerator pedal is now floor-mounted (versus hanging) to provide better contact with the foot, less effort to operate and easier pedal-to-pedal foot/heel movement. The brake pedal is a new variable ratio design with enhanced rigidity and easier operation.

Interior packaging is also enhanced from the previous generation, including the removal of the rear strut brace (replaced with less intrusive structural reinforcements) and by adding a new “shelf” area behind the seats, creating an ideal area for storing briefcases. A retractable cover is standard on the 370Z Touring model. A locking glove compartment has been added.

Standard interior comfort and convenience features include Nissan Intelligent KeyÔ with Push Button Start, power windows with one-touch auto up/down feature, power door locks with auto-lock feature, a center console box with a new non-intrusive cover design, automatic climate control, rear window defroster with timer, two 12-volt power outlets, four cupholders (two in door panels, two in center console), dual overhead map lights and a AM/FM/CD/AUX 4-speaker audio system with illuminated steering wheel-mounted controls.

The 370Z Touring model adds standard 4-way power adjustable heated synthetic suede and leather-appointed sport seats with adjustable lumbar support, 6CD Bose audio system with eight speakers (includes dual subwoofer) and MP3/WMA playback, XM(r) Satellite Radio (XM(r) subscription required, sold separately), Bluetooth(r) Hands-free Phone System, HomeLinkÒ Universal Transceiver and passenger seat map pocket.

An optional Navigation Package includes the touch-screen Nissan Hard Drive Navigation System with XM NavTraffic(r) with Real-Time Traffic information (XM(r) subscription required, sold separately), 9.3GB Music Box Hard Drive and Interface System for iPod(r).

The 370Z interior is available Black cloth or for 370Z Touring models, a choice of Gray, Black or Persimmon leather-appointed seating.

“Of all the tremendous enhancements to the new Z(r) interior, one that is easy to overlook is the enhanced quality – both in fit and finish and in the quality of materials and designs,” said Castignetti. “Z(r) is proving once again that outstanding performance is available at an affordable price and so is outstanding quality.”

Taking Performance To A New Level

Since so many aspects of a sports car’s performance come down to the simple formulation of power-to-weight, the engineering teams behind the development of the new 370Z made that their priority focus. On the weight reduction side of the equation, they put the new Z(r) on an extremely restrictive diet. Beyond just the pounds shed with the body-in-white, every component throughout the vehicle was scrutinized. For example, fuel tank weight was reduced by 13.9 pounds, the exhaust system by 3.8 pounds, the audio system by 3.5 pounds and the 19-inch wheels by approximately seven pounds each for the fronts and six pounds for the rears – an estimated 225 pounds total.

Along with the reduced weight, the center of gravity was lowered through use of a lower engine positioning (-0.6 inches) and lower driver hip point (-0.4 inches). Rotating mass was reduced with a shorter carbon-fiber composite driveshaft. All of these weight savings were needed, of course, to counter the added weight of the Z(r)’s enhanced body structure and new technology and safety features. The net weight reduction is 95 pounds for the 2009 Nissan 370Z over the comparable 350Z Enthusiast model.

On the power side of the targeted class-leading power-to-weight goal, the new Z(r) picks up 26 horsepower utilizing the fourth generation of Nissan’s award-winning VQ-series V6. The new 3.7-liter VQ37VHR engine with VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift) is rated at 332 horsepower @ 7,000 rpm and 270 lb-ft of torque @ 5,200 rpm, compared with the previous 3.5-liter V6’s 306 horsepower @ 6,800 rpm and 268 lb-ft of toque @ 4,800 rpm.

Along with its larger displacement, the new engine gives better power delivery all the way to the 7,500 rpm redline, improved low-end power and more high-end torque, creating an entirely new driving experience. Approximately 35 percent of the engine’s parts are new, versus the previous design.

Key to the enhanced performance is the VVEL system, which is able to optimize intake valve open/close movements, allowing the needed air to be sent promptly to the combustion chamber at the precisely optimized time.

Since the VVEL system can adjust to open the valves slightly, it improves fuel efficiency by reducing camshaft friction and fuel waste. It also provides cleaner emissions by allowing for quicker warm-up of the catalyst and by stabilizing combustion when the engine is cool. The engine also has a new “growl” from the dual exhaust system due to reduced back pressure, enhancing driving enjoyment.

The new engine is backed by a choice of two new advanced transmissions, both designed to improve driver performance. The new close-ratio 6-speed manual includes an available world’s first synchronized downshift rev matching system, which allows drivers of any skill level to experience professional-like gear shift performance. The “SynchroRev Match” function automatically controls and adjusts engine speed when shifting to the exact speed of the next gear position, essentially “blipping” the throttle to smooth out any up/down shifts. This not only allows the driver to focus more on braking and steering, it improves vehicle balance and smoothness by reducing the typical “shock” when the clutch is engaged. The system can be deactivated with a button next to the shifter for drivers who prefer less vehicle intervention. The SynchroRev Match system is offered as part of the optional Sport Package.

“The SynchroRev Match system takes nothing away from the driver – you still have to engage the clutch and move the shifter – it just gives you a performance edge by smoothing out the gear engagement,” said Castignetti.

Overall shift feeling has also been improved, with reduced vibration and noise (accomplished through improved lubrication) and a modification to the lever angle of the short-throw shifter.

The 370Z’s new 7-speed automatic with Downshift Rev Matching (DRM) and Adaptive Shift Control (ASC) is designed to offer quick, manual-like shifting when operated in manual mode with a target time of 0.5 seconds between shifts. Drivers can use the standard paddle shifters or the shift lever. With new torque converter lock-up logic, the new 7-speed automatic feels more direct, like a manual transmission. The new 7-speed’s wide gear ratios offer improved fuel efficiency, while the Adaptive Shift Control is designed to adjust to the driver’s driving style.

“The combination of the new 3.7-liter engine and advanced new transmissions puts the Z(r) solidly at the front of the class in terms of responsive acceleration,” said Castignetti. “Add in the enhanced handling from the revised suspension – which provides better grip, reduced understeer, improved road holding, reduced impact harshness and better ride – and you’ve got a new standard for thrilling performance.”

Estimated fuel economy is 18 mpg City/26mpg Highway for both the 7-speed automatic and 6-speed manual transmissions – increases of 1 mpg City/2 mpg Highway for the automatic and 1 mpg Highway for the manual transmission versus the 2008 350Z.

The previous generation Z(r)’s suspension has also been rethought to reduce weight, improve strength and improve camber change and lateral displacement. The double-wishbone front suspension (replacing the lower multi-link setup in the 350Z) uses lighter forged aluminum arms and a lightweight rigid aluminum-alloy cradle, along with a lighter stabilizer bar with a 35 percent improved lever ratio.

The 4-link rear suspension is also now stiffer and lighter, with the rear cradle entirely integrated into a single part (no welding). All-new “high response” shock absorbers are utilized on each corner, with ride comfort improved through reduced shock friction.

The standard 370Z wheel and tire package features 18×8.0-inch front/18×9.0-inch 5-spoke lightweight aluminum-alloy wheels with P225/50R18 front/P245/45R18 rear Yokohama ADVAN Sport maximum performance summer tires.

Also available as part of the optional Sport Package are 19-inch RAYS forged lightweight aluminum-alloy wheels with Bridgestone Potenza RE050A P245/40R19 front/P275/35R19 tires.

The Z(r)’s already advanced braking system has been upgraded to include improved overall brake feel, better fade resistance and improved NVH. With adoption of the new variable ratio brake pedal, pedal stroke feel is more direct. The standard 4-wheel vented disc brake system includes Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA). The optional Sport Package includes Nissan Sport Brakes with large diameter 14.0-inch front and 13.8-inch rear rotors (versus 12.6-inch front/12.1-inch rear standard rotors) with 4-piston front and 2-piston rear aluminum calipers.

Steering is provided by a vehicle-speed-sensitive power-assisted rack-and-pinion deign that has been reworked (including redesigned mounting bushings and a column insulator) to provide improved response. Unwanted steering kickback and vibrations are reduced with the addition of a solenoid valve that acts like a damper when there is a harsh impact load. The standard Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system has also been revised with new electronic hardware and all-new logic.

The Nissan 370Z’s long list of standard safety features includes the Nissan Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) with dual-stage supplemental front air bags with seat belt and occupant classification sensors; front seat-mounted side impact supplemental air bags; roof-mounted side-impact air bags; seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters, Active Head Restraints, Zone Body Construction with front and rear crumple zones, Nissan Vehicle Immobilizer System, Vehicle Security System and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

A Simplified Model Line-up

The new 2009 370Z’s model line-up has been greatly simplified, versus the 2008 350Z, with just two models – 370Z and the 370Z Touring.

The 370Z Touring adds heated leather-appointed power seats, HomeLink(r) Universal Transceiver, Bluetooth(r) Hands-free Phone System, 8-speaker Bose(r) audio system, XM(r) Satellite Radio (XM(r) subscription, sold separately) cargo cover and aluminum pedals to the long list of standard Z(r) features and equipment.

Two option packages are offered: the Sport Package, with 19-inch RAYS forged wheels and Bridgestone Potenza tires, aerodynamic front and rear spoiler, larger Nissan Sport Brakes, SynchroRev Match (6-speed manual transmission only) and Viscous Limited Slip Differential; and the Navigation Package, with Hard Drive-based Nissan Navigation System, 9.3GB Music Box Hard Drive and Interface System for iPod(r).

“This exciting new Z(r) represents the essence of the Nissan brand, just as the original 240Z did nearly 40 years before,” said Castignetti. “It provides passionate performance at an excellent value – just what was needed then and just what sports car enthusiasts are looking for today.”

Under the gentle dusting of wildfire ash, Nissan’s ad agency, TBWA/Chait/Day along with Edmund’s Insideline unveiled Nissan’s 370Z for the first time in North America. Legions of Z-car die-hards, a few GT-R guys and even a Nissan designer were out in full force.

We were on hand to snap some photos of the new 332-hp 370Z, chat with a Nissan interior designer and, of course, eat some free gorditas. The 370Z arrives on the scene with a new smaller version of the FM chassis, lighter, but more powerful. While not a huge departure on the outside, the new car is clearly smaller, but wears some big mean Potenza RE050’s, sports 26 additional ponies and a few new techno-goodies. We already told you about the world’s first synchronized downshift rev matching system for the 6-speed manual, but an ‘S-Mode’ button to the upper right of the shifter [complete with a little graphic of the double-H shifter gate], and an ‘Active Diff Switch’ in the spare tire hold leave us intrigued.

Though probably the biggest improvement in the new Z is the dynamite interior. More spacious and with more seat travel [to accommodate you lanky folks!]. We spoke to Hase, a Nissan interior designer and he told us about the major work they did to get the interior right. He was very upfront with us and said he knows the criticism the 350Z received for its interior and said his team set about on mission to bring the 370Z up to par with modern sports cars. We’d say they got it right. When asked about the similarities in design inside & out with the Maxima, he added that the interior design team on the Z was separate from that of the Max, but they both share common design themes that portend the new direction at Nissan.

Make sure you check out a video of the event from StreetFire.net. We’ll be getting you more updates and official specs this week at the official LA Auto Show unveiling.
