At the Goodwood Festival of Speed earlier this year, Honda surprised hot-hatch fans with the Honda CR-Z Mugen RR – a supercharged 1.5-liter CR-Z equipped with an IMA hybrid system, pumping out 197-hp and 181 lb-ft of torque. That gave it the ability to go from 0 to 60 mph comes in at approximately 6.6 seconds.

As outstanding it was, Honda kept saying that the CR-Z Mugen RR was just a concept… until now.

Honda of UK confirmed today that it has joined forces with Mugen Euro to launch a hybrid CR-Z called the ‘Honda CR-Z ICF.’

Mugen Euro engineers worked on the 1.5 liter unit giving it a centrifugal forced air induction system, charge-air cooler and induction system and a remapped ECU. That allows the Honda CR-Z ICF to produce a nice 173-hp, which helps it to hit a top speed of 130+ mph and allows it to run o to 62 mph in just 6.1 seconds – that’s over 3 seconds quicker than the standard CR-Z.

“MUGEN Euro magic has created a super responsive yet eco-conscious model building on our sporting credentials and giving us the ability to compete in the “hot hatch” marketplace as we move into 2012,” said Martin Moll, Head of Honda marketing.

Sales will begin in the UK in spring 2012 with prices starting around £24,000 ($37,480 USD).

We here at egmCarTech love the new Honda CR-Z. Though we were a bit surprised by the lack of any decently measureable amount of performance. Sure, we weren’t expecting an all out tire-roasting hatchback as it is built to also be kind to the environment. But we thought it could use some extra power since we think the CR-Z would make a better case for itself as the CR-Z does provide some fun. And boy, did Honda listen.

Honda’s trademark tuning firm Mugen was under close watch as they unveiled their version of the CR-Z hatcback not too long ago. And just recently, they unveiled everything you need to know about Honda’s hottest hybrid yet, which almost sounds counterintuitive.

Awaiting a full reveal at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, Honda and Mugen decided to release the full specification sheets to the Mugen CR-Z at a special press conference.

“We wanted a car that has genuine performance available at the touch of a button, but can perform just like a standard CR-Z and offer good fuel economy when the driver wishes,” said Mugen of Europe’s correspondent, Colin Wittamore. “For that reason, we’ve kept the three driving modes, so the driver can select “eco” or “normal” to switch to economy and low emissions for daily driving, but press the Mugen button for the full-blown weekend-warrior settings.”

With hopes to offer a Civic Type-R-like performance and feel in conjunction with the preexisting eco-friendly demeanor of the normal CR-Z, the Mugen CR-Z will keep the standard CR-Z’s 1.5L four-banger with Honda’s IMA (Integrated Motor Assist). It was also reworked with upgraded and strengthened internal components. On top of that, Mugen equipped their CR-Z with the iCF system, or Integrated Centrifugal Forced-Induction, which was designed specifically for the CR-Z. I think that’s their way of saying that this baby is turbo- or supercharged.

The result is a 50% increase in power and torque, rated at 200-hp and a peak torque of roughly 159 lb-ft of torques. As for some performance figures, a 0-60 time of 6.6 seconds nearly matches that of a Civic Type-R, thanks to some weight reduction as well. Thanks to these upgrades, the Mugen CR-Z can also achieve an average fuel consumption rating of about 42mpg in “Eco” mode and about 29.4 mpg in “Mugen” mode.

The Mugen CR-Z also features a widened track in both the front and rear and is equipped with a five-way adjustable shocks and a limited slip differential. Stoppers are Mugen’s own four-piston calipers with discs all around. The body receives a more aggressive kit with a carbon fiber hood and 17in forged alloys, courtesy of Mugen’s own supply.

On the inside, Recaro seats will be you support with a reworked interior to let you know that you’re by no means in a normal CR-Z. Some of those changes include the addition of water and oil temperature, and oil pressure gauges, a unique gear shifter and some carbon fibre appointments.

Honda’s UK-based performance tuning division Mugen Euro has admitted to wanting to develop a high-performance version of the Jazz/Fit. The brand, which is responsible for the upcoming supercharged CR-Z hybrid said they’ve been yearning to do a hot version of the Fit.

Currently, Mugen offers styling packages for the Jazz in Japan, where the car is known as the Fit. However, performance increases are small.

Mugen Euro’s management says that to achieve a nice performance gain, it could tap into the CR-Z’s supercharged hybrid powerplant – or a normally aspirated 2.0L VTEC unit used in the last Civic Type R.

“Always in the back of our mind as a car that we’d like to do is the Jazz,” said Mugen Euro’s general manager Colin Whittamore.

We recently tested the 2011 Honda CR-Z and were fairly impressed by the hybrid hatchback. However, we kept finding ourselves yearning for more power and more zip for a hatchback that looked as aggressive as the CR-Z.

Well, our thirst is about to be quenched… sort of. Honda’s tuning arm Mugen has officially confirmed that it is working on a one-off supercharged Honda CR-Z Hybrid, which will make it world debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July. Mugen said there are no plans of production yet.

Power for the Mugen Honda CR-Z will come from a 1.5L i-VTEC gasoline engine that will get a supercharger, helping it produce 200-ps (197-hp) with a maximum torque of 181 lb-ft.

“The idea was to use the significant advantage of the early torque provided by the Honda IMA electric motor, then increase the torque available from the petrol engine gradually, to first maintain and then increase this,” says Colin Whittamore from MUGEN Euro. “A supercharger and complementary electronics allow us to very neatly map the IMA to the extra power and torque of the engine in a unique package, giving a smooth, integrated and powerful driving experience.”

Other performance enhancement features include tuning to the chassis dynamics, with 5-step adjustable dampers fitted front and rear, an increase in track width and a large reduction in overall weight. Stopping power will come from larger brake discs and 4-pot monobloc calipers.

Mugen Honda CR-Z Type R

Honda’s in-house tuner MUGEN in Europe and Honda UK are currently developing a heavily tuned version of Honda’s new CR-Z sport hybrid. Being prepared for a world debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, MUGEN Euro claims that the new model will deliver “Type R-like” performance with the potential of delivering better fuel economy.

The CR-Z MUGEN will have its 1.5L four-pot and the Honda IMA system enhanced to boost power and torque. The MUGEN will also feature a reworked suspension and brakes to improve chassis dynamics. Specific details pertaining to the enhancements to the powertrain have yet to be released.

Additionally, MUGEN will be adding some weight-saving materials such as a carbon fiber hood and special allow wheels to reduce unsprung mass. New fascias front and rear along with a new spoiler will help improve aerodynamics and aid in giving the CR-Z a sportier look.

“We wanted to extend the performance of the CR-Z,” says Hiro Toyoda of MUGEN Euro. “It is already a fun car to drive, with an excellent chassis, but we thought that with more power and enhanced torque delivery it could be even more exciting. However, as with all MUGEN projects, we have stayed true to the Honda design and philosophy, and the electric motor is still a vital ingredient to boost performance and economy.”

While the Honda CR-Z was already out to prove that hybrids don’t have to be boring, the company’s tuning arm Mugen thought it could make new hybrid sports coupe just a little more exciting with a couple of cosmetic upgrades.

Added by Honda dealers, buyers will be able to choose from a number of modifications including a new front splitter, daytime running lights, side seals, rear-diffuser, wheels and new rear-wing. Interior enhancement include a Mugen branded gear shifter, additional dials and carbon fiber rear-view mirror.

Sales of the 2011 Honda CR-Z Hybrid will kick off in the U.S. in the second half of 2010.

Just yesterday, the guys over at Temple of VTec posted leaked images from Honda’s CR-Z Hybrid’s JDM brochure. Today, they have released images from Mugen’s brochure showing us our first look at the modified CR-Z Hybrid coupe.

Could tuning packages for hybrid vehicles create a whole new market for third-party and in-houe tuning firms? Apparently so – Mugen said that it could very well build a bespoke tuned version of the upcoming Honda CR-Z hybrid sports car.

Hiroki Toyoda, the firm’s European vice president, told AutoCar that “the hybrid powertrain would create a new set of tuning opportunities, with the electric motor acting as a kind of turbo at low speeds, to compensate for a lack of torque inherent in naturally-aspirated petrol engines.”

Honda has confirmed that it has no plans to add gasoline version of the CR-Z, keeping its new sports car a fuel-efficient option for hatchback lovers.

The Honda CR-Z will go on sale in the United States in the second half of 2010.

Honda’s tuning arm Mugen Motorsports has released the first official images of the company’s modified Honda Civic Type-R hatchback.

Mugen hasn’t released any details about its tuning package for the Type-R Civic but judging by the two pictures, we will see a wide front spoiler, a new grille, hood vents, plus additional vents behind the front wheels. In standard form the 2.0L 4-cylinder VTEC engine produces 200-hp. Mugen is expected to offer some performance tweaks increasing output to 240-hp.

Pricing is expected to come in upwards of £35k when sales start at the end of 2009. We’d love to have it in the states, but that is not likely to happen – ever.

Honda’s new Civic Type-R looks very good but when it comes to performance it hasn’t quite impressed many as its predecessor managed to do. Now, Japanese tuner Mugen is out fix all that by applying the modifications from the Mugen RR to the Civic Type-R three-door hatchback.

Mugen will strip the Type-R of most of its equipment, offer some suspension upgrades, may add upgraded Brembo brakes and lightweight Recaro bucket seats. Power is likely to come from Mugen RR’s 2.0L VTEC engine modified to produce 237-hp – up from 198 along with 160 lb-ft of torque.

Pricing is likely to top £35,000 ($57,575 USD). Of course, U.S. sales are very unlikely.

There isn’t much of Honda’s lineup that tuner Mugen hasn’t made an attempt to make more appealing and aggressive. The latest Honda model to receive Mugen treatment is none other than the 2010 Honda Insight Hybrid.

In order to improve air flow, Mugen has added a front under spoiler, a front sports grille, side spoilers, a rear wing, a rear under spoiler and sports silencers. Mugen is also offering two sets of aluminum wheels ranging from 15 to 16 inches.

Want to cash out some more green? Mugen is offering an Intelligent-Tire Condition Monitoring System and a sports suspension.

Mugen, a well known Honda tuner, has released the details and pictures of its tuning package for the new JDM Honda Accord – which is basically a carbon copy of the stateside 2009 Acura TSX. The new package gives the Honda Accord sedan and wagon a very aggressive appearance that we would love to have on the U.S. TSX.

The front part of the package includes a new front under spoiler, a new Mugen sports grille and a Mugen front aero bumper. Following the new side skirts to the rear is a new rear bumper and a massive Mugen rear wing. Performance wise, Mugen is hooking up the JDM Accord with a new sports exhaust system and a sports suspension.

Mugen is also offering buyers the choice of four different 18 to 19-inch wheels. Of course, no Mugen tuned car is complete without some ‘MUGEN’ emblems.
