When Peter Horbury left his position as director for Ford Americas design, we were really scared to see who would succeed him and what kind of designs he would come up with. Horbury, who we’ve had the privilege of meeting, is responsible for vehicles like the Ford Flex and the new Lincoln MKS.

Well, Horbury has now left his position to become head of design for Volvo, which is up for sale. When Ford announced Horbury’s departure, it said that some guy by the name of Moray Callum would head up Ford Americas design.

What we didn’t realize at the time is that Moray is actually Ian Callum’s brother, who is director of design at Jaguar. Of course that doesn’t automatically make Moray an outstanding designer, but take one look at his resume and you’ll be pretty impressed.

In 2001, Moray was appointed to lead Mazda”s design globally. He is the man responsible for the 2003 Mazda 3, 2005 Mazda MX-5, 2006 Mazda 5, 2007 CX-7 and CX-9, and the 2008 Mazda 6, plus a series of concept vehicles including the Washu, Ibuki, Kabura, and Senku.

Ever since Moray came back to Ford Americas, he has overseen the redesign of the 2010 Ford Taurus, 2010 Mustang, Fusion, and Mercury Milan.

“The mission now is to keep that excitement going,” Callum said, describing his task as more evolutionary than revolutionary. “The challenge is keeping it at the level we’re at and, if anything, taking that up a notch.”
