Mercedes-Benz’s AMG arm is well known for debuting some exciting vehicles at the New York Auto Show. At the 2011 New York Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz took the wraps off of the 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG and this year, according to our sources, the Stuttgart automaker will bring us the SL63 AMG.

Power for the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG will come from a 5.5 liter twin-turbo V8 engine making 540-hp. The engine will be mated to a AMG Speedshift Plus 7-speed Multi-Clutch automatic and will help send power to the rear wheels.

What we’re really waiting for is a brutal Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series.

Refresher: The 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL550 will be available in the United States starting this spring. Power comes from a 4.6 liter V8 engine producing 429-hp with a maximum torque of 516 lb-ft. Mated to a 7-Speed Driver-Adaptive automatic transmission, it will go from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds.

A new tuning kit for the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class has been released by Japanese tuning firm Veilside at the Tokyo Auto Salon dubbed Black Fortune.

As the first of this model Veilside has tuned, the body kit was created drawing heavy inspiration from the 65 AMG Black Series, with exposed carbon fiber accents to tip off the carbon fiber front and rear bumpers, rear spoiler, side skirts, and hood.

The SL Black Fortune kit only will be priced at $39,000, and Veilside is making just 300 units.

Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series

Pagani, the Italian supercar maker, and Mercedes-AMG, said last week that the engine for the upcoming Pagani C9 is not the same engine used in the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series Roadster. The statement comes after Road and Track magazine reported that the V12 engine for the C9 was derived from the V12 in the SL 65 AMG Black Series.

AutoCar also published a report saying that the engine will indeed be used in the C9 and will be upgraded with twin-turbochargers to produce 700-hp and 730 lb-ft of torque.

“The engine of the Pagani C9 is not a derivative of the AMG V12 engine developed for the SL65 Black Series, nor is the AMG V12 engine in the SL65 Black Series derived from the engine AMG is currently developing for the Pagani C9,” Pagani and Mercedes-AMG said in a statement.

The Pagani C9 will replace the Zonda next year.

MKB Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series

Swabian (from Swabia, a historic region in Germany) tuner MKB has released a new tuning packing for the Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series that gives the already powerful sports coupe more than 1,000-hp and a maximum torque of 959 lb-ft.

The package, which is known as the P 1000, includes a revised ECU, new air intakes, bigger turbochargers, improved cooling systems and high performance camshafts. The automatic transmission has also been modified to offer a variety of limited slip differentials.

All those modifications allow the MKB Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series to go from 0-62 mph in 3.6 seconds, 0-124 mph in 8.9 seconds and 0-186 in 21.5 seconds. Top speed has been increased to an eye-watering 230 mph.

The whole engine conversion is priced at €116,800 ($148,960 USD) and takes up to three months to perform.

1,015 PS / 746 kW for the SL 65 Black Series

The highest commitment of MKB’s high performance engineering.

Mercedes tuner MKB offers for the most powerful AMG supercar another 345 horsepower. The standard 670 PS are turned into 1.015 PS by the Swabian engineers of the technology tuning company MKB. The engine’s torque is limited to 1.300 Nm.

Before any lucky owner can turn the key of his SL 65 Black Series with the MKB P 1000 power train the car has to undergo an enormous engine conversion.

The new engine conversion for the most powerful AMG engine demanded the long term experience of the whole engineering team at MKB. The engineer’s basis is well known. Many AMG 65 owners trust MKB performance tuning and so they reach regularly speeds with their luxury coupes and luxury sedans on the Autobahn, speeds at which modern jet fighters had retracted their landing gear already.

The club sports AMG SL 65 Black Series plays a new role in the AMG product range but it must not step out of the classic power performance line at MKB. “Our main goal with the new engine MKB P 1000 isn’t a new one. We simply want to give back the top speed performance to this SL with its high downforce-aerosetting. It should be v-max capable just like our other top speed efficient cars. And for this we need more than 800 engine horsepower,” points out MKB CEO Panagiotis Avramidis. But even 900 hp are not enough when you are holding the technological key for over 1.000 hp.

In fact the idea behind the SL Black Series is a whole new concept at AMG. The new high performance in both longitudinal and lateral acceleration showed a new principle. A principle that reduces the v-max for a better race track experience. But at MKB the typical AMG club sports pilot is well known so one thing is clear to the MKB engineers: Especially the longitudinal acceleration must not stop to soon and the most merciless push out of any corner reduces the lap time most easily.

So the MKB engine modification is in its depths is absolute outstanding compared to any other tuned 12-cylinder AMG engine. If costs are neglect able then one can work on the power plant with a greater creativity – inside and outside. The MKB package for the AMG SL Black Series covers the whole drive train and offers the demanded reliability for high speed trials at Nardo or several hot laps on the Nürburgring in succession.

For the Swabian enterprise MKB and most respected technology tuner for Mercedes and AMG cars the work on high performance power trains is business as usual. Decent exterior design, refinement in the interior but magnificent thrust under the bonnet adjusted brakes and wheels are the MKB key visual in the market.

But this MKB P 1000 marks MKB’s step into the future. Even the name shows it clearly. And in Swabian decency it underrates the performance slightly. The new MKB style is the adaption to the vehicle basis: the Mercedes performance product range will be based upon turbocharged engines in the near future. MKB demonstrates with the MKB P 1000 and its over 1.000 PS output the ultimate technology leadership in that business branch.

The 6.0 litre AMG V12 gets in the MKB P 1000 conversion a completely new engine periphery – this means air intakes, turbo charger systems, cooling systems are the visible means. Inside MKB works as consequent too. Apart from MKB camshafts the power ECU has the important job to control the flowing gases in a way that maximum power output, drivability and sustainability will be combined on a high level. The engine pushes significantly forward from 1.500 rpm onwards. Anything like a turbo lag is unknown. The automatic gearbox is converted too to meet the increased engine torque. Additionally MKB offers MBK LSD rear axles with different ratios to reach different end speeds.

The roll-out was in direct competition

MKB technicians demonstrated their full confidence as they made the first roll out at Hockenheim during the international drag race. In front of 8.000 spectators and an astonished announcer the AMG Black series with its MKB P 1000 won his two shoot outs versus specialized drag racing US muscle cars.

“žTo race the 1⁄4 mile was new to us,” tells Panagiotis Avramidis, “and this car had a final drive good for a theoretical 370 km/h. So the car runs only in the first two gears on the drag strip. And as we told the professional competitors that we must use the normal high street tire pressure for safety reasons we have
been laughed at. But in the end it turned out it was not so bad for us.”

The first presented Version will use the final drive ratio for 370 km/h at 5.700 rpm. The MKB v-max is not measured yet. The testing at Nardo or Papenburg oval course will be held soon.

The car should be fun to drive not only on the motorway so the engine kept its place low above the front axle. The standard room in the engine compartment of the SL and other Mercedes cars were kept in mind when developing the turbo charging banks and the air intake ducts. The original looks of the car – even when the drive train is massively converted – means a lot to the typical MKB customer.

Unchanged at the exterior but with a performance far beyond of most super cars and still with the typical Mercedes comfort to reach any High-speed Event without bruises or a stiff neck. With this sentence one can describe the result after a MKB P 1000 conversion of any AMG SL Black Series best. All in all the MKB P 1000 is spot on with his basis in regards of everyday use but it speeds ahead easily if necessary.

MKB offers this conversion as a custom hand built car in the MKB workshop. There is no production number limit for the engine. After the launch with the AMG SL Black Series all other AMG 65 cars can reach over 1.000 hp at the real wheels. The total cost for the engine tuning is 116.800.- EURO in Germany including 19 % VAT. As this tuning can be only done at MKB and takes a lot of efforts the conversion time will take up to 3 month.

About two weeks ago, we saw something called the Brabus VANISH a one-off Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series that makes 788-hp and goes from 0-62 mph in 3.6 seconds. It was known as the fastest, most exclusive SL 65 AMG Black Series on planet Earth… until now.

Meet the new Brabus Stealth 65. The 6.0L AMG V12 biturbo engine from the Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series has been upgraded to produce a whopping 809-hp with a maximum torque of 1,047 lb-ft. The standard SL 65 AMG Black Series makes 661-hp and a peak torque of 738 lb-ft.

The Brabus Stealth 65 uses the T65 RS tuning kit from the VANISH, but engineers at the tuning firm added a little something extra to give that extra 21-hp.

Of course, the Stealth 65 is owned by some very rich guy in Dubai with a very expensive license plate.

Brabus VANISH (T65 RS for Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series)

If there is any company out there that can make the insanely fast Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series faster than it already is, it’s Brabus. A long-time BRABUS customer decided it was time to bring his SL 65 AMG Black Series into the tuning firm to make the car even more aggressive and while this version, known as the VANISH, is a one-off, all components used are available to other customers (so it’s really not a one-off if you think about it).

The increased performance for the SL 65 AMG Black Series comes from the company’s T65 RS package. Brabus added a ECU modification, two special exhaust manifolds with integrated turbine housings, two turbochargers, four intercoolers under the carbon fiber scoop and a special Brabus stainless-steel high-performance exhaust system.

All the modifications result in an output increase to 788-hp with a maximum torque of 1,047 lb-ft (peak torque is limited to 811 lb-ft). That allows the BRABUS T65 RS to go from 0-62 mph in just 3.6 seconds and to 124 mph in 9.8 seconds. While a top speed of 205 mph is possible, the T65 RS is electronically governed at 198.8 mph.

Producing a total of 661-hp from its 6.0L twin-turbo V12, the Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series is far from anything but one of the most ridiculously fastest cars to come out of Stuttgart. However, if you’re German tuner Brabus, than too much horsepower is never enough.

The tuner has created a one-off modified SL 65 AMG Black Series known as the Vanish, which now produces 789-hp from its 6.0L twin-turbo V12. The extra increase in power comes from larger turbochargers and mating the engine to a quicker gearbox and exhaust.

The model was produced for someone special in Dubai. Oh and of course, everything looks better in matte-black and the Vanish’s exterior offers just that.

Hein Wagner, a South African man who was born blind, set a new land speed record for the blind after hitting 200 mph in a Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series. He held the 200 mph speed for more than a half mile.

Wagner said that hitting 200 mph is a milestone for any drive, regardless of whether they’re sighted or blind. His record will be entered in the Guinness World Records and will replace the previous record of 191 mph set by a blind Belgian man.

In 2005, Wagner became the first South African man to set a world land speed record in a Maserati while traveling at a speed of 167 mph.

Mercedes-Benz unveiled its new 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series in the U.S. at the 2008 LA Auto Show yesterday. We have to say, seeing the SL 65 AMG Black Series in person is a totally different experience then seeing it in press photos.

Only 175 units will make it to the U.S. so you better get your hands on one quick. Pricing starts at a whopping $300,000.

Completing the trio we’ve seen throughout the day, the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series is the last car being shown off today by the AMG Performance Studio. The new SL 65 AMG Black Series was a tough job for the AMG Performance Studio who worked on the new body design with large air inlets, wide mudguards and features such as the extendable spoiler. A large number of components were made from lightweight carbon-fiber knocking off 550 lbs when comparing it to its sibling, the SL 65 AMG.

Even the chassis of the new 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series received a completely new design to work with the rear axle limited slip differential and the 3-level ESP. AMG Performance Studio topped off the SL 65 AMG Black Series with 19 or 20-inch Dunlop sports tires, an AMG high-performance brake system and an all-black interior featuring nappa leather, alcantara and carbon fiber trims.

Other than that we already know that power comes from a 6.0L V12 biturbo engine making 670-hp with a maximum torque of 738 lb-ft. Mated to a SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 5-speed automatic gearbox, the SL 65 AMG Black Series goes from 0 to 62 mph in 3.8 seconds with a top speed of 199 mph. The transmission also allows four different drive programs and a double clutch function.

2009 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series:

We’ve been hearing about AMG going green for a while and now CAR has a couple of new details on the diesel and hybrid future of the high-performance Mercedes-Benz models. According to AMG boss Volker Mornhinweg, AMG is getting ready to produce hybrid and diesel version of its cars that will also use low-weight material in order to keep performance at current levels.

Mornhinweg said that the new 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series, which is 250kg lighter than the SL 63, will be the last high-performance AMG to have such massive power. He said the upcoming Gullwing supercar will be the first new model that will produce a modest 571-hp.

Mornhinweg said that by 2010 AMG will introduce a mild-hybrid that will feature start/stop technology, lightweight components and will reduce fuel-consumption of the 6.2L V8′s by 30 percent. It will borrow a lot of the technology introduced in the new S 400 BlueHYBRID.

As for deisels, Mornhinweg says that AMG won’t do large torquey diesel models. Instead, AMG will lean more towards a smaller and more responsive diesel.

He is hoping that the new path will increase AMG annual sales to 30,000 units.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen anything new on the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series. While we wait for Top Gear to get their hands on one, Mercedes-Benz TV has released this video showing its DTM driver Bernd Schneider testing the new AMG beast.

Mercedes-Benz will be showing the SL 65 AMG Black Series AMG at the Paris Motor Show next month and we’re guessing we’ll get to see it at the 2008 LA Auto Show in Nov. with some pricing details.
