Early next year, Mercedes-Benz will unveil the most extreme Benz they have ever built – the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. Power will come from a 6.2L V8 unit making 563-hp with a maximum torque of 479 lb-ft. That should allow a 0 to 62 mph time of 3.8 seconds with a top speed of 196 mph.

AutoCar now reports that AMG engineers are also working on an advanced plug-in version of the car. The plug-in electric version of the SLS is being planned for limited production in 2015 and will be offered with the same lightweight aluminum body and the signature gullwing as the production model.

Known as the SLS eDrive, the plug-in electric version will use a heavily modified version of the standard SLS”s rear-wheel-drive platform. Power comes from two 133-hp electric-motors on the front and two on the back. Engineers plan on using the space behind the seats, which is usually used by the fuel-tank, to house the battery. The standard rear double wishbones have been retained without modification.

All that will help the SLS eDrive will produce 523-hp with a peak torque of 649 lb-ft. 0 to 62 mph comes in 4 seconds with a top speed above 120 mph.

We’ll bring you more details as we get them.

Yes, as of right now the 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG looks very strange in its prototype form, but we can say without a doubt that Mercedes-Benz has come up with something amazing for the return of the Gullwing.

Under the hood of the SLS AMG will be a 6.3L V8 AMG engine that produces 571-hp with a maximum torque of 479 lb-ft. That will allow the ‘Gullwing’ to go from 0 to 62 mph in 3.8 seconds with a top speed of 196 mph. The engine is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission in a transaxle configuration and sports suspension with aluminum double wishbones. Drivers will have a choice of four different driving modes ranging from comfortable to extremely sporty, as well as a RACESTART function. The ‘Gullwing’ also comes with 3-stage ESP as standard, giving the driver access to the three “ESP ON”, “ESP SPORT” and “ESP OFF” modes at the push of a button.

So when will we see the SLS AMG on the road? Mercedes-Benz says that the SLS AMG ‘Gullwing’ has been in the development and design phase since 2006. It hopes to complete testing by the end 2009. The SLS AMG is scheduled to be launched in spring 2010.

Check out videos of the SLS AMG undergoing testing after the jump.

Tomorrow at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz will be showing the 2010 E-Class Coupe and Sedan. However, the automaker didn’t want to leave out another of its latest creation in all this Geneva coverage. While the car won’t be seen anywhere near Geneva, Mercedes-Benz has dropped some official shots and details of its latest high-performance beast – the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG (formally known as the SLC Gullwing).

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is based on the 300SL and will feature the popular gullwing-style doors. The 3,571 pound SLS AMG isn’t ready to be revealed just yet; however, Mercedes-Benz has provided a couple of shots of the prototype undergoing testing.

The SLS AMG will be smaller than the SLR McLaren and will be powered by 6.2L V8 making a total of 563-hp with a maximum torque of 479 lb-ft. With the help of a “Race Start” launch control, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG will go from 0 to 62 mph in 3.8 seconds with a top speed of 196 mph.

By the looks of it, you would think that Mercedes-Benz would be ready to show the SLC Gullwing by the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. According to AutoExpress, it’ll take a little longer – a whole year longer. Sources say that the Mercedes-Benz Gullwing won’t arrive in showrooms until 2010 after being unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.

The SLC Gullwing will wear an AMG badge and will be distinguished as the brand’s flagship model. Production will run for only two years with a limited 6,000 units annually to keep the cars exclusivity.

Power will come from a 6.3L turbocharged V8 AMG engine producing between 600 to 650 horsepower. Power to the wheels will be transferred via a 7-Tronic automatic gearbox. The 0 to 60 mph run will come in at 3.8 seconds with a top speed more than 200 mph.

Spies recently caught the upcoming Mercedes-Benz SLC Gullwing undergoing some hot-weather testing and from the looks of it, the camoeflage is slowly coming off and we’re slowly seeing hints of the legendary 300 SL. Thank God they got rid of that hideious VIper thing they had going on.

So what’s the update on this upcoming beast from Mercedes? Word on the street is that it will be powered by a 600-hp 6.3L V8 from AMG allowing for a 0 to 60 mph time of 3.8 seconds with a top speed above 200 mph. Rumors suggest that the SLC Gullwing may even hit close to 650-hp.

Pricing is expected to be around 150,000 euros ($215,272 USD).
